Development
Wrynn's namesake comes from Anduin Lothar, a former King of Stormwind, and his grandfather, King Llane Wrynn.[2][3] As a guest panelist at Blizzcon 2013, Josh Keaton said of the character "[He's] that kid I couldn't target in Stormwind" and "now he's his voice." Sarah Pine of Engadget stated "He describes Anduin as a moral compass in many ways, and how he realizes that, as royalty, Anduin has a lot of education, and a big-picture perspective, that is unique to the game particularly for such a young character. Given his heritage, there's a certain regal bearing to Anduin that needs to come through in the voice." [4]
Appearances
Wrynn first appeared as a ten-year-old boy in World of Warcraft as the Crown Prince of Stormwind. When his father King Varian Wrynn was abducted, he was named King of Stormwind under the regency of Bolvar Fordragon.[5] In the Legion expansion for World of Warcraft, Wrynn permanently assumed the throne after Varian was killed by Gul'Dan on the Broken Shore.[6]
Hearthstone
Wrynn appears as the default player hero for the Priest class in Hearthstone.[7]
Heroes of the Storm
Wrynn is a playable character in Heroes of the Storm as a ranged healer.[8][9]
Reception
Anduin was initially negatively received by players. Many found his peace-motivated character traits contrary to the game's theme of conflict, and he was often derided as one of Warcraft's least popular characters. However, during and after his character arc in Legion, in which he ascends to the throne of Stormwind and claims the role of High King of the Alliance following the death of Varian, fans warmed to his new characterization. This more mature and masculine personality was referred to by many as "Manduin."
