Ark Autobot crew

Optimus Prime (Convoy (コンボイ konboi))

Function: Commander
Alt. Mode: White Freightliner WFT-8664T Cabover Semi-Trailer Truck

"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings."

Hi-Q (ハイ・Q hai kyū)

Alt. Mode: Power Engine

Optimus Prime is the largest, strongest and wisest of all Autobots. Feels his role is the protection of all life, including Earth-life. Fights unceasingly to defeat the Decepticons. Splits into three autonomous modules: 1) Optimus Prime... the brain center known as the Commander; 2) Roller, the Autobot scout car... a spy who operates up to 1200 miles away; and 3) Autobot Headquarters... the combat deck equipped with a versatile mechanic/artillery robot. Injury to one module is felt by the other two.

Powermaster Optimus Prime is the beloved leader of all Autobots. Dedicated to protecting all life forms -- mechanical, human, and otherwise. Willing to sacrifice anything in order to end the Autobot/Decepticon conflict. Wise and compassionate... the inspiration that fuels every Autobot. Binary bonded to the super intelligent Nebulan computer programmer, Hi-Q. In engine mode, Hi-Q handles all of Prime's power needs. Trailer transforms into armed fortress, complete with laser rifle, concussion blaster, and 2 twin particle beam cannons. Tractor and trailer combined construct Optimus Prime's new super-powered robot form.

  • A Father to His Men
  • An Axe to Grind
  • Badass
  • Beware the Nice Ones
  • Big Good: It's like the Autobots shut down without him.
  • BFG: His Ion blaster.
  • The Captain
  • Catch Phrase: "Autobots, transform and roll out!"
  • Deadpan Snarker: More than you'd expect.
  • Death Is Cheap: Is it ever!
  • Fan Nickname: Robo Jesus.
  • Gentle Giant
  • Hammerspace: His trailer.
  • The Hero
  • Honor Before Reason: Many, but the most extreme example is when Optimus allowed himself to be killed over a videogame. Needless to say, Optimus got better.
  • Humongous Mecha: Optimus is quite big to begin with, but Super Optimus Prime at least 50% bigger. He's still smaller than the likes of Omega Supreme or Metroplex, though.
  • Hurting Hero: There is an ever present yet dignified sadness in Peter Cullen's performance of Optimus, as if The Great War has affected him so deeply, that he is always crying deep inside. Cullen stated in interviews that he drew inspiration from his brother, a Shell-Shocked Veteran of the Vietnam War, who told him before the audition for Optimus "Don't be a tough hero; you are strong enough to be gentle."
  • Iconic Characters: Easily the most recognized character in the history of the franchise.
  • Ideal Hero
  • Idiot Ball: Optimus grabs it hard in the episode Heavy Metal War. Megatron challenges Prime to an honorable duel where the loser would be exiled into deep space. Of course, Megatron cheats by absorbing all the special abilities of his fellow Decepticons, even though if he was found out the duel would be invalidated. Prime even comments to himself how strong Megatron actually is during the duel, but not once does he even consider the fact that Megatron might be cheating. It takes someone else finding evidence of what Megatron did and spelling it out to Prime for him to finally get it.
  • Large and In Charge: At first, Prime was the largest of the Autobots. The arrival of combiners and other larger Transformers caused this to be subverted, though.
  • Martyr Without a Cause
  • My Greatest Failure: When the Ark was boarded by the Decepticons, Optimus crashed the ship onto Earth in an attempt to kill the Decepticons on board. Not only did it fail, it ended up bringing the war to Earth, putting humanity in danger.
  • Nice Guy
  • One-Man Army: One of the few Autobots who can fight Megatron on even terms.
  • Papa Wolf: Not as much as later versions, but he is all about this in "Prime Target".
  • Parental Substitute: A meta-example; to many children in the 1980's he is the strong yet loving and kind father that should have been there for them. Which is why his death in the movie was so hard hitting back then.
  • Super Mode: Powermaster Optimus can now combine with his trailer to make "Super Optimus Prime."
  • Transformation Trinket: Hi-Q for Powermaster Prime.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Whole-heartedly believes that the universe can be a kinder and gentler place, in spite of all the pain, horror and sadness that he has witnessed in his long life.
  • Worthy Opponent: His rivalry with Megatron transcends petty hate into a deep respect and understanding: So much so that whenever they fight side by side for a common goal, they are unstoppable.

Bluestreak (Streak (ストリーク sutorīku))

Function: Gunner
Alt. Mode: Datsun 280ZX Turbo

"I never met a Decepticon I didn't dislike."

Bluestreak often talks incessantly and inanely. Lightens the situation for all Autobots with his good-natured manner. Despite formidable weaponry and blazing speed, he hates war. Haunted by memory of Decepticons destroying his home-city. Fires bombs up to 8.3 miles and lightning-like 80,000 volt beam up to 12 miles of limited accuracy. Often inhibited by his disdain for combat.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: In Transformers: The Movie, several Autobots are working at the foot of Lookout Mountain and are trapped there as the Battle of Autobot City begins. Bluestreak included. The film depicts a couple of them surviving. While one of them (Huffer) is confirmed deceased at a later episode. Bluestreak, however, is never mentioned or depicted after this point of the film. His fate never determined.
  • Doomed Hometown: Praxus.
  • Friendly Sniper
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: In the animated show, Bluestreak is depicted as a sharpshooter. In "The Ultimate Doom, Part 2", Laserbeak is flying away with a captured Spike Witwicky. Bluestreak fires at the flying bird, successfuly wounding its leg without harming the hostage. In "Enter the Nightbird", the Autobots are trying to capture Nightbird, a robotic Ninja without harming her. Bluestreak manages to shoot her sword out of her hands. Without leaving a scratch on her body. In a |Transformers comic book story called "Man of Iron", Bluestreak manages to take down Thundercracker in mid-flight. With a single shot.
  • Motor Mouth
    • Stepford Smiler: The reason he talks so much is to keep himself sane, so it oftentimes comes off as this.
  • Palette Swap: of Prowl.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He has a score to settle with the Decepticons.

Brawn (Gong (ゴング gongu))

Function: Demolitions
Alt. Mode: Suzuki Jimny SJ20

"Might over microchips."

To Brawn, Earth is essentially a hostile environment - and he loves it. Strong, rugged, agile - the most macho of all Autobots. Delights in challenges. Sorry for those not as tough as himself. Second strongest Autobot - can list 190,000 pounds and knock down a small building with one punch. High resistance to artillery fire. Vulnerable to attack by electromagnetic waves.

