TableTalk

In one of your recent edits, you seem to have removed a large portion of the Table Talk section of the Lacundus Drakulum Game discussion page. Was that an accident, or was it just getting too off topic? --Salasay Δ 14:29, 30 January 2017 (MST)

That was me?! I was trying to find it just now and wondering if you guys deleted it yourselves!! My phone is acting crazy. When I load a page, everything is fine, but the moment I click a link, all the text on the page increases one font size and I wind up clicking all sorts of random stuff I didn't intend to. I'm so sorry. --Kydo (talk) 14:32, 30 January 2017 (MST)
Figured it might be something like that. My phone does the same thing, so I've just stopped using it except for simple replies and reverts that don't require much, if any, precise clicking. --Salasay Δ 14:36, 30 January 2017 (MST)
Problem is, I haven't had the time to access a real computer for three days straight now. As I type, I am pretending to sleep for my night shift while my wife takes a nap beside me. Hopefully I can get everything written down before I actually fall asleep again. I was supposed to be done all those character reviews last night, but my family had me moving furniture all day yesterday and I crashed the moment my head hit the pillow. I don't understand why nobody in my family values a quiet, uneventful day alone. --Kydo (talk) 14:50, 30 January 2017 (MST)
Hey bud, was wondering how you felt about starting up Lacundus Drakulum again? Please hit me up if that is still something you would like to do. Or even if you want to do another DnD play-by-post.--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 05:15, 7 January 2019 (MST)
I was... thinking about it. I remember people acting REALLY fast, and the only reason I was able to keep up was because I could access the website from my work computer at the time. That is no longer the case. I might start a new game in the same setting with some slightly altered table rules to slow things down to a manageable rate. Maybe I'll expand the campaign setting itself first so people have more information to work with when making characters and roleplaying. --Kydo (talk) 22:17, 6 January 2019 (MST)

Discord

Does D&D wiki need but not have a Discord server? I know you're working on community relations, but the Tavern was shutdown some time ago and all the kids these days seem into Discord, so I made a sample D&D Wiki Discord server (with dice roller) last night because I needed something to do before bed. Anyway, it's there if it's needed, or I can shut it down if it's not.--GamerAim (talk) 07:24, 6 February 2017 (MST)

I have never heard of discord and have no idea what it is. I'll check it out next time I'm on my PC. The Tavern was, by my understanding, originally an IRC, and the main reason it was shut down was lack of usage, but in addition it was apparently very hard on the server whenever there were a decent number of people chatting in there. Finally, there was an incident with a bunch of people discussing vandalism of the wiki via The Tavern. In the end, it was determined that a chat site was not in the best interest of the wiki because it distracted from what the wiki was supposed to be all about. However, if we're going to be encouraging gaming through the wiki in the future, an online gaming room might actually be a good idea for people who prefer a live experience. It's certainly something worth looking into- however cautiously. --Kydo (talk) 09:04, 6 February 2017 (MST)
Discord is sort of like IRC, but has integrated voice chat, glyphs, markdown, avatars, etc. It wouldn't be hosted on D&D Wiki, though (although I think you could add a Discord chat widget if GD wanted that). It'd be easy to just make new channels for online games people were running. I think there's also a mobile app for people with the latest Apple and Android devices (which I don't have). I did make separate channels for discussing 5e, 4e, 3.5e and AD&D homebrew, but I left out an off-topic channel specifically to avoid enabling people to discuss things too far unrelated to the site. But it was just an idea, and I only threw together an example to show off how it could look.--GamerAim (talk) 10:18, 6 February 2017 (MST)
BTW, I do have it set up so that only verified users (confirmed wiki users would be added to that group) can do certain things like post links and images and stuff. So I'd have to add you to that group before you could use most of what it has to offer. I did this as a safeguard against certain types of spam.--GamerAim (talk) 10:22, 6 February 2017 (MST)

Hello and how are you doing.

