Yin Yang Yo!
"In a world of chaos and disarray
Brother and sister save the day!"
"When might and magic work as one
A villain's plan can be undone!"
Yin Yang Yo is an Animated Series which aired in Toon Disney's Jetix block (later Disney XD). It retains the same creative team behind The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, so naturally there are quite a few similarities.
Yin and Yang are twin rabbits. Yin, the studious and socially aware girl, is constantly mortified and embarrassed by her dirty, disheveled, violent, greedy and self-indulgent (but still miraculously on the side of good) brother, Yang. Together, they study the ancient art of Woo Foo under the tutelage of grumpy old panda Master Yo, who once had his own Woo Foo glory days.
Yin's studies are Woo Foo magic; Yang's are Woo Foo combat, hence the "might and magic" standard above. They both are eager to prove themselves, partly because they want to master what they've learned, but also because the Big Bad has rendered it so the entire world thinks Woo Foo is stupid and laughable. The problem is that, as twins and polar opposites, they get on each other's nerves and get in each other's way often. But when they do finally set aside their differences and actually work together, they prove formidable.
Feel free to contribute to the Character Sheet
- Action Girl: Yin, Lina towards the end of Season 2
- Aerith and Bob: There's normal names like Dave, Linda and Rodger. There are fictional names, like Yin, Yang and Coop. And there are names like Ultimoose and The Boogeyman.
- Affectionate Parody: Or Shout-Out -- you decide.
- All Girls Like Ponies: Or Twonicorns, as the case may be.
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Yin seems to fall instantly for anyone she knows, if they become tainted with evil. Even Coop the chicken. Especially Coop the chicken. It is very plot-relevant in "Gone-a-Fowl."
- Ambiguously Gay: Carl, The Evil Cockroach Wizard. mainly because of his accent
- He once used a giant robot in the shape of a giant pink stiletto-heeled stripper-boot. He's been seen being fitted for a dress by his mother (Who the dress wouldn't fit, of course, as she's a dragon. Don't ask), with no sign that it was unwilling. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Carl's accent is the straightest thing ABOUT the character.
- Kinda leads to Carl's mother not liking him into rather uncomfortable overtones, doesn't it?
- Animation Bump: The animation does seem to get better in the second season. The movements are less..."bouncy".
- Animal Battle Aura: A Woo Foo Aura, which is in the shape of the animal that makes it.
- Artifact of Doom: Ironically, most of the power items are in Yo's Woo Foo Armory. But the villains get their hands on it, and Hilarity Ensues.
- Art Shift: There is one in "Upstanding Yuck" during Yuck's flashback. It is drawn to look like a children's picture colored with crayons.
- Badass Grandpa: Master Yo
- Bad Future: The premise of "Deja Foo", Yang creates a future where Ultimoose becomes the new Night Master when he found the Amnesulet but he managed to hit the Reset Button on it. When Yang use this as a advantage to start deliberatingly hurt others in attempt to get revenge, it's even worse when he forgot about the Amnesulet and got Yin and Master Yo killed by Ultimoose in the process! Yang managed to prevent the future from happening by being nice and stopped Ultimoose, with the help of the villains who Yang was nice to!
- Balloon Belly: Happens to Yin in "How the Cookies Crumble".
- Battle Cry: quite a few
- Yang: "Chee, Hoo, Wha!"
- Ultimoose: "HOOH! HAH! HOOH!"
- Beta Baddie: Several, including Carl, The Evil Cockroach Wizard and an action figure brought to life who now has a vendetta against Yang.
- BFS: Smoke has a pretty big sword.
- Big Bad: The Night Master in Season 1. Eradicus in Season 2.
- Boobs of Steel: Smoke
- Book Dumb: Yang
- Brick Joke: This series runs on these, but the biggest one comes from ULTIMOOSE! In "The Trouble with Twonicorns", he says he wants to pick up chicks, with his horns showing a baby chicken. The last episode of the series has ULTIMOOSE honestly attracting Coop's Mom.
- Brother Chuck: After "Welcome to the dark tomorrow", Molecu Larz vanished without any explaination.
- Brother-Sister Team: The titular bunnies.
- Butt Monkey: Dave. Ironically, his ability to ask other plants and trees for help makes him one of the most powerful (good) characters.
- On the villains' side, we have Carl and Ultimoose
- Catch Phrase
- Yang: "Hippity hoppity hard", "That's right!", "Pellets!" and "Two words. 'Who' 'Cares'?"
- Lina: "Talk to the hand!"
- Calling Your Attacks: "Yincinerate! Yangarang! Transfoomate!" et. al.
- Card-Carrying Villain: "Carl, The Evil Cockroach Wizard!"
- Chained Heat: Happens to Yang and Carl in "Get Off My Back".
- Color Coded for Your Convenience
- Comically Missing the Point: In "Upstanding Yuck", Yin and Yang find their photo in the newspaper to see they've become criminals to their town. When Yin asks Yang if he know what this means he replies: "If we turn each other in, we're set for life!"
