Production

Following the encouraging response to Bench Talkies – The First Bench (2015), Karthik Subbaraj announced plans of releasing a second anthology of short films soon after the initial project had released.[2] In November 2015, a second production titled Aviyal was revealed to be in the editing stages, though the release of the film was delayed as a result of the 2015 South Indian floods.[3] Subsequently, in January 2016, it was revealed that the anthology of films would include Alphonse Putharen's Eli starring Nivin Pauly, while other actors including Bobby Simha, Arjunan Nandakumar and Amrutha Srinivasan would appear in the film. The first look of the film was released by the team of Karthik Subbaraj's Iraivi in late January, while a theatrical trailer was unveiled in early February.[4]

Critical response

Baradwaj Rangan, writing for The Hindu, praised Aviyal for its "craft and performances".[5]

gollark: But `result` good?!
gollark: If it contains horrible mistakes it's going to be hard to test it, because it works on a week timespan.
gollark: Instead of constantly recalculating uptime % from the raw data, which is unusably slow, it now maintains a rolling countery thing.
gollark: Well, if it's wrong, it won't work properly.
gollark: I hope I haven't made horrible mistakes in my rolling counter thing for onstat!