  • Fastball Special: Optimus Prime and Brawn use this technique in "A Plague of Insecticons".
  • The Napoleon
  • Nigh Invulnerability: The episode "Fire on the Mountain" features a A Day in the Limelight for Brawn. He is starring in most of its combat scenes, gives trouble to several high-profile Decepticons and even manages to wrestle control of Megatron's personal fusion cannon. Using it against Megatron himself. In the process Brawn shrugs off direct hits in several parts of his body, including his head.
    • Subverted in Transformers: The Movie. He is supposedly one of several killed Autobots. While the deceased are typically shown taking massive damage, Brawn's death scene only depicts him taking a shoulder wound. Fans have long doubted if this was enough to kill him.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He may be small compared to the other Autobots, but Brawn sure packs a mean wallop, and can easily take on opponents twice his size or more with sheer strength.
  • The Worf Effect: In Transformers Generation 2, Megatron receives a series of upgrades and has more destructive abilities than before. He demonstrates said abilities by easily destroying the nigh-invulnerable Brawn.

Bumblebee (Bumble (バンブル bamburu))/Goldbug (Goldback (ゴールドバック gōrudobakku))

Function: Espionage (Bumblebee), Espionage Director (Goldbug)
Alt. Modes: Volkswagen Beetle, Futuristic Human Soldier (Pretender Shell)

Bumblebee: "The least likely can be the most dangerous."
Goldbug" "To know others you must know yourself first."

Small, eager, and brave, Bumblebee acts as messenger and spy. Due to his small size, he dares to go where others can't and won't. He idolizes the bigger Autobots, especially Optimus Prime and Prowl, and strives to be accepted. He is the most energy efficient and has the best vision of all the Autobots. He can go underwater for reconnaissance and salvage missions. Although physically the weakest Autobot, his stealth more than compensates for this inadequacy.

Goldbug has the mind of the Autobot Bumblebee, but new, improved body. More serious, assertive, mature than he was. Realizes what others think of him isn't nearly as important as what he thinks of himself. Excellent fuel efficiency; 2 1/2 times better than the next best Throttlebot. Adaptable to underwater, cold and hot environments. Can withstand temperatures from -150 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bumblebee is a free-wheeling, fun-loving Autobot. Recommissioned as a Pretender, this formerly tiny titan is now bigger and better than before. Outer shell equipped with titanium armor, sonic blaster, and turbo-thrusted rocket pack. Reinforced helmet equipped with multi-band radio transmitter and thermal tracking meters. Inner robot armed with laser pistol. Car mode also equipped with X-ray lasers in headlights that can burn through solid rock. Entire frame, chassis and outer armor refortified for added endurance and fighting power on the battlefield.

  • Friend to All Children: Always the guy working with the kids.
  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: In a case of "How many Bumblebees are there?" The episode "Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5" features concurrent battles between Autobots and Decepticons taking place in Cybertron and Earth. Bumblebee is depicted taking part in both of them, being in two places at once. Later (a) Bumblebee is reconstructed as Goldbug. But in "The Rebirth, Part 3", Bumblebee and Goldbug are depicted together, standing next to each other in the epilogue.
  • Kid Appeal Character: Former Trope Namer (The Bumblebee)
  • Nice Guy
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3" the Autobots are trying to lure the Decepticons into a trap. Creating a fake rocket base as a target to their opponents. Bumblebee disguises himself as a human scientist. By simply wearing a lab coat over his regular humanoid form.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: In most continuities, he gets injured and must be repaired into a more adult-like form, Goldbug. In the comics, he gets injured again and gets reverted to his Bumblebee form but gains a Pretender shell.
  • Sixth Ranger: Goldbug, to the Throttlebots.

Cliffjumper (Cliff (クリフ kurifu))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Porsche 924 Turbo

"Strike first, strike fast, strike hard."

"Let me at 'em," is Cliffjumper's motto. His eagerness and daring have no equal. He's driven by a desire to win the battle against the Decepticons. Finds Earth terrain a hindrance. One of the fastest Autobots. Often uses his speed to draw fire away from others. Shoots 'glass gas' which makes metal as brittle as glass. His recklessness often leads to actual blow-outs and situations too dangerous for him to handle.

  • BFG: Cliffjumper is tiny by Transformers' standards. But pulls out a huge rifle cannon in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1".
  • Blood Knight:
  • Conspiracy Theorist: In the episode "Traitor", Cliffjumper becomes convinced that Mirage is working for the Decepticons. He spends the episode interpreting any random event according to this theory. Comic book interpretations of the character generally depict him as paranoid, seeing traitors all around him.
  • Hammerspace: His character description includes "He makes a habit of pulling ridiculously huge guns out of nowhere".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Established as part of his characterization in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1", the first episode of the animated series. Cliffjumper and Hound are send on a scouting mission. When the two locate the main forces of the Decepticons, Cliffjumper takes a shot at Megatron. Resulting in two Autobots facing a small army of Decepticons.
  • Palette Swap: Of Bumblebee, a deep red.
    • He wasn't such at first, but since both characters had little horns and similar transformations, later versions of Cliffjumper became Palette Swaps of the corresponding Bumblebee.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy

Gears (ギアーズ giāzu)

Function: Transport, Reconnaissance
Alt. Mode: 4WD Off-Road Pickup Truck

"Nobody wins a war - somebody loses."

Gears is anti-social, a self-proclaimed misfit. Finds fault in everything and everyone. Acts this way to help cheer others up as they try to cheer him up. Tremendous strength and endurances. Totes heavy loads long distances. Launches to height of 20 miles, floats down on compressed air. Becomes an easy target due to limited maneuverability. Can detect infrared.

  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Extreme Doormat: In the episode "Changing Gears", the Decepticons capture Gears and remove one of his circuits to use in a new device. The removal of said circuit causes a change in personality. Leaving Gears to be cheerful, overly polite, and willing to assist/obey anyone in his immediate vicinity. Making him the perfect servant. Though his flowery speech still includes various insults to Megatron. "How can I help you, Megatron, heh heh, you rotten hunk of scrap?"
  • Grumpy Bear: Right, Transformers aren't a Sugar Bowl, but Gears is still this when compared to the other Autobots.
    • Beneath the Mask: Gears is actually putting on an act to lighten the mood. It does get to him sometimes.
  • Sensor Character: "More than Meets the Eye, Part 2" reveals that Gears has in-built infrared sensors. Allowing him to trace the heat traces of Ravage, a stealthy infiltrator.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back: Partially averted in "Changing Gears". As Optimus Prime prepares to restore Gears to his original, annoying personality, Trailbreaker interrupts him with: "Uhh, just a minute, we took a vote and...uhh, well we decided we like Gears the way he is now."