- Couch Gag: After the title is a random line from the episode, often one that sounds horribly wrong out of context.
- Cute Bruiser: Being pink and blue bunnies, both twins qualify.
- Dark Action Girl: Saranoia, Smoke, Ella Mental
- Deadpan Snarker: Lina, Ella Mental and G.P.(Fr-ped), specially toward Saranoia the latter.
- Deflector Shields: Foo Field
- Department of Redundancy Department: "Power doesn't make you evil. Being evil makes you evil"
- Different As Night and Day: Yin and Yang
- Doomy Dooms of Doom
- Dragons Up the Yin-Yang: No pun intended.
- Drop What You Are Doing: Yo, on the occasion of realizing his students are about to let Sealed Evil in a Can out.
- Dumb Muscle: Indesructo-Bob
- Emphasis on dumb.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Both Carl and Herman love Edna, and try to impress her through evil deeds.
- Evil Laugh: Most of the villains have one.
- Evil Redhead: Smoke, Ella Mental
- Evil Sorcerer: Carl The Evil Cockroach Wizard
- Eviler Than Thou: Played for laughs between Carl and his brother Herman.
- Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: Saranoia is a sorceress with wands that transform her, binding her to their will. Examples include a wand that transformed her into a little girl and a maid in fishnets.
- Fountain of Youth: Master Yo
- Four-Fingered Hands: used but subverted with the Manotaur who has Five
- Getting Crap Past the Censors: Various, starting with Yang yelling "Pellets!" whenever he's annoyed.
- The sheer amount of time they use the word "sucks" (as in "This sucks!!") is mind-boggling, especially for family friendly Disney.
- Every single scene of "Fighting Fooberty" is sufficient to make anyone over the age of 12 slightly green in the face. Just watch; you won't regret it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BPMhDmPstY
- A scene in "Basic Yinstinct" has Yang get away with calling Yin flat chested.
- In "Yin Yang Yuck!", Yuck comes out of the bathroom laughing about how hard it is to get "blood and car parts off your knuckles".
- In "Camp Magic Pants", there is a giant gold statue of pants in the camp and winning a game allows you to touch it. Yang comments, "Is it alright if I touch it in the ankle area?" Yin also later says, "...Down in the ankle area so there's nothing creepy about it."
- Granola Girl: Yin
- Green Lantern Ring: Yin's magical abilities
- Groin Attack: In 'Gone-A-Fowl', Boopy Von Ha-Ha Pants kicks Master Yo in the head multiple times, then in the crotch.
- Gross Up Close-Up: When Carl turns the twins ugly.
- Gross-Out Show: Played for laughs between Yang's bad habits and Yo's old person hygiene. Yuck in general.
- Harmless Villain: Up and down in regards to Carl, the Evil Cockroach Wizard.
- Heart Symbol: Yang leaves them behind him [where a cartoon character would ordinarily leave a puff of smoke] as a wake when he realizes his crush likes him back.
- Heel Face Revolving Door: Yuck was beaten up by a group to become good and then became evil again when he got beaten up by Yin and Yang one too many only to realize that he was good all along.
- In the episode "Crawling with the Enemy", a disguised Carl teams up with Yin and Yang to take down one of Eradicus' corporations. At the end of the episode, moved by how good Yin and Yang treated him, he removed his disguise, says that he doesn't want to be evil anymore and be friends with them. He's kicked out.
- Her Codename Was Mary Sue: Yang wrote some stories when he was younger, and is mortified when Yin discovers them.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Seth MacFarlane as the Manotaur.
- Sued for Superheroics
- Hot Mom: Coop's mother
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Yang even Lampshades it.
Yang: Our enemies usually end up defeating themselves.
- Hypocritical Heartwarming: Yin says (on multiple occations) that she's the only one who gets to laugh at Yang.
- Hypocritical Humor
- I Am Big Boned: Master Yo.
- If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten: In order to get access to the Night Master's lair and get the title, you must commit very evil acts. Yin would have become the Night Mistress if she kills her brother Yang.
- Incest Subtext: Some moments between Yin and Yang invoke this trope.
- "I don't have to listen to you, you're not hot anymore."
- Invisibility: well, Yinvisibility and Yangvisibility.
- Jerkass - Master Yo and Yang, at varying levels. Sometimes Lina and Yin. Yuck is always called this.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold - Master Yo and Yang, again.
- The Jimmy Hart Version:
- Yang and Carl are stuck together and an ersatz version of the theme to "The Odd Couple" plays.
- There's a chase scene wherein the music is a near-miss of "Yakety Sax".
- Joker Jury
- Ki Attacks
- Kidanova: Yang
- Lampshade Hanging: Quite a lot.
- Large Ham: Eradicus, particularly when giving cliche villianous dialogue.
