Microsoft Surface Book Troubleshooting

Background

The Surface Book is the first full-featured laptop in the Surface family. With a secondary battery and integrated graphics card, the display portion, known as the "clipboard" is detachable, and can function independently of the keyboard dock. When connected, however, the Surface Book takes advantage of an additional battery and an optional dedicated graphics card for high-performance computing.

In 2017 the Surface Book was replaced with its successor the Surface Book 2. The new version was more powerful, utilizing 8th generation Intel processors, had better battery life, and a 15-inch screen option available as well.

Identification

The Surface Book is a 2-in-1 PC meaning that it has the characteristics of a laptop and a tablet. It's easily identifiable by its unique fulcrum hinge, which expands when open to evenly distribute the clipboard's (display's) weight. Both the clipboard and keyboard components have a machined magnesium housing. This iteration comes in silver only.

The model number, 1703, is present on the bottom of the clipboard, next to the SurfaceConnect port, which is where the charging adapter is plugged in. If you're unable to see the model number on the device itself, take a look at the Find out which Surface model you have, on the Microsoft support page.
