1940 Football League War Cup Final

The 1940 Football League War Cup Final was contested by West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers. It was played on 8 June 1940 and kicked off at 6.30pm despite fears that London would be bombed by the Luftwaffe.[1] The wartime crowd included wounded members of the BEF recently evacuated from Dunkirk. West Ham won the tie 10; the only goal coming from Sam Small in the 34th minute when he followed up a parried shot from George Foreman.[1][2] [3][4] [5]

Post Match

The trophy was presented to the winning team by A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty.[5]

As the match was played during wartime, no reception was held for the winning team. Some players went to the Boleyn public house on Green Street for a few pints whilst others returned immediately to their service units.[6]

gollark: Wikipedia, source of all knowledge, says that "On 4 July 2012, the discovery of a new particle with a mass between 125 and 127 GeV/c2 was announced; physicists suspected that it was the Higgs boson.[21][22][23] Since then, the particle has been shown to behave, interact, and decay in many of the ways predicted for Higgs particles by the Standard Model, as well as having even parity and zero spin,[6][7] two fundamental attributes of a Higgs boson."
gollark: You can prove that that follows from axioms, yes, I forgot that.
gollark: You can just say that your theory is consistent with current information.
gollark: You can't 100% *prove* anything.
gollark: At least, observations suggest that it is a particle which exists and does things.