Hauler (Roadhauler (ロードホーラー rōdohōrā))

Hauler
Function: Transport/Resource Exploration
Alt. Mode: Mitsubishi Fuso Hook-Crane Truck

A Constructicon-type working for the Autobots. Transforms into a crane. Only appeared in a single episode, "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1". He is seen with Cliffjumper, recovering a wounded Hound; he was never seen again. However a toy version of him was created in 2003 and detailed origin stories followed.

  • Adaptation Dye Job: He was orange in his cartoon appearance but his toy and appearances in other media make him green. This has lead further evidence that the character in the cartoon was supposed to be Grapple but was simply given the wrong (or a prototype) name.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Despite his all too brief appearance, his similarity to both Grapple and the Constructicons led to various theories before the character got an official origin. Which confirmed him as a rogue member of the Constructicons.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: A single episode and no spoken lines.

Hound (ハウンド haundo)

Function: Scout
Alt. Mode: Jeep J59

"Observe everything, remember even more."

Hound loves the natural wonders of Earth, prefers it to Cybertron. Brave, fearless, loyal. Secretly desires to be human. Uses turret gun as radar scope, infrared radiation collector. Tracks machines as well as humans. Hologram gun projects 3-dimensional grid laser-light topographical maps. Vulnerable to thermal and electromagnetic interference.

Huffer (Drag (ドラッグ doraggu))

Function: Construction Engineer
Alt. Mode: Single-Axle Semi Truck

"Molecular structure is the key to success."

Huffer is cynical, hard-boiled, and pessimistic. "He looks at the world through sludge-colored wind-shields." Will complain it can't be built, then builds it anyway. Not too sociable, but absolutely reliable. Arm sensors can test materials for strength, heat, resistance, elasticity, etc. Extremely strong. Superior mathematical and geometrical abilities. Often unhappy and homesick for Cybertron.

  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Huffer makes his last appearance in Transformers: The Movie, at the beginning of the Battle of Autobot City. His death in said battle is only mentioned in Dark Awakening, taking place off-screen.
  • The Eeyore: Huffer is constantly pessimistic and seems to view the world in gloomy colors. The episode Divide and Conquer has Prime severely wounded in battle. Huffer is quick to cheer everyone up with lines such as "He's doomed. I know it. I can feel it in my databank." In "The Autobot Run", the Autobots participate in a charity race and fall victim to an ambush. Huffer reacts with ""I knew the racing bit was bad news, but would anyone listen to me? Oh, noooo!"
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: In the episode Dinobot Island, Part 2, Huffer wrestles with a time-traveling mammoth. He defeats the animal and lifts it over his head. Pointing out: "I'm not the biggest Autobot but I'm one of the strongest!"
  • The Resenter: Hates Earth because it keeps him from returning to Cybertron.

Ironhide (アイアンハイド aianhaido)

Function: Security
Alt. Mode: Nissan Sunny-Vanette Coach SGL

"High tech security is no replacement for guts."

One of the older Autobots, Ironhide is Optimus Prime's most-beloved friend and second in command. Whenever Prime himself is out of commission, the responsibility of leadership more often than not falls on the broad-shoulders of this gruff, ancient warrior.

  • Badass Grandpa
  • The Big Guy: Ol' Ironhide often found himself fillin' this role. Might have to do with his Texas drawl, or the fact that he's one o' the Autobot mos' likely ta forgo usin' weapons an' start bustin' Deceptichops with his bare hands.
  • The Blank: The original Diaclone toys were meant to be piloted mechs rather than sentient robots. As a result, the toy of Ironhide (and his Palette Swap Ratchet) lacked a head. The toy box art has a vague eye design on the windshield (pictured above), and the toy itself has a robotic face decal that goes on the vehicle seat, implying that is the robot's head. Later reissues would include a cardboard cutout of Ironhide's head adding a head above the windshield, but this just his body awkward proportions (in particular, this made his arms connect to his abdomen). It would be decades before Ironhide (and Ratchet) got a toy that resembled his animated design.
  • Cool Old Guy
  • Good Ol' Boy
  • Kill It with Ice: Ironhide uses liquid nitrogen spray against Starscream in the episode "Divide and Conquer".
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: He seems to have it more than the others.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy

Jazz (Meister (マイスター maisutā))

Function: Special Operations Agent
Alt. Modes: Martini Racing Porsche 935/76, Futuristic Patrol Officer (Pretender Shell)

"Do it with style or don’t bother doing it."

Jazz loves Earth culture. Always looking to learn more. His knowledge of Earth makes him the indispensable right-hand man to Optimus Prime. Takes most dangerous missions. Very cool, very stylish, very competent. Equipped with photon rifle, flamethrower, full-spectrum beacon, 180db stereo speakers. Creates dazzling, disorienting sound and light shows. Versatile, clever, daring, but prone to be distracted.

Optimus Prime's right-hand man. A danger-loving daredevil with a bottomless bag of tricks. Loves Earth culture, particularly rock n' roll. Outer shell armed with semi-automatic ion pulse gun and deflector shield. Inner robot armed with photon rifle and hydraulic lifters in legs that enable him to jump over fifty feet. In race car mode, equipped with blinding, full-spectrum headlights and deafening 180 decibel speakers. Nitro-injected 12-cylinder engine allows him to reach speeds in excess of Mach 1. Thermal-sensitive windows also provide supplemental solar power.

Mirage (Ligier (リジェ rije))

Function: Spy
Alt. Mode: F-1 Ligier JS11 Racer

"Who and what I am I hide from the enemy."

Mirage is not thrilled about being an Autobot freedom fighter. Prefers hunting turbofoxes on Cybertron with his high-priced friends. Effective fighter, more effective intelligence gatherer. Electro-disrupter can cast illusions altering his physical placement and appearance for up to 6 minutes. Expert marksman with armor-piercing rocket-dart hunting rifle. Unsure of Autobot cause... can't be fully trusted.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: While the storyboard for Transformers: The Movie included a scene depicting Mirage wounded or killed, said scene was never animated. Leaving his disappearance from the series unexplained.
  • Holographic Disguise: Technically this is his actual ability and he can change his superficial appearance any way he likes, but outside of a tiny handful of situations it's almost invariably used only for...
  • Invisibility
  • Master of Illusion: Mirage reveals an ability to project realistic holograms in "Masquerade". An ability typically used by Hound.
  • Spot the Imposter: In "Masquerade", Mirage infiltrates the Decepticons while posing as Drag Strip. Other Autobots impersonate the rest of the Stunticons, counting on the real Stunticons being incapacitated elsewhere. When Drag Strip and his fellows return, a typical Spot the Imposter episode takes place, leading to one of his rare uses of Holographic Disguise when the Autobots form their own Menasor.
  • Upper Class Wit
  • Vehicular Sabotage: In "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3", Mirage infiltrates the Decepticons' space cruiser and sabotages it in mid-flight. Instead of escaping Earth and flying out in outer space, the Decepticons sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Prowl (プロール purōru)

Function: Military Strategist
Alt. Mode: Datsun 280ZX Turbo Police Car

"Logic is the ultimate weapon."

