- 13 June – European Parliament election, 1999
October
- 10 October – 1999 Portuguese legislative election: Ruling party PS and the Opposition ones conquer exactly 115 MPs, the first and (as of 2015) only time such a draw happened in the Third Republic. Considering the results, Prime Minister António Guterres (in office since 1995) is eventually appointed for a second term in office.
- 12 October – Portugal is awarded the hosting rights of UEFA Euro 2004.
December
- 19 And 20 December – Portugal peacefully hands over Macau to the People's Republic of China as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, marking the end of the Portuguese Empire.
Arts and entertainment
Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, with Rui Bandeira and the song "Como tudo começou".[1]
