She grew up traveling and singing with them, as well as attending pow wows hosted by the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, of which she is a member.[2] Before The Voice, she moved from her hometown of Hollister, North Carolina to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her husband, Ray Simpson, and considered other careers instead of singing.[3][4] Her parents are Jimille and Mike Mills,[5] and she has two siblings who are eight years younger than her, sister Leah and brother Mikey.[6]
Brooke Simpson met her vocal coach, Andrez Franco, in 2013.
