Background:

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W170 was a digital camera that was released in April of 2008. The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W170 featured a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a Zeiss branded 5x optical zoom, and a 2.7” LCD display. It also included an optical viewfinder which could be useful when the LCD is difficult to see or when trying to save power.

The camera’s lens offered a wider 28 to 140mm equivalent range and included Sony’s Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera shake at slower shutter speeds. The camera featured ISO sensitivity up to ISO 3,200, a Memory Stick Duo/PRO Duo card slot, and 15MB of built-in memory. Power was provided by a proprietary Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which is rated by CIPA for around 370 shots per charge. The Sony W170 provided high-definition component video output through an optional proprietary cable or cradle.

The Cyber-shot W170 came equipped with Sony's newest face detection technology. It could differentiate between children's and adults' faces and offered "Child priority" and "Adult priority" modes. The camera could detect up to eight faces in a frame, optimize focus, exposure, white balance, and flash for the best possible outcome.

The Cyber-shot W170 was equipped with Sony's latest intelligent scene recognition (iSCN) technology that automatically selected the best scene mode for various shooting scenarios. In advanced iSCN mode, the camera could capture two photos, with the second image taken automatically when the camera detects it may be able to improve upon the initial user-selected settings.  Users are presented with both images to choose from.

The Sony Cybershot W170 was priced at $300. The W-series offered more color options than earlier models such as pink, blue, champagne gold, and red.