Prowl will keep at a task for as long as it takes. Strives to find reason and logic in everything. A listener, not a talker. Has most sophisticated logic center of all Autobots. Able to analyze and advise on complex combat situations almost instantaneously. Fires wire-guided missiles and high-corrosive acid pellets. The unexpected can often scramble his circuits.

  • Depending on the Writer: He copped this hard in the IDW continuity. Simon Furman and Shane McCarthy wrote him as the Straw Vulcan Jerkass detailed below, Nick Roche's portrayal makes him a Manipulative Bastard, and Mike Costa initially went in a very different direction, before reverting him to Roche's portrayal, with a bit of beat cop thrown in. James Roberts and John Barber have sought to meld the differing portrayals in Prowl's most recent appearances
  • Didn't See That Coming: His character description mentions that Prowl always estimates the most advantageous course of action in any situation. But when confronted by entirely unexpected situations, he loses it.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: He is dedicated to logic and reason. But reportedly this negatively affects his social skills and isolates him from his fellow Autobots.
  • Jerkass: His Straw Vulcan tendencies make him come off as this more often than not, which led to the widely-held belief that Prowl is a prick.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: In IDW's Transformers universe, Prowl has been morally ambiguous for some time, as his actions in Nick Roche-penned works will attest. In the opening arc of John Barber's Robots in Disguise ongoing, Prowl takes further steps towards what many fans believe will be the role of the book's villain.
  • The Lancer: Alternates with Jazz.
  • The Strategist

Ratchet (ラチェット rachetto)

Function: Medic
Alt. Mode: Nissan Cherry Vanette SGL Coach Ambulance

"You break it, I'll remake it."

Ratchet was the best tool-and-die man on Cybertron. In his workbay he can make anything from a pin to a missile. Repairs injured Autobots, given the right parts. Likes to party, give backtalk, but does any job as well as anyone. Has laser scalpels, arc-welders, electron microscopes, circuit sensors, fluid dispensers at his disposal. Sometimes his having a good time interferes with his effectiveness.

  • The Blank: See the entry under Ironhide.
  • Combat Medic: While he is the designated medical officer, Ratchet also participates in the combat. For example, he fly-kicked Thundercracker in "Changing Gears".
  • The Engineer: In the animated series, Ratchet is consistently partnered with Wheeljack when needed to upgrade various devices. The presumption being that the two share similar engineering skills.
  • The Medic
  • Palette Swap: Of Ironhide
  • Screw the War, We're Partying: He's described as a party bot. Not that it comes up much.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the Marvel comics.

Sideswipe (Lambor (ランボル ramboru))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Lamborghini New Countach LP500S

"I don't break rules, I bend them - a lot."

Sideswipe is nearly the equal of his twin brother, Sunstreaker, in the combat arts, but less cold blooded. Relishes a fight to the finish with an opponent. Uses underhanded tactics when absolutely necessary. Arms act as powerful pile drivers. Flies for up to 2 minutes with rocket backpack. Fires flares visible for 18 miles. Rash actions often lead to injuries to himself. Takes them all in stride.

  • Blood Knight\Boisterous Bruiser: His character description specifically mentions that Sideswipe is "more into battle for the sport of it" and "most craves a glorious fight to the finish as a test of his mettle". But there is also mention of a humorous, playful side and a tendency to prank others.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He considers cheating in battle a valid option, "all in the name of possible victory".
  • Didn't Think This Through: In |comic book story "Power Play!" the Autobots are suffering from fuel problems. When the Decepticons attack, Sideswipe decides to use his energy-consuming rocket pack and expends all his energy in said battle. This action leaves him drained and powerless to stop Starscream from claiming a strategic victory for his side. According to his character profile is quite prone to such rash decisions.
  • Flight: Prime had to borrow his rocket pack to go after the Decepticons' spaceship at the end of the original Five Episode Pilot.
  • Robo-Family: His brother Sunstreaker.

Sunstreaker (サンストリーカー sansutorīkā)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: "Super Tuning" Customized Lamborghini Countach LP500S

"They can't beat the best."

The complete egotist, Sunstreaker thinks he is the most beautiful thing on Earth. Loves his sleek styling, contemptuous of other Autobot race cars (particularly his twin Sideswipe). Fires laser-guided ground-to-air rockets and high energy electron pulses at 300 bursts/sec. Tough polymer-steel skin resists artillery. Not a team player. Can be baited into dangerous situations, but is a very calm, competent, and ruthless war machine.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Survived the film but did not appear afterwards. Even in the film, he gets a minor role flying in Optimus and the Dinobots to help Autobot City, but says no lines and disappears after the battle is over.
  • The Dandy: He complains about Decepticons damaging his new paint job. He worries that the colors of his new water skis don't match his base coat. He is definitely the most fashion-conscious of the Autobots and the most obsessed with maintaining the condition of his body.
  • Fantastic Racism: In "Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1", a public relations campaign by Megatron results in most of humanity turning against the Autobots. Sunstreaker expresses his racist views on humans. "I knew the humans would turn on us someday. They're such undependable creatures. Inferior lifeforms."
  • The Fighting Narcissist:
  • Jerkass
  • Palette Swap: Surprisingly subverted. Even though Sunstreaker and Sideswipe transform into essentially the same car, they have completely different toy molds.
  • Robo-Family: his twin brother Sideswipe.
  • Watch the Paint Job
  • Word of Gay: In the Dreamwave comics.

Teletraan I (テレトラン1 teretoranwan)

The semi-sentient computer of the Autobots. Responsible for repairing and reviving both the Autobots and Decepticons after 4 million years. Also responsible for changing their alternate modes from Cybertronian forms to terrestrial vehicles and animals.

  • Magic Tool: Teletraan I manages to revive a small army of Cybertonians and reconfigure their forms without seeming to need any new mechanical parts or additional fuel sources.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: After Casey Kasem quit the show in disgust over its Ethnic Scrappy portrayal of Arabs (Kasem was Lebanese-American), Teletraan I was upgraded to Teletraan II, apparently exactly the same except for the voice.

Trailbreaker (トレイルブレイカー toreirubureikā)

Function: Defensive Strategist
Alt. Mode: Toyota 4WD Hi-Lux Camper Truck

"An Autobot's as good as the fuel in his tank."

Trailbreaker makes light of any situation, no matter how serious. Practical joker and cheerleader, but considers himself a liability to Autobots since he consumes the most fuel. Lacks self-esteem and often asks to be left behind. Projects nearly impenetrable invisible force-field. Can jam radio transmissions. Very slow. Often mopes about his handicaps, but his bravery and defensive prowess is unquestioned.