- Yang on occassion.
- All the recurring villains are large hams.
- Last-Minute Hookup: Yin and Coop
- Last of His Kind: Master Yo is quite fond of telling anyone who will listen that he is the last panda on the planet. Before training Yin and Yang, he was also the last Woo Foo warrior.
- Loads and Loads of Characters
- Luke, I Am Your Father: Yo is Yin and Yang's father
- Let's Get Dangerous: Carl, when he was wiping the floor with Night Master's Elite Mooks in the season one finale.
- Medium Awareness
- Mismatched Eyes: Fastidious
- My Name Is Not Durwood: Saranoia does this to Yang every time she (Saranoia) appears on the show, the nickname Mark
- No Celebrities Were Harmed: Nancy O. Delffa (and voiced by none other than Nancy O'Dell herself)
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: Carl in season one finale even though he was helping good guys
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Yang is smarter than he pretends to be, but he does this in order to be able to get away with things.
- Official Couple: Yang and Lina, Yin and Coop
- Parental Abandonment: Yin and Yang's rabbit parents have not made an appearance so far, so Yo the panda is their only parental figure.
- Yo is somehow their father, but forced to forget by Chai and Ti when they were born. The identity of their mother is still a mystery, though.
- Parental Bonus
- Parental Favoritism: Saranoia's Freudian Excuse
- Edna doesn't bother to hide that she prefers Herman over Carl.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Yin and Yang
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Yin, Yang, Lina and every member of the Woo Foo army, composed entirely by (insanely strong) kids.
- Makes sense, for some of them, considering:
- Dave's parents are also treants, possibly with the same abilities.
- Boogie Man's father also looks to be the same kind of fighter.
- Roger Jr.'s father (And probably mother) are Punch clock villans.
- Coop's Mother is the strongest of all....a hottie with Public Relations power.
- Carl and Herman count as well, seeing as Carl is a powerful wizard and Herman is an ant with Super Strength.
- Makes sense, for some of them, considering:
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up: An enemy does this to Yin and Yang.
- Positive Discrimination
- Power Glows: Yang's sword glows when it's especially powerful.
- Mystic woo foo is shown as blue glow.
- Power Trio: Master Yo, Yin and Yang, as well as the Chung Pao Kitties.
- Pungeon Master: Rubber Chucky.
- Quirky Miniboss Squad: Eradicus' mook squad: Ella Mental, Rubber Chucky and Destructa-Bob.
- Molecu Larz disappeared after their introduction.
- Right Behind Me
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Eradicus, until Yang, in a misguided attempt to become famous, sets him free, ushering in the Dark Tomorrow.
- Shadow Discretion Shot: Coop's first transformation into Evil!Coop has one.
- Sibling Rivalry Carl and Herman
- Sibling Yin-Yang
- Split Screen
- Stalker with a Crush: Coop the chicken has the dig on for Yin, and Yang has the dig on for Yin's friend Lena.
- Stealth Pun: At an all-bear formal party, Yang asks where the bathroom is. A bear politely indicates the woods. Yang looks confused for a moment, then smacks his forehead and says, "Duh, of course."
- Straw Feminist: Saranoia
- Super-Powered Evil Side: Coop
- Sword and Sorcerer: Yang and Yin, respectively.
- Talking to Himself: Yang and Yuck are both voiced by Scott Mccord
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Yin's eyelashes and
hairearpin. - Theme Tune Rap
- Thick Line Animation
- Title Drop: Yin, Yang, and Yo say it as a battle cry in the Season 1 finale.
- Took a Level in Badass: Dave when he discovers his powers to manipulate plants and Lina when she uses Might Woo-foo and was second-in-command of the Woo-foo army.
- Tsundere: Lina she even lampshades this to Yang in Gone-A-Fowl.
- Twin Telepathy: Yin and Yang occasionally hit the same thought at the same time and/or finish each other's sentences when they're separated and in danger.
- Yang has used it to find Yin on occasion. Though not entirely under his own control.
- The Unfavorite: Saranoia's rants indicate she was one of these growing up.
- Carl fits this trope even better than Saranoia, with his mother constantly praising his brother over him.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Used as a Running Gag on "Shadowcluck".
- Weaksauce Weakness Carl is incredibly competent and dangerous when it comes to being a wizard, but enraging him makes him act like a six year old with a temper tantrum. This is shown in the season 1 finale, where Carl for once isn't fighting enemies who snark at him, allowing him to focus and take out hordes of opponents.
- Herman's allergic reaction to panda fur. To be fair, there is exactly one panda left, but still.
- Wonder Twin Powers: The Woo Foo Aura results in a giant energy form made up of Yin and Yang working together so their Battle Aura combines into a half-pink, half-blue Battle Bunny.
- Turned up a notch when Master Yo is also involved in it. His aura is green. Not surprising when you think about it... (Okay so Yin's is pink. That's light red, close enough for cartoons!)
