- Welcome!
Hello Jwguy, and welcome to D&D Wiki. I hope you have been enjoying this site, and I hope you have been finding the information here on D&D Wiki useful. I am an admin (and, actually, the owner as well) here on D&D Wiki along with a couple other people who make up "The Face" of D&D Wiki. Everything relating to admins can be found here.
- Questions
If you have any question about D&D Wiki, D&D, formatting on D&D Wiki, what day today is, or whatever, an admin will, many times, give a good answer. Please feel free to ask any admin any question (ask me a question!).
- Formatting
Formatting on D&D Wiki (or any wiki for that matter) can be very difficult, and if you need help a good place to start is Help:Editing on Wikipedia (or even their Introduction page). This will explain the basic wiki formatting and should provide quite a few useful links that explain more specific areas of wiki formatting. Again, if you have any questions about formatting on D&D Wiki please ask them as, I imagine, anybody will be more than happy to help you get them answered.
- Community
A strong and welcoming community exists on D&D Wiki, and I am sure you will find it rather nice. Most discussions take place on content talk pages, however please feel free to walk into The Tavern (our local chat room) and talk to some fellow D&D Wikians. Anyway, on D&D Wiki, possibly since discussions are never deleted, people try to be nice. This means please follow Wikipedia's guidelines on Civility and Etiquette when discussing anything. Also, on a pretty different note, to ensure people know who posted what, please sign your name after a post with four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the signature icon.
Tirr Areas Infobox
Hey, so I noticed you were open to suggestions for ways to make your campaign setting pages a little prettier. I took that as a challenge. I've stolen borrowed taken inspiration from some other infoboxes I've seen. If you want to stop by here and tell me what you like/dislike on the associated talk page, I can finish it up so that your campaign setting will be prettier. --Badger 01:20, 27 June 2011 (MDT)
Favor to ask
JW, I would appreciate it if you could help me out with some proofreading/balancing. I created a few items, and have them listed on my User Page. Would you be able to take a look and address any issues you might see? Thanks much. -- Irykyl 08:43, 28 March 2012 (MDT)
- I'll get around to giving them a look and rating, sure. Jwguy 13:52, 28 March 2012 (MDT)
- Just a few things I noticed as I went through the first few, though I've only fully checked the Helmet of Zen. There is no authorship of pages, therefore the "Created By: Irykyl" should be removed from the pages. Second, items like the Full-plate of Zen Disciple sound like they should be artifacts, and I've edited the helmet of zen to reflect this. For auras, the aura is usually of a school of magic, such as abjuration or conjuration, though rarely it can be a type or subtype, such as good, lawful, etc..
- The Full plate is an artifact. I was wanting the individual pieces to be wonderous items. It can be worn as a solo piece. Thanks for looking!-- Irykyl 02:32, 29 March 2012 (MDT)
- I gathered that, but considering that they were supposedly forged by gods, and the power of some of the abilities they give the wearer, it just seems that such a classification might be a little odd. I thought Minor Artifacts would suit them, with the Full Plate being a Major Artifact. Jwguy 06:41, 29 March 2012 (MDT)
- That makes sense. How's the balance overall?-- Irykyl 15:50, 30 March 2012 (MDT)
- I looked over most of the artifacts. As long as a DM plays them like artifacts should be (Rare and powerful, not bought out of the local pawnshop), they should be fine. What kind of thing were you going for? I noticed a lot of Wisdom Bonuses. Jwguy 01:57, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
Please don't
Not to be a prick but... (<--- If you have to start a sentence with these words? Don't.) Because you'll probably just end up sounding like one. Duh. Now, to emphasize and illustrate: I wrote that notation on the Talk Page of the Black Lion Lead to express my displeasure with GD's 'editorial' of the class back in October. The very uninformed description, that it gloriously was. After all, I thought it was a personal attack on my work in general and completely unprofessional. But as GD has so thankfully written, it was eventually corrected. No harm, no foul. Done is done. ...And just as he and I were working things out... You show up to 'express your IMHO'. ...Well super. How thoughtful of you. Isn't that just wonderful. Aren't you just cute. Moral of the Story: Don't be a Prick, Prick. --Jay Freedman 00:25, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
- The page and that section showed up in the recent changes as a recent edit. I had trouble understanding your accusation that it was offensive, since the only definition I know for Mendacious did not seem to apply in that capacity, and so my comment was questioning in that line of thought. The Not to be a prick beginning was my recognition that questioning the use of and accusation of using the word might be seen as offensive, as it appeared you were already agitated and I know Green Dragon sometimes has difficulties communicating, so I wanted to clear that up before I mentioned my feeling on the matter. In summary, my comment was regarding that I didn't see how it was such a big deal, as opposed to a small mistake. It was irrational to go that crazy over it, and I didn't understand the use of Mendacious. If you weren't hair-trigger flipping, this would have been a "Yeah, we got that." bit and you wouldn't have posted a possible violation of the rules on my user-page. Stuff.
