Sacramento State competed in the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC). This was the last year the Hornets played in the NCAC. In 1985, the team moved to the Western Football Conference. The 1984 Hornets were led by seventh-year head coach Bob Mattos. They played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The team finished the season with a record of six wins and five losses (6–5, 5–1 NCAC). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 277–218 for the season.

- The official name of Cal Poly has been California Polytechnic State University since 1947. However, it is more commonly known as either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or just Cal Poly.
- California State University, Chico was known as Chico State College from 1935 to 1971.
- California State University, East Bay was known as California State University, Hayward from 1972 to 2004.