I just want to say hello and how are you doing? Marasmusine (talk) 19:46, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. Pretty good. Life is hard but getting better. My wife is recovering, though she'd rather be fully healed and back to doing cartwheels tomorrow. Im having trouble thinking up new material to keep the facebook page going. Getting caught up in canadian politics debates. Considering going political; nobody really represents working people in Alberta, so maybe it's time we represented ourselves. Everyone's so idealistic and impractical these days. Still trying to keep up with D&D. The various communities are very active. Very disappointed with the current season. Everything seems shoddy and rushed compared to ToD! Saving to get a copy of Yawning Portal. Writing my own dicelsss resource management based RPG whenever I'm in a waiting line. What about You? How's it been? --Kydo (talk) 16:14, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Nothing new about my stress levels (both myself and my son have Asperger syndrome... my poor wife...) Game wise, I've started a Rifts campaign with some friends. I've had the Rifts 11th printing since 1998 and never played, although we had dabbled in Heroes Unlimited. The Palladium books are hilariously unorganized and disordered. Rules are in strange places (want to know what the penalties are for a blind character? You'll find it under the blindness spell of course), or repeated over and over and scattered through the text, distances are a mix of meters, yards and feet. Siembieda sometimes goes off on little editorials in the middle of rules description. That's all part of the charm, it's like an RPG written by a giddy teenager, and underneath all that is a decent, uncomplicated system. We were also able to take two of my player's old Heroes Unlimited characters and put them straight into the first session!
The Doom campaign seems to have ground to a halt :/ Marasmusine (talk) 16:51, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
I noticed! It's such a shame, I was having fun reading that! You're definitely right about Palladium books being completely disorderly. I remember trying to play the Macross game and having to turn to a web compendium of rules in order to make sense of some of the more detailed aspects of combat. (A dogfight involving 3 jet fighters, 2 robots, all the people inside the machines, and clouds of missiles was NOT easy to adjudicate.) It was good though, the guy who ran the site was CRAZY into it and had statted up every single machine, weapon, and person who had ever appeared in a Robotech anime. Too bad he stopped supporting the site. I should have saved the entire website to my hard drive.
I'm trying to promote Ixidor to admin status, but an unplanned absence on my behalf may have killed his interest. I think we should take a page out of other wikis books and try to promote a larger proportion of long-term users with good reputations to sysop. I mean, I know we had a problem because of vacationing in the past, but every wiki suffers from that. It's no reason to shell ourselves in. Raising a kid with aspergers sounds hard. I mean, raising any human seems difficult, but difficulty atop of difficulty must seem unfair at times. We're planning on having one of our own some time next year, and it is slowly dawning on me just how real this is going to be, and how totally unprepared I am. --Kydo (talk) 02:24, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Miss playing in your campaign, will swing by the wiki to see if things have leveled out for you come January. Good luck mate.--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 23:02, 15 December 2017 (MST)
Well... No... It looks like my life is going to get turned completely upside down. In fact, if things happen the way I think they will, I will probably be stepping down from admin in January. On the bright side, once it's all said and done, I guess I'll have plenty of time for hobbies after the fact... --Kydo (talk) 03:28, 18 December 2017 (MST)
Gosh, it does sound like you're having a rough time of things, I can certainly empathise. If there is anything at all I can do for you, or you just wanna hang, please do drop me a line, in any form. You have all my best wishes <3 --SgtLion (talk) 14:55, 18 December 2017 (MST)

Hey, Kydo! I would like to request an illustration if you are willing

I was wondering if you were capable of drawing a character for me. He is a half-elf who is half drow elf. He is a Druid that has a quarterstaff, scimitar that is normally sheathed at his belt, and a dagger. His Druidic focus is a totem necklace. He wears travelers clothes, and leather armor. He also carries a backpack with 5 torches and a herbalism kit

Sure. Any details on facial appearance? Physical maturity? Facial hair? Hair style? What about attitude, what kind of personality do they carry themselves with? --Kydo (talk) 22:14, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Guide to Porting Media Content

I know you're busy these days, but when you see this, could you tell me if we have a help page on making game content based on other media (video games, films, books, etc.)? I think it could be useful, especially when designing classes, but I don't want to write it if we already have one and I just can't find it, as I vaguely recall seeing something about it, and I imagine you'd know better than anyone else.--GamerAim (talk) 14:57, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

There is no actual guide to replicating an existing subject in a specific edition of D&D as far as I know. We do have a policy for applying the {{Copyright Disclaimer}} template to pages which represent copyrighted material though.
It isn't really necessary for legal purposes, because unless the owner company decides to make a copyrighted D&D supplement for their content, they technically don't own the right to this form of the idea. You can only copyright the form an idea takes, not the idea itself, so D&D conversions are easily defensible as fair use. Really, the disclaimer is more important for making the origins of content clear to users who may not be aware of the source material.
Making a guide on how to represent ideas from existing media in game terms would be interesting but, I think, very difficult to write. Like, for example, do you go with a philosophy of internal consistency and design a kryptonian race that is identical to Superman in game terms? Or do you go with a philosophy which allows a kryptonian to be as powerful as Superman at level 20? Is that even balanced in the edition you're designing for? Is that faithful to the source material? Conversions of this sort always fall into a rather ambiguous conflict of design philosophies. That's why we have the {{Design Disclaimer}}, sometimes there are multiple right answers and no compromising solution to a design problem. --Kydo (talk) 06:10, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Scaling homebrew spells