- Now that the subject of that comment is out of the way, I'll attend to this one: Get over yourself. You're getting all worked up on the internet over something really trivial, especially if it was such water under the bridge, as you say. I've found out firsthand, and you should have, that this is a public place, and being hyper-sensitive over what is yours is only going to cause you to perform irrational actions and possibly lower your credibility in the eyes of the community; Like you're doing now.
- If you wanna' rage because all you can see are attacks coming from all sides, I'd like you take this opportunity to ask you to please do that somewhere else. If you decline, then whatever, I'm really not concerned. Your moral-supremacy, my-way-or-the-highway post on my user-page just confirms that in all your lecturing, you're not much of a saint either, even if your assumptions were true.
- This is a wiki. Everything here is public. Learn to be calm, work with others, and understand that you can't really hurt anyone but yourself over the internet, no matter how hard you try to flex your internet tough-guy muscles, or how clever and witty you think your comments are, and that's beside all the sunken ideology.
- I made the same mistake as you, a couple weeks ago. I got all angry at Green Dragon, thinking that he was just being a jerk or something, and messing up my pages. I'm not really sure what I think about him, but as it turned out, he had a decent reason for what he did, and I just didn't know any better, and thought my work was under attack. I saw what happened here, and I felt like adding in my two cents, even with a disclaimer, that you seemed to misconstrue entirely. Here's hoping you can work out your problems, like I did, and that you can follow your own advice. Peace~ Jwguy 01:55, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
- Jay, please consider this a first warning regarding civility ( - although I'm not going to censor the text). Marasmusine 02:08, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
- Well well. Your pretty smart after all kiddo. I meet alot of people on the internet and not all of them are bright people. Mostly trolls and morons who need a step or two to be kept in their place. After your little '2 cents' post, on an already resolved issued, I figured you for a troll too. But you kept your head pretty well I see. ...Long-winded? But good. Needless to say: Well done. However, don't push your luck. Handing out advice and opinions during a dispute is never a 'bright idea'. "Pearls before swine?" So the saying goes. Heh. Keep up the good work. We won't talk again. Warning noted. --Jay Freedman 02:14, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
- And we all lived happily ever after. Cool story, Bro. Jwguy 02:33, 16 April 2012 (MDT)
Locking Pages
If you want your Tirr pages locked let me know and I can lock them. Just give me a list here, or direct me to the relevant campaign setting category and I can lock them for you. Which level of protection do you desire? Also please make sure that the pages are in the final state you desire if I am to lock them all the way to the administrator level. --Green Dragon (talk) 02:19, 25 February 2014 (MST)
- I appreciate the gesture, and I might take you up on that in the future. As it stands, I'm still kind of letting the campaign take shape. Every now and then, I decide to go back and change some stuff around; I've been running a campaign these last two years with this campaign, and while fun, it has served as a great testing ground for some of these concepts present in the campaign, so every now and then I have to revise the pages. I also want to get most of my pages into the "_____, Tirr" format before they're locked down, as well, so that I'm not taking up any namespaces that anyone else might want to use for a more general game, rather than the ones tailored for my own campaign. Thanks for the offer, though. If I manage to get all of this done, I'll definitely accept it, then. Jwguy (talk) 16:34, 25 February 2014 (MST)
- Okay. Do you want Template:TirrComplete removed from the pages, or should those ones be locked? I am asking because this template was what prompted me to start this discussion. --Green Dragon (talk) 04:28, 26 February 2014 (MST)
- Well, pardon me for my lack of knowledge on Wikis, as far as administration goes, but is it possible to lock those pages so that only I can edit them? While they are rather complete, I do sometimes return to make edits for lore, and sometimes minor additions are fine. The template there is mainly just to keep random edits from overpowering them or changing them too drastically. It basically was just meant to signify that the idea behind the pages was pretty much complete and integral to the campaign, which I feel is necessary since Tirr is a slightly higher power-level campaign than usual, which can lead one to believe that some aspects are overpowered or rather different compared to others. Jwguy (talk) 06:17, 26 February 2014 (MST)
Adminship
I feel that you have been contributing some very worthwhile, constructive, and high quality edits. As such I am wondering if you would like me to nominate you for adminship on D&D Wiki. --Green Dragon (talk) 05:59, 24 March 2014 (MDT)
- I'd be happy to help out, as always, though I'll leave the decision to nominate for yourself to decide. In a way, it's somewhat cheerily ironic, though; I've been the admin of D&D Wiki's facebook page for a few years now, even since I last saw Hooper around. Jwguy (talk) 15:36, 24 March 2014 (MDT)
- Great! I have nominated you (not for April Fools though!) Requests for Adminship/Jwguy. --Green Dragon (talk) 07:55, 1 April 2014 (MDT)
- Welcome to Adminship. You are now part of "The Face" of D&D Wiki. You have more burden on yourself now that you are an admin because users will be looking at you for editing help, knowledge about pages, etc. Make sure to familiarize yourself with Meta Pages to help address this burden. I recommend you take a look at Special:ListGroupRights if you have not already. Some of the new feature's uses follow. You can now delete pages, protect pages, rollback edits, block users and IP's, edit every page, patrol edits, and do a couple more minor things.
