Production

In April 2016, director Karthik Subbaraj announced that he would make a film starring Dhanush in the lead role.[5] The gangster film was initially set in New York, and the makers unsuccessfully approached Hollywood actors Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino about playing a key role in the film during late 2016.[6] Subbaraj later lamented that the process of reaching out to the actors was difficult, and that it was often difficult to get past casting agents.[7] However, the film was delayed after the producers, Thenandal Studio Limited, opted to prioritise the making of other big-budget films such as Mersal (2017) and Sangamithra. The production house later ran into financial problems and exited the project.[8]

In February 2018, the project's production was taken up by Y NOT Studios.[9] After the actor and director had finished their other ventures, the film was officially relaunched in August 2019, with the shoot beginning in London during September 2019. James Cosmo was signed on to play a foreign character, while several other cast members including Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Kalaiyarasan and Roman Fiori [10] worked in the London schedule.[11][12][13] By mid-September 2019, twenty days of the film had been shot.

Filming started in September in Faversham, Kent a village in the south-east of England. The crew filmed for about a week before they set off for their next location.

While the album was originally slated to release under the record label YNOT Music, the subsidiary of the production house YNOT Studios, the film's audio rights were acquired by Sony Music in mid-July 2020.[14] The first single track "Rakita Rakita Rakita" was released on 28 July 2020, coinciding with Dhanush's birthday.[15]