Hi Kydo. I read your question in chat, how to scale new spells, and I have some ideas about that. But you should know I think the D&D magic system has sucked since the very beginning, so you might want to take my opinion about it with a pinch of salt. When my players design spells, I try to scale them loosely into my own system. When attempting stuff from unfamiliar schools of magic without having access to extensive manuals, I increase the difficulty and/or lessen the effectiveness.
If you accept to have 9 spell levels (which could be debatable), and want to classify all your spells in these levels, then 1st level spells should be least powerful, while 9th level should be most powerful, right? I have seen divine 10th level spells in an effort to accommodate the hopeless magic system of D&D.
So how can you determine how powerful a spell is? I scale them by energy levels that are channeled through (or 'by') the caster, inspired by the Kardashev scale.

  • 9th level - These spells would be godlike, like wishes, traveling through time and space and the multiverse at will (as you mentioned wasn't such a big deal before), creating universes, harvesting and using all the energy available that is available in an entire cosmos, .. I admit I am having trouble imagining what an all-powerful being could accomplish.
  • 8th - Manipulating energy of an entire galaxy. Creating and destroying planets and stars, possibly black holes or neutron stars. Faster than light travel.
  • 7th - Harvesting all energy of a solar system, the central star(s), planets, asteroids. There should be means to travel around the solar system fast, using anti-matter, teleport, wormholes, dimension hopping..
  • 6th - Being able to harvest all resources and energy from a planet. Magic should allow to escape the planet's gravity well with space escalators, rocket drives, anti-gravity spells, dark matter or energy. Immortality, making back-ups of consciousnesses and restoring them to new bodies, non-physical entities.
  • 5th - Nuclear power, could output deadly radiation and waste when attempted by wizards that are just dabbling in these Magicks. Improved versions would radiate less, or shield it effectively. Fusion engines maybe, possibly stabilizing small worm holes and moving the opposing portals around, superconductivity, .. Bionics, clones, regeneration, cyborgs, nanotech, advanced AI.
  • 4th - Escaping the gravity well of one's own planet. Silicone based machines and emerging creatures. Laser. Advanced medicine. Advanced firearms, railguns, rockets, torpedoes, explosive devices. Plastics, meta-materials and entirely new substances.
  • 3rd - Harvesting energy from a wide variety of sources, and applying them through inventive technology or spells. Earth (earth quakes, earth rays and nodes), water (water turbines, waves), fire (forges, steam), wind (windmills), lightning (electricity), light (solar panels), chemical (batteries, plants), and so on.. Chemistry. Medicine is on the rise. Cannons, early firearms.
  • 2nd - Mechanical power (windmills, treadmills, bicycles, catapults, trebuchets, gears and levers, elasticity, screws, nails, glue or lubricant), steel, healing, alchemy.
  • 1st - fire, bow and arrow, slings, atlatl, early stages smithing of different metals. Basic knowledge of herbs, poultices, first potions. Weaving, tool crafting, maps, boats. First aid.

It's ridiculous that in AD&D a death spell is only available at 8th level. For instance, if a 0th level rock is smashed on a skull, or a 1st level spear-like weapon is stabbed between the skull and spinal column, it also results in instant death. What I mean is that all levels of technology could result in serious harm to an enemy when not countered with spells / technology from the same level. For example, knights wore armor to protect them from swords. So protective spells should be scaled according to which level of magic they are countering, although this needs to be examined for individual cases.
Again, this is just a loose sketch. You'll probably think some of these abilities should be available sooner, or some later. But it's a start to have at least a general idea where to start. Please do not hesitate to give me feedback about any of this. It would be nice to discuss this with someone.
<fnord></fnord> (talk) 04:02, 28 June 2017 (MDT)