- Deleting pages is normally done through Category:Candidates for Deletion. Anything with a good reason to be deleted on that page should be deleted. Other times pages should be deleted is in the case of vandalism, spam, or even when someone makes a page and after a few edits they either blank the page or replace it with something like "Please delete this". If this page consisted of close to just the preload it is fine to just delete it.
- Protecting pages has quite a few different times when it should be used. Pages should be protected according to the author's wishes (with Template:Locked Page added to the top of the page in question), in case of conflict (with Template:Temp Locked Page added to the top of the page in question), in case of OGC published materials (with Template:OGL Top added to the top of the page in question and Template:OGL Bottom added to the bottom), or finally if the page is a vital part of D&D Wiki's organization. Also, if it deals with D&D Wiki's organization the page needs to be protected. For Example 3.5e Homebrew is protected from all non-sysop edits whereas a different page like LA 0 Races is only protected from IP edits. No template needs to be added to pages if they are part of D&D Wiki's organization (even though some do exist like Template:Admin Locked Page)
- Blocking a user or IP should be used with respect to policy. To block someone just click "block" (found on Recent Changes, the diff in question, the userpage, etc) and fill out the corresponding form. For a typical vandalism attack I normally block the user for two weeks. Certain things demand a longer block and others a shorter. No standards have been set for block lengths so use your best judgment.
- Editing every page on D&D Wiki mostly means you can now edit the SRD and the MSRD. Feel free to edit them if inaccuracies are found. If interested further please look at the SRD ToDO List or the MSRD tasks; I am sure your help will be appreciated.
- Now that you are an admin I would say more burden is placed on you, but I really hope you enjoy being an admin and I hope you decide to stay around on D&D Wiki for a while more to come. Welcome to Adminship. Again, you're now part of "The Face" of D&D Wiki. --Green Dragon (talk) 04:21, 9 April 2014 (MDT)
- "even since I last saw Hooper around." Hey, I still lurk. Occasionally. At random. Been an ENworld ENnie Awards judge for two years, and running for public office. So I don't remember what free wiki time is anymore. Good to know you're still here. Hooper talk contribs email 22:44, 24 August 2014 (MDT)

Requesting a page not be edited?
I'd like to know how one can have this done, there's a page I recently made I'd like to avoid having edited. I've seen it else where but I don't know if that's something that the public regularly gets, just curious thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SleekJackal (talk • contribs) 19:37, 20 February 2015. - Hello, and sorry for the late reply.
- Normally, most pages go without protection, as rolling back edits is easy enough. I usually prefer to put a small banner at the top requesting no more edits, or that all edits go through the talk page. If there is a page you've created and it is fairly integral to your campaign or you need to protect it at all costs, we can lock those pages, but this has the effect of keeping you from editing them, yourself, I believe. D&D Mazagine
Hi Jwguy, I seem to have got the ball rolling with the long-discussed D&D Magazine. What I could do with is a commissioning editor for 3.5e material (I think I can handle 4e and 5e), would you consider it? The role is to scour the wiki for 3.5e material that matches the theme of the issue, and vetting it for balance (touching it up to publishable quality if necessary) Marasmusine (talk) 05:36, 8 March 2015 (MDT)
- Hello, Marasmusine. Always a pleasure to chat with possibly the hardest working member of the team.
