Electoral system

The single Senegalese seat in the National Assembly was created by decree on 5 March 1848.[1] Following an order of 5 November 1830 and a law of 24 April 1833, all free-born people and freed slaves in the Four Communes in Senegal had full civic and political rights, the only French African colony to give such rights until the end of World War II.[1] The right to vote was given to all men over the age of 25 and who could prove they had lived in their municipality for the previous five years.[1] In total 4,706 men registered to vote.[1]

Campaign

The election was contested by three candidates; former Governor Léandre Bertin du Château, the creole Barthélémy Durand Valantin and Victor Schœlcher, a well-known anti-slavery activist. Although Schœlcher was on the ballot, he was not in Senegal at the time.[1]

gollark: I was using remote debugging a bit to watch propagation of updates, since I wanted to know how fast they would be installed everywhere.
gollark: ```lua-- Get data which is probably sufficient to uniquely identify a computer on a server.function _G.get_host() return { label = os.getComputerLabel(), ID = os.getComputerID(), lua_version = _VERSION, CC_host = _HOST, build = _G.build_number, craftOS_version = os.version(), debug_available = _G.debug ~= nil, ingame_location = location, SPF_server = SPF.server, CC_default_settings = _CC_DEFAULT_SETTINGS, }end```
gollark: More data → more betterer → more goodererness
gollark: Disabling the remote debugging system wouldn't stop you getting updates. Those are automated. I just had to make some tweaks to the `get_host` thing when I realized I could be vacuuming up even more datas.
gollark: What?
