Eastern Sports Club (basketball)

The Eastern basketball team (Chinese: 東方籃球隊), is a professional men's basketball team of the Eastern Sports Club.[1] The team also known as Chinese: 東方男籃; lit.: 'Eastern Men's Basketball' and Eastern Long Lions for sponsorship reason. The team competes in the Hong Kong A1 Division[2][3] and the ASEAN Basketball League since 2016.[4]

History

Eastern basketball team is a section of Eastern Sports Club (officially known as Eastern Athletic Association Football Team Limited). In 2015 season the team won Hong Kong A2 Division Championship and promoted to 2016 Hong Kong A1 Division Championship.[2] The team became fully professional in 2016.[2][3] In 2016, the team also participated in ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).

In the same year, the club signed a sponsorship deal with Zhong Naixiong, owner of Nenking Group.[5] Thus the club was also known as Eastern Long Lions. He also became the vice-president (Chinese: 副會長)[nb 1] of the sport club.[5] Zhong also sponsored Foshan Long Lions,[5] another basketball team based in Foshan and Guangzhou in Mainland China. In 2017, there was another short-lived "Long Lions" basketball team from Nanhai, Foshan.[7][8] Both Eastern Long Lions and Nanhai Long Lions participated in 2017–18 ABL season.