- As per your offer, I don't mind helping out, although I wonder if I'm truly the best suited for it. While I do primarily work in 3.5e and I do often mess around with balancing, most of my actions tend to center around my own campaign setting. If you think I can help, I'm honored, although I'll have to find some way of keeping track of what we need for each issue, as I have spells where I visit infrequently. Jwguy (talk) 01:17, 9 March 2015 (MDT)
- For the prototype issue, I'll be posting general requests at D&D Wiki Magazine/Issue 0, and the "in progress" PDF on onedrive. On page 4 I've included two 3.5e magic items, if you would be kind enough to check them for balance/completeness. See if you can find me two more fire-themed magic items to include :) Thanks, Marasmusine (talk) 02:11, 9 March 2015 (MDT)
- Neat. Yeah, I looked over the items you have listed (Although they appear to be on page 9, rather than 4) and I can't say anything bad about them. As for some additional fire-themed items, how about Gloves of Fire Control (3.5e Equipment) originally by ZeroTakenaka and Necklace of the Ash Rat by Calidore Chase? Jwguy (talk) 17:35, 12 March 2015 (MDT)
- Thanks! Could you also look at the two monsters at Talk:D&D Wiki Magazine/Issue 0#3.5e Bestiary? (In particular a sanity-check on the golem's special qualities). Marasmusine (talk) 01:44, 13 March 2015 (MDT)

Image
Hi Jwguy, I deleted File:Thri-Kreen2.jpg since the image is under wotc copyright. You uploaded it again but provided a link to a different image in the edit comment (richten on deviantart), can you check this, thanks. Marasmusine (talk) 11:53, 4 September 2015 (MDT)
Sorry, I missed your comment on the talk page. Perhaps upload the image to a different file name. Marasmusine (talk) 11:56, 4 September 2015 (MDT)
- Yeah, will do. I was waiting to see if the image would update, or at least until you or someone else was able to delete it. For some reason, I don't have that ability, myself. Jwguy (talk) 11:57, 4 September 2015 (MDT)
- Ha, it's updated now, that was wierd. Marasmusine (talk) 01:30, 5 September 2015 (MDT)
Deities & Portfolios
I am unaware as to wheater or not this has been brought to your attention or not, but while editing one of my deities I noticed that the portfolios only appear to have the letter h when you preview the page. This is on every deity that I have seen so far, even for the new deities I create. Additionally, two of my deities, Aea and Aknurak, don't appear in the greater deity listing at all. Is this because of the edits I made to the deity template? If so, I would like to express how sorry I am for editing it. I wasn't trying to mess it up. If that is not the case, then could could you please asist me in correcting whatever error that might be causing this problem? Thank you for you time.
Sincerely, Shadow Priest (talk) 21:52, 6 January 2016 (MST)
- In this case, it wasn't you, but another edit. I've corrected it. No worries. =)
- As for your two deities not showing up, it is because the template that pulls deities for the 3.5e Greater Deities page specifically disallows pages with NPC categories. The following is a list of the categories pulled, and pages not pulled, from the DPL template on the page:
- |category=3.5e
- |category=User
- |category=Deity
- |category=Greater Deity
- |notcategory=!
- |notcategory=Pantheon
- |notcategory=Salient Ability
- |notcategory=NPC
- |notcategory=Uncategorized
- Basically, if the page has categories from the "category=" parameters, then it gets pulled, but if it has a category from the "notcategory=", it gets ignored. The notcategory parameters, in this case, have priority.

<Insert some sort of hilarious binary bot-talk joke/pun introduction here>.
Yo Jay-dubya! (how do you say your name, anyway?). I've been trying to raise my own botchild, and she ain't playin' - never mind editin' articles, I can barely get her to walk 'n talk! I know JwBot is the coolest, but I kinda figured I'd learn how to do this stuff, and it's very much outwitting me. As I love Python I've been messing with PyWikiBot in my vain attempts to get anywhere beyond logging in, but I really can't get her to interface well and fear I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. Facebook page
As part of construction on the community portal, I have created D&D Wiki on Facebook primarily as a tool for us to keep track of who has access to it, who else we are working with, and files we have used in the process of running that page. It can also be used as a behind-the-scenes place to discuss future activities through the Facebook page, such as if we ever decide to run an event for the wiki. --Kydo (talk) 19:27, 23 September 2016 (MDT)
- hi there! I’ve recently requested access to help admin the D&D Wiki Facebook page but so far I’ve come up short on getting help with this. Are you able to assist in the matter? I’ve also posted on the Talk:D&D Wiki on Social Media#Facebook Page Article if you’d like to see what Kydo and Hooper have said. Thanks for your time. Resignation
Perhaps it comes to no surprise, as heated as people were and as many commented on their own potential resignations or leaving the community altogether, but I think it was bound to come to this. Honestly, it had been coming for some time.
I'm formally announcing my intention to resign as an administrator.