  • Barrier Warrior: He has a forcefield.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He also has a low self-esteem stemming from feeling that he's The Load. Sometimes he mopes about this.
    • Sad Clown: His bio implies some shades of this
  • Incredibly Obvious Tail: In "More than Meets the Eye, Part 2", Trailbreaker has been assigned to maintain surveillance over the Decepticons' base and spy on their communications. He simply parks out of said base, making little to no effort to hide. Unsurprisingly, this attracts the attention of the Seekers, but only after he leaves.
  • The Prankster
  • The Stakeout: His mission outside the Decepticons' base.

Wheeljack (ホイルジャック hoirujakku)

Function: Mechanical Engineer
Alt. Mode: Lancia "Group 5" Stratos Turbo

"Never do what your enemy expects you to do."

Wheeljack is the mad scientist of the Autobots. Always inventing new weapons and gadgets. Most adept at driving while in car mode. Likes to show off his stunts. Flying range of 800 miles using solid-fuel rockets in arms. Shoots magnetic inducer, shrapnel-needle, and gyro-inhibitor shells from his shoulder cannons. He is his own worst enemy. Often injured while experimenting with new weapons.

  • Back from the Dead: A peculiar instance. In Transformers: The Movie, Wheeljack is one of several characters killed. With his corpse depicted on screen. He re-appears and is actually given a major role in several episodes of Transformers Victory. With no explanation given.
  • The Blank: Not entirely since he has eyes, but Wheeljack seems to lack any kind of mouth. Instead of having a mouth plate that moves when he talks (like Optimus or Soundwave), his ear fins flash with his speech patterns.
  • The Engineer
  • Gadgeteer Genius: That said, his inventions have displayed a noted tendency to literally blow up in his face.
  • Mad Scientist: He's a good and likable guy, but otherwise follows this trope to a T.
  • Ultimate Job Security: At times Wheeljack seems more of a threat than the Decepticons. But gets to keep his job for being exceptional at it. In "S.O.S. Dinobots", Wheejack unleashes his new creations (the Dinobots) within the Autobot's headquarters. Resulting in severe damages. Prime commands him to pull the plug on the project. Wheeljack disobeys direct orders and keeps secretly working on upgrading the Dinobots. It pays off when the upgraded Dinobots turn out to be reliable Super Soldiers.

Windcharger (Charger (チャージャー chājā))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

"Quick action equals quick victory."

Windcharger is the fastest Autobot over short distances. Good in situations requiring fast, decisive action. Enthusiastic but impatient. Short attention span. Casts powerful magnetic field which can attract or repel large metal objects. Smashes them at closer distances. These abilities use up tremendous energy. Often burns himself out due to carelessness.

  • Fragile Speedster: His character description mentions that Windcharger is the fastest land vehicle among the original Autobots. But he is not particularly durable. Keeping this speed up for too long damages his systems. "Windcharger often finds himself stumbling home, reeking of ozone and burned insulation, and needing medical attention".
  • Mauve Paint Job
  • Selective Magnetism: Windcharger's arms can be used as "the poles of a precisely controllable electromagnet, powerful enough to levitate ten tons of steel 700 feet away".
  • The Voiceless: Windcharger had no speaking part in the initial episodes. The first time he speaks was in "Divide and Conquer", the 6th episode of the series.

1984/85 Autobots

The Aerialbots (Airbot (エアーボット eābotto))

Silverbolt (シルバーボルト shirubāboruto)

Function: Aerialbot Leader
Alt. Mode: Concorde SST Jet Liner

"Don't look down, look straight ahead."

Scared of heights. Brave, grimly determined warrior, but he struggles to maintain that image in order to hide his phobia. Selected by Optimus Prime to command so he'd be too busy worrying about others to worry about himself. In jet Mode, speed of Mach 1.9, range 4500 miles. Carries electrostatic battery that releases bolt of up to 150,000 volts through his nose cone. Uses electrostatic discharger rifle in robot Mode. Combines with other Aerialbots to form "Superion".

Slingshot (Sling (スリング suringu))

Function: Ground Troop Support
Alt. Mode: Sea Harrier Jumpjet

"I'm even better than I think."

He won't ever win a Mr. Popularity contest -- incessant braggart, takes credit for exploits of other Autobots. Optimus Prime is supportive since he's hard-working and loyal, but he secretly lacks self-confidence. Vertical-take-off-and-landing aircraft, flies at Mach 1.6, range: 800 miles, extremely maneuverable. Sharpshooter -- has twin mortar cannons as jet, neutron rifle as robot. With fellow Aerialbots forms "Superion".

Skydive (スカイダイブ sukaidaibu)

Function: Air Warfare Strategist
Alt. Mode: F-16 Falcon Fighter Jet

"Only by studying the past can we win the present."

Would rather read about jet fighters than be one... fascinated by the science of aerial warfare. Can, within the limits of his design, duplicate the flying motion of anything he sees... maybe the most skilled flyer of all Transformers. Flies at Mach 2.6, range 1400 miles. Carries laser guided missiles, uses nega-gun that crumbles objects by breaking molecular bonds. Prone to mid-air stalls. With fellow Aerialbots forms "Superion".

Air Raid (Air Rider (エアライダー earaidā))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: F-15 Eagle

"If you look first, you may not leap."

Prefers streaking into a cluster of Decepticons to shooting at them from long range... says, "That always sparks their wires a bit". Tactically, most fearless Aerialbot ... just wants to have fun. Flies at Mach 2.5, range 1500 miles. Carries air-to-air heat seeking missiles, uses torque rifle whose beam applies 80,000 psi of rotational force. With fellow Aerialbots forms " Superion ".

Fireflight (Firebolt (ファイアボルト faiaboruto))

Function: Reconnaissance
Alt. Mode: F-4 Phantom II

"When I'm flying, no enemy is safe - nor friend."

If Aerialbots needed pilots' licenses, he'd never have gotten his... a hazard in the skies. Doesn't pay attention to where he's going since he's too busy marvelling at scenery. Flies at Mach 2.0, range 1000 miles. Carries flammable "fire-fog" missiles, uses photon displacer gun that effects sight by distorting light waves. With fellow Aerialbots forms "Superion".

Superion (スペリオン superion)

Function: Air Warrior

"To live is to fight; to die is to stop."

A fierce and frightful fighting machine. Suppresses thought of the five Aerialbots that comprise him, directs his thinking to one purpose: destruction of Decepticons. Cold, aloof. Flies at 800 mph, range 5800 miles. Can demolish a battleship with one blow. Uses electrostatic discharger rifle. Difficult for him to adapt to new situations or be innovative due to limited mental functions.

