1966 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship

The 1966 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the third staging of Ireland's hurling knock-out competition for players aged between 18 and 21. Cork won the championship, beating Wexford 9-9 to 5-9 after two replays in the final.

Format

All-Ireland Championship

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The four provincial representatives contest these games. The pairings are Munster v Connacht and Leinster v Ulster. Two teams are eliminated at this stage while two teams advance to the All-Ireland final.

Final: (1 match) The winners of the two semi-finals contest the All-Ireland final.

  • Wexford defeat Laois to win their third Leinster title in succession.
  • Following the first All-Ireland final between Cork and Wexford, referee Donie Nealon had to be escorted from the pitch after dismissing two players, one from each team.
  • The All-Ireland final goes to a replay for the first time ever. It is also the only occasion that a final goes to two replays.
  • Cork's All-Ireland victory comes a month after their All-Ireland success at senior level. Gerald McCarthy was the captain for both teams.