I should mention that my decision to do, or at least heavily considered doing this was made at the beginning of the the tumultuous events of GamerAim's RfA, not the end of it, although I'd be lying to say that I hadn't been further influenced as time went on. It was the moment I opened the page, and saw the first few posts by other administrators and their reasoning, and little more. There was every possibility and likelihood that if GamerAim's RfA failed, that this post was going to be made, even so. In a way, if SgtLion's relevant post was to be believed, it could have very well have been three of us leaving, in that possibility. I think I even mentioned the topic, albeit in so many words, in a few of my arguments. Even beyond the recent RfA by several months, I had grown concerned by what was happening to our community. I did what I could to defend our editors at large, to ensure they had options, resources, and opportunity against what I saw as an ever tightening grip. After so many arguments, even my own edit count began to dwindle, not that I've ever placed stock in such things.
I came into the discussion about the RfA because I was alerted to it, although I had noticed it the day before, by SgtLion, for transparency's sake. I had not been involved in any of that mess until that point, and every one of my arguments were built upon only what could be proven therein, and the subject's own arguments on the matter. I can, and will continue to, proudly declare my lack of partiality in the matter, and I truly believe that my arguments are, and were, correct. I stand by them, even now.
I do have my own thoughts and contentions on the ruling, but it is Green Dragon's decision to make. We should all hope that it leads to good things.
I should also mention that while I feel strongly about what I do, I would least of all hold grudges over arguments on a wiki. So, I still consider my friends here in utmost esteem, even if the fires of our arguments were rather intense. I've been the underdog more than once, and I'm certain we all have. I value this and other communities greatly, and I've watched more than once as tyrants arrived and left their mark on those communities, sometimes damaging them irreversibly. And despite this, I've seen plenty of times when the administrative bloc has defended itself, investigated itself, and determined that it had committed no wrongdoing, all the while those communities continued to be harmed. Justice, and defending the community in these situations, have become more important to me than you can imagine.
It's an old story, and it's not unique to me, but it is also mine, and my explanation.
But, it's because I feel strongly about all of these things that I have to do this: I do not believe I am compatible with this site's administration, any longer; The priorities, in my mind, are too different... and I cannot be part of something that I cannot defend in good spirit.
I do not consider myself to be a special asset to this site, nor do I think me leaving is some great blow, so I do not believe it is cause for alarm. I do not believe it would be ethical to use such a thing as a cudgel, anyways, nor do I think I could do so effectively, if I had the mind to.
That's just how it is. So long, and thanks for all the good times. --Jwguy (talk) 12:39, 16 October 2018 (MDT)
- Though we did end up disagreeing, I do appreciate the effort you put into trying to give detailed justifications in your input, and you often make valuable contributions site-wide. It's a real shame that things have gone this way and a shame to hear you no longer feel compatible. I do hope we'll get to see you around in the future; hopefully with more fun and collaborative results for all. --SgtLion (talk) 12:53, 16 October 2018 (MDT)
- Hey man, I'm real sorry I had anything to do with this. I know you said you were thinking to resign anyway, but still, I'm sorry for any part I played in your decision. Especially since of all people I interacted with on the RfA, things between us seemed amicable with no hard feelings. I'm sorry I misread that, and sorry again if I offended you personally. You were one of the most objective, reasonable people there, and I never meant you any ill will.
- I'm also bummed because, even though we were on "different sides of the fence" as it were, a lot of what you said resonated with me, and I like to think that we could've been on the same side if we'd had much chance to interact outside the RfA. Even now, I see myself in your words, and that makes seeing you leave all the sadder :( I hope you change your mind and stay, and come to realize that we're on the same side of more issues than we're opposing on, but I do genuinely wish you well regardless. It is admins like you, SgtLion, Green Dragon and Marasmusine that I have always looked up to. Know you'll always have my vote.--GamerAim

- The direction of the wiki is interesting to say the least, and only time will tell where it goes. I never got the chance to collaborate with you on articles but I think it would have been helpful to do so. Maybe you return and help the site be what you'd like it to become, or perhaps it will be what you think is the right idea. Cheers! BigShotFancyMan (talk) 13:29, 16 October 2018 (MDT)
- Even though we never really interacted, I'll still be sad to see you go. If you decide to return, I'll gladly support your RfA :) — Geodude

- So, I've read my share of resignation notices, but not one like this. I don't mean you any wrongdoing, and I found you to be a very amicable administrator and an outstanding user, but what is an "intention to resign" announcement? I'll read this as a resignation announcement and demote you. Hope to see you around! --Green Dragon (talk) 23:28, 16 October 2018 (MDT)