Ha, that's smart, making spell level equivalent to T-levels! I hadn't thought of magic-technology transparency like that before, and now that I see it, it makes a lot of sense! I wish the devs were as insightful when they wrote the PHB!
I have to agree, spellcasting in D&D has always been nonsense. That's why casters have always been overpowered compared to mundies; there's no actual rules to spell design, it's all arbitrary. You can have the most well-designed system and the most carefully balanced classes, but if you have a completely arbitrary system bolted to the side of your game, balance will never mean diddly-doo.
Personally, this is why I've always preferred spellcraft systems (like what you see in the earlier elder scrolls games, or the power creation rules for Hero system) over magic static systems. Have a rule system that allows you to design spells methodically that balances spell cost against mechanical benefit. It just works better, even if there are a few exploits, because at least it makes some kind of sense!
Anyways, I appreciate the advice! Thank you! --Kydo (talk) 03:33, 28 June 2017 (MDT)
I'd be happy to expand on this, if you like. Different schools or domains could be held against this scale and reclassified. Each spell level could have it's own webpage by its own right. Magic could also be interpreted differently, not in terms of energy management, but it severity how much it bends the rules of reality, making things happen that are just not possible. I have no idea how to scale any of that. <fnord></fnord> (talk) 04:06, 28 June 2017 (MDT)

Backgrounds

My group wants to ask for these backgrounds to be made: Airship crewman, Artillerist, Conspiracy Theorist, Gunslinger, and Sheriff. --209.97.85.48 13:37, 19 August 2017 (MDT)

Cool. They should each make an account, read the background design guide, and share their ideas! I'm sure they have a better idea of what they want those titles to mean than I ever will! I'm certainly willing to help you guys figure it out though. --Kydo (talk) 10:07, 20 August 2017 (MDT)

Siege Weapon

My group wants a Gatling Gun and a Master Gunner Background. On the background, I told them just to use the Soldier Background. I like the concept of the Gatling Gun but it also scares me. Has anyone tried to post a version of it on this site? --Redrum 14:04, 19 August 2017 (MDT)

Not to my knowledge. That's absurdly specific. What kind of meaningful role-playing feature could be gleaned from being trained with a specific type of gun, that can't already be covered by an existing background? I'd just add it to the list of specializations for the soldier. --Kydo (talk) 10:02, 20 August 2017 (MDT)

Grey Crystal Ring

Is it possible to do a ring as an arcane Focus? --209.97.85.48 13:11, 21 October 2017 (MDT)

Technically, no. Arcane foci aren't just any old objects, they are things made specifically for the purpose of being an arcane focus. They are specially designed, but otherwise mundane objects on their own. If you stick to core-rules content exclusively, then the only extant arcane foci are the examples listed in the PHB. That said, the PHB does seem to imply they are examples, and there is no explanation for why any type of mage (or otherwise properly trained artisan) would not or could not design any given object to be a spellcasting focus... but there is also no guidance on how to price them for homebrew. So, really, it depends on what your DM thinks an arcane focus "is" in their setting. A key point of concern for the anal-retentive players is the matter of hands as a resource for power output. --Kydo (talk) 22:24, 24 October 2017 (MDT)

Arcane Thieves' Tools

The one thing I NEED to know is if it is possible to channel magical energy into a tool to increase Proficiency Bonuses. --209.97.85.48 14:05, 4 November 2017 (MDT)

Not by core, no. I'd just houserule that any object can be silvered as a silver weapon (500gp), and that silvered objects effectively function as foci. It is the easiest shortcut I can think of to satisfy the "what the heck is a spellcasting focus anyways?" question: They are objects with inlaid silver that allows magical use. The pattern determines if it is druidic, arcane, etc. But, then again, I also tend to dramatically increase the prices of goods, and reduce player income as well. --Kydo (talk) 04:48, 13 November 2017 (MST)

Welcome back Kydo! It's great to hear that your real life has become kind to you. Yes, most everyone is still here (except a few users like Jwguy who wanted to take over the FB page). I don't know what could be going on with this social media page, and that's why it is removed from the left bar. Most everyone who is still here has a lot of strong opinions about everyone else now, which is probably not good, but the internet is what it is. Are you going to return to this? It has {{WIP}} but is untouched for over 3 years. Red Leg Leo (talk) 11:07, 27 February 2020 (MST)

No, sadly, I will not be returning to any incomplete page I left behind. I thought I had marked them all as abandoned. I see I missed some things. --Kydo (talk) 17:06, 7 March 2020 (MST)
Sorry to hear that but I do understand. I'll mark them in the future unless you mentioned something. Hope things are well. Red Leg Leo (talk) 10:17, 9 March 2020 (MDT)

gollark: So it would have to create an entirely new version of the page on every box toggling, and also map your click to the original position in the source.
gollark: Instead of an event log or something.