  • Acrophobic Bird: Silverbolt
  • Badass Bookworm: Skydive. In his bio it mentions that he might be the most skilled Transformers flier in existence. He's also a history nut and would prefer to read about fighting rather than actually do it.
  • Combining Mecha: To form Superion.
  • Five-Man Band to the Stunticons' Psycho Rangers:
    • The Hero: Silverbolt
    • The Lancer: Slingshot
    • The Smart Guy: Skydive
    • The Big Guy: Air Raid (for sheer insanity) and, arguably, Fireflight (him having the bomber alt-mode, the seriously nasty fire-fog missiles, and his alt having the heaviest armor)
    • The Chick: Fireflight
  • Ironic Fear: Silverbolt is afraid of heights, despite being a giant robot capable of transforming into a jet and being the leader of the Autobots' main air squadron. Despite this, he proves to be a level-headed, extremely qualified leader who always does his duty.
  • Jerkass: Slingshot
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Slingshot, again. Sort of. A case could be made for a few of the other Aerialbots.
  • The Klutz: Fireflight. At Mach 2.
  • The Starscream: Slingshot, for awhile
  • Straight Man: Silverbolt. To pretty much his entire team.

Alpha Trion (Alpha Trin (アルファートリン arufātorin))

Function: Guardian
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Space Cruiser

"Until that day, until all are one."

A very, very old Transformer and mentor the younger generation of Autobots.

Beachcomber (ビーチコンバー bīchikombā or ビーチコマー bīchikomā)

Function: Geologist
Alt. Mode: 1982 M1040 Chenowth "Hellfire" Fast Attack Vehicle

"Know the conflict within before facing the conflict without."

No interest in warfare; prefers long, lone trips into deserts and along coasts... only places he feels he can escape to and relax. Cool-headed, low-key, personable -- what Earthlings call "laid-back". Fights when called upon despite anti-war feelings. Range of 800 miles... can go over very rugged terrain. Sensors can determine chemical composition of land and find needed resources. Susceptible to mental stress.

Blaster (Broadcast (ブロードキャスト burōdokyasuto))

Function: Communications
Alt. Mode: "Ghetto Blaster" Boombox

"When the music is rockin', I'm rollin."

Finds all Earth music interesting, but it's rock'n'roll -- good, hard and loud -- that really sparks his circuits. In the forefront of any situation he's involved in. As AM/FM stereo cassette player, he can perform as deck plus receive radio signals of all frequencies with power outputs as low as 1/1,000,000 watt. Acts as Autobot communications center... can transmit up to 4,000 miles. Carries electro-scrambler gun that disrupts electrical devices.

Chromia (クロミア kuromia)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Transport

"Always outnumbered, never outgunned."

A member of Elita One's Female Autobots, and Ironhide's girlfriend.

Cosmos (Adams (アダムス adamusu))

Function: Reconnaissance & Communications
Alt. Mode: Adamski-Style Flying Saucer

"Reach for the stars, but never leave your friends."

Lonely in outer space... relieves boredom by scaring humans by hovering over their backyards at night or zig-zagging through metor showers. Can achieve Earth orbit, even go to the Moon and back with enough fuel. Acts as communications satellite... optical sensors can see bicycle at 600 miles. Has pinpoint accuracy, high-powered particle beam. Not well suited to function on ground as robot.

  • Captain Crash: While not remarked upon in the TV show, Cosmos is rarely in an episode without crashing into something. One of the few times he got through an episode without it, it seems like Optimus is Tempting Fate by sending him out into space a third time in a day.
  • This Looks Like a Job For Aquaman: He was only ever really used to shuttle two or three Autobots around deep space, and since he's nowhere near as powerful a fighter as Omega Supreme and later, Sky Lynx, he can't do that much else. Even Megatron only put him to use as a power booster after capturing him once.

The Dinobots (ダイノボット dainobotto)

Grimlock (グリムロック gurimurokku)

Function: Dinobot Commander
Alt. Modes: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Human in Knight-Like Armor (Pretender Shell)

"Among the winners, there is no room for the weak."

Most fearsome and powerful Dinobot. Although dedicated to the Autobot cause, resents authority. Cold and merciless, but a valiant warrior. Has contempt for the weak, including all humans. Great strength, uses jaws to break almost anything in two. Carries energon sword and galaxial rocket launcher in Dinobot mode. Other than arrogance and lack of speed, has no real weakness.

A raging, reckless robot. The most fearsome and powerful Dinobot ever. Particularly nasty when he's reminded that he now resembles a human. Outer shell equipped with jet pack and atom smashing submachine gun that pierces all forms of armor and eats away enemy fortifications. Inner robot armed with double-barrelled, self-propelled rocket launcher. In dinosaur mode, serrated steel jaws can tear through solid rock. Jet boosters in legs also provide flight capabilities.

Slag (スラッグ suraggu)

Function: Flamethrower
Alt. Mode: Triceratops

"I have no need for friends, even less for enemies."

Slag is enormously strong, disruptive, and just plain mean-spirited and often brawls with his comrades... which is why they seldom help him when he's in trouble. Despite his nasty, rash personality, he does share their dislike for authority. His mouth shoots 3000 degrees Celcius flames up to 80 feet and he enjoys melting enemies into pools of liquid metal. He isn't too bright and likes shattering brick buildings with his head, he also uses an electron blaster in Dinobot Mode.

Sludge (スラージ surāji or スラッジ surajji)

Function: Jungle Warrior; Demolitions
Alt. Mode: Brontosaurus

"Stomp your enemy, crush him under your feet."

Likes to make presence known -- a footstep can be heard and felt in a 3-mile radius. Gentle and shy, but terrifying and unstoppable in battle. Like other Dinobots, dislikes Optimus. Can exert 40,000 psi via feet -- enough to shatter a bridge. Immense strength and endurance. Adept at fighting in water, swamp, and jungle. Slow, not too clever -- often victim of the calamities he causes.

Snarl (スナール sunāru)

Function: Desert Warrior
Alt. Mode: Stegosaurus

"Only in war is there happiness."

An unhappy loner of few words and fewer opinions. Finds joy only in battle. Hates his Dinobot form, longs to return to Cybertron. Large golden plates on spinal assembly are solar collectors... strength increases tenfold in sunlight. Tail can shatter 20 foot concrete cube. Armored hide resists most missiles. Vulnerable to nighttime attacks due to his weaker state. Slow... uncooperative nature hinders others from helping him.

Swoop (スワープ suwāpu)

Function: Dinobot Bombardier
Alt. Mode: Pteranodon

"Fear can hit targets unreachable to bullets."

