During the Nagorno-Karabakh war, the village's Armenian population fled after Azerbaijani troops stormed the settlement on 16 June 1991. In 2001 refugees from the village founded a new settlement they named Nor-Aygestan ("new-Aygestan"), in the Martakert region of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, with 90-95% of its population originating from Aygestan.[1]
There have been allegations of cease fire violations in the village's vicinity.[2]