Enjoys watching enemies scatter before him as he dives down from the sky... considers spreading fear his greatest weapon. This Dinobot's kind, good-natured side disguised by his horrifing form... even his comrades shy away. Flies at 250mph... air-to-air missile launcher under each wing fires missiles equivalent of 5000lbs. TNT, 8 mile range. As robot, uses launchers and 4000 degrees Celcius thermal sword. Fragile wings vulnerable to enemy firepower.

A quintet of wild and powerful Autobots with dinosaurs as their altmodes. They tend to dislike Optimus Prime, and are prone to going off on their own to do their own thing. Their members include their leader, Grimlock (a Tyrannosaurus Rex), Slag (a triceratops), Snarl (a stegosaurus), Sludge (an apatosaurus) and Swoop (a pteranodon). In some continuities, they were known as the Dynobots before coming to Earth and taking their dinosaur altmodes.

  • Adult Child: Particularly Grimlock, and especially in season 3.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Other Dinobots follow me Grimlock because me Grimlock strongest! Me Grimlock king!
  • The Big Guy: Collectively, they fill this role in relation to the other Autobots.
  • Blood Knight: Snarl finds only happiness in war, but Slag really takes the cake in how much he enjoys fighting.
  • Breath Weapon: They all breathe fire, and it's even hot enough to melt through the durable outer hull of Unicron!
  • Dub Name Change: The Japanese would flip-flop between Slag and Slug, likely because both names are written the same in Japanese.
  • Dumb Muscle: While all Dinobots are this to some extent, Sludge really takes the cake.
  • Everything's Better with Dinosaurs: Well, duh.
  • Five-Man Band: Like most subgroups, they form one on their own:
    • The Hero: Me Grimlock king!
    • The Lancer: Slag.
    • The Big Guy: Sludge, Snarl.
    • Us Dinobots no need puny smart guy! Us Dinobots trounce Decepticons with brute force!
    • Us Dinobots no have puny Chick! Us Dinobots warriors! (Swoop would probably qualify as both. Well, as much as a Dinobot can.)
  • Gentle Giant: Sludge is probably the best example; he's the biggest of the Dinobots but also much friendlier and less aggressive than Grimlock, Slag or Snarl. Swoop, while the smallest Dinobot, is also the nicest and most easy-going, and has on occasion functioned as as a Gentle Giant to smaller Autobots or even humans.
    • Yes, Grimlock is a violent killer who respects only strength, which also means he hates anyone who abuses strength (AKA, those who use it to bully the weak), giving him a brutal sense of compassion that eventually allowed him to soften into a still-savage-but-kind-hearted warrior.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Slag all the way. Just about anything will set him off. Anything.
  • Hulk Speak: Me Grimlock talk this way most of time. Other Dinobots too, mostly.
  • Informed Attribute: The toy specs give Grimlock a 7 in intelligence and Snarl and Swoop both rate a 6.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Snarl rarely, if ever, displays any sort of emotion. And he's just as expressive when it comes to talking.
  • Multiple Choice Past: It varies by continuity. Were me Grimlock and other Dinobots built on Earth in 1980s by puny Wheeljack? Or did we Dinobots exist already and get stuck in black sticky stuff when fighting Shockwave in distant past?
    • Or even a variation of the second one, fighting the Insecticons rather than Shockwave.
  • Odd Name Out: Grimlock is the only Dinobot whose name doesn't begin with S.
  • Playing with Fire: Slag
  • The Rival: Swoop with the Predacon Divebomb. It began when Swoop's name was Divebomb and that 'Con defeated him and took his name.
  • Stock Dinosaurs: Including a pteranodon, which as we all know is not a dinosaur.

Emirate Xaaron (ザロン zaron)

Function: Resistance Leader
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Hover Car

"He who would fight for peace must first understand war."

Emirate Xaaron is the leader of the Autobot underground resistance movement on Cybertron and was the chairman of the Council of Autobo Elders. He is not a fighter, but his strength is found in his convictions. Xaaron, through physically unimposing, speaks and acts with incredible confidence that grows from his irreverent brand of wisdom. A few under his command wish he weren't such a "willy old buzzard," since Xaaron's touch is about as subtle as a boulder to the head.

Elita One (エリータ・ワン erīta wan)

Function: Recon Specialist
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Car

"Fear is an illusion, thus one must not perceive it."

The leader of the Female Autobots and Optimus Prime's lover.

Firestar (ファイヤースター faiyāsutā)

Function: Emergency Crew
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Rapid Response Vehicle

"I got your back!"

A member of Elita One's Female Autobots who specialises in search and rescue.

Grapple (グラップル gurappuru)

Function: Architect
Alt. Mode: Mitsubishi Fuso Hook-Crane Truck

"Beauty is in everything except war."

On Cybertron, his buildings are considered works of art. On Earth, his ideas are limited by war. Takes pride in his work, prone to severe depression if they're destroyed in battle. As crane, can lift up a 35-ton object and position it with precision and grace. As robot, has high-temperature arc-welder rifle... can launch rockets 4.5 miles from wrist sockets. Prone to breakdown in vehicle mode.

Hoist (ホイスト hoisuto)

Function: Maintenance
Alt. Mode: Toyota Hi-Lux Pickup Truck

"You have to be rolling before you can be fighting."

"No exceptions!" -- All Autobots must submit to his maintenance schedule... knows they must operate at peak efficiency in battle. Jovial, enjoys job and is good at it -- will find any problem, from engine overhaul to smallest leaky gasket. As tow truck, hauls 40,000 lbs. As robot, very strong -- launches heat-seeking missiles from wrist sockets. Full spectrum multi-sensor behind his head determines an objects' composistion, density, tensile strength, energy properties.

  • The Medic: A variation, his toy bio indicates that his specialty is in maintenance (making sure that his fellow Autobots are in tip-top shape) rather than repairs, but this distinction never shows up in the cartoon.
  • Palette Swap: to Trailbreaker.
  • The Watson: To Grapple, often cheering him on to make his creations.

Inferno (インフェルノ inferuno)

Function: Search & Rescue
Alt. Mode: Mitsubishi Fuso F-Series FT Fire Ladder Truck

"Where there's smoke, there's me."

The hotter things get, the better he likes it, and this goes for fires AND fights! Inferno can do anything Earth fire trucks can in vehicular mode, but is often distracted from his job to engage in combat. His great strength is thanks to his ceramic-plated armored skin that can withstand 8000 degrees Celcius. He also has an extinguisher rifle that shoots flame-suppressing foam, an energy dampening beam to counter other beams and forearms that shoot missiles. Unfortunately, he doesn't follow orders well and isn't very mobile as a robot.

Jetfire/Skyfire (スカイファイアー sukaifaiā)

Function: Air Guardian
Alt. Mode: Macross VF-1S Super Valkyrie

"Among mysteries of science lies the key to victory."

Swiftest Autobot. Daring in battle... believes victory will come via technological advancement. Adds twin scramjet modules and liquid hydrogen fuel tanks to escape Earth's gravity. A member of Elita One's Female Autobots and reportedly the best sharpshooter in the galaxy.

Omega Supreme (オメガ・スプリーム omega supurīmu)

Function: Defense Base
Alt. Mode: Rocket Base, Rocket, and Tank

"Unyielding resolve has no conqueror."

The ultimate defensive force. Great strength, even greater courage. Serious, even grim... last line of Autobot defense. Protects the Ark and all else vital to his cause. As robot, can shatter a mountainside, lift 300,000 tons with clawed arm, destroy 12' steel cube with plasma blaster arm... has head-mounted laser cannon. Can transform to laser cannon tank and launching pad with rocket. Rocket can achieve planetary orbit.

Perceptor (パーセプター pāseputā)

Function: Scientist
Alt. Mode: Microscope

"One's ultimate truth lies in one's molecular structure."

Unquenchable thirst for knowledge... seeks it to exclusion of all else... Main role is to study the best ways the Autobots can adapt to Earth. Extremely smart. Scientific specialties are metallurgy, molecular chemistry, electrical engineering. As microscope, capable of powerful magnification. Lens barrel converts into powerful light cannon. Carries concussion rifle in robot mode. Absent minded. Lenses are his weakest part.

Powerglide (パワーグライド pawāguraido)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: A-10 Thunderbolt II "Warthog" Ground-Attack Jet

"To stop me, you have to catch me first."

A show off... proud that he's one of few Autobots that can fly. Incredible maneuverability... delights in displaying his dazzling aerial virtuousity, to friends or foes... just wants their appreciation of his talent. Cruises at 500mph... can increase power output and speed to 3200mph for short periods. Carries small concussion bombs... shoots thermal beam as plane and robot. Gets into more troubles with enemy planes thanhe can handle.

The Protectobots (プロテクトボット purotekutobotto)

Hot Spot (ホットスポット hottosupotto)

Function: Protectobot Leader
Alt. Mode: Mitsubishi Fuso Great Fire Engine

"Rust never sleeps, and neither do I."

Likes to be where the action is. Charismatic, inspiring... other Protectobots have trouble keeping up with his non-stop pace. Believes in being maximally operational every moment of one's life. His fire truck hose shoots high-pressure water 1200 feet. As robot, can press 60,000 pounds, uses fireball cannons that shoot bursts of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit blue flame 1.5 miles. With fellow Protectobots, forms "Defensor".

Groove (グルーブ gurūbu)

Function: Scout
Alt. Mode: Motorcycle

"War is a problem, never a solution."

A full tank, clear skies, open road -- that's all he wants out of life. Relaxed, easy going, happy whereever he is. Pacifist -- difficult for him to accept his role as part of the Protectobot team. Speed: 140mph, range: 800 miles. Uses twin vaporators, which shoot mists of oxidizing, freezing, and corrosive liquids; and photon pistol. Combines with fellow Protectobots to form "Defensor".

First Aid (ファーストエイド fāsutoeido)

Function: Doctor
Alt. Mode: Datsun Vanette C120 Ambulance

"An ounce of maintenance is worth a pound of cure."

Hates seeing any machine in pain -- even those who don't know it, like a broken street lamp or an overheated car. Compassionate, cautious -- will restrict an Autobot to repair bay for faulty directional signal. Carries dual-barreled decrystallizer cannon -- weakens metal by disrupting crystalline structure -- and photon pistol. Fists shoot laser beams used for welding in surgery. With fellow Protectobots, combines to form "Defensor".

Streetwise (ストリートワイズ sutorītowaizu)

Function: Interceptor
Alt. Mode: Nissan 300ZX Turbo Police Car

"You have to know where you are before you know what to do."

Nothing escapes his notice... amazing capacity to adapt to understand his environment. Clever and determined -- nothing deters him from seekinmg his prey -- except an empty fuel tank. As car, has powerful double-mounted air-compressor cannon with 50 mile range; as robot uses blinding photon pistol. With fellow Protectobots forms "Defensor". Sometimes overheats as car.

Blades (Graze (グレイズ gureizu))

Function: Air Support
Alt. Mode: Bell UH-1V Iroquois "Huey" Rescue Helicoptor

"War's a dirty game - and I'm a dirty player."

Basically a street fighter -- prefers using rotor blades for slashing Decepticons rather than for flying. Considers long-range air attacks unsporting, cowardly. Maximum speed: 400mph; range 1200 miles. Twin launchers fire "smart" rockets that seek targets based on encoded computer images. Uses photon pistol. Combines with fellow Protectobots to form "Defensor".

Defensor (Guardian (ガーディアン gādian))

Function: Super Warrior

"As long as one innocent being is threatened, none are truly free."

Views humans as if they were his own children -- will expend his last drop of fuel to protect them. Seeks human friendship, but humans fear his hulking, mechanical form. Can lift 300,000 pounds with one hand. Impervious to most artillery, can surround himself with force field for brief periods. Carries fireball cannon... shoots 2000 degree bursts of blue fire 1.5 miles.

Red Alert (Alert (アラート arāto))

Function: Security Director
Alt. Mode: Lamborghini New Countach LP500S Fire Chief's Car

Excellent sensory perception. Fast in vehicular mode. Carries 25 mile range rocket launcher and particle beam rifle. Prone to rash judgements which can lead to injury to himself and comrades.

  • Conspiracy Theorist: Thinks that everyone's out to get him.
    • Never Live It Down: His spotlight episode happened to be one in which he spent most of the time running around with brain (processor?) damage due to an accident. The manic paranoia stemming from said damage was taken as the norm and run with by the fandom even though it had been fixed by the end of the episode. (Not to say he isn't legitimately paranoid, though.)
  • Fire Department Lamboes Are Hot
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: Him and Inferno are CLOSE.
  • Palette Swap: Of Sideswipe.
  • Improbably Cool Car: His altmode is a fire chief's car. Do you know any fire chiefs who drive Lamborghinis?

Roadbuster (ロードバスター rōdobasutā)

Function: Ground Assault Commander
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Jeep

"War is a dirty business... and I'm as dirty as they come."

Likes to pass the time 'demolishing Decepticons'. Not happy if not fighting... bores easily, quietest of Autobots when not in battle. Charismatic in combat... inspiring to fellow warriors. Natural leader. Can traverse most terrains as 4-WD, 600 mile range. Carries turret-mounted linear blaster gun... can blow a hole in 2-foot thick concrete. As a robot has laser rifle and shrapnel-missile launcher.

  • Blood Knight: He's not happy unless he's fighting Decepticons. Else, he can be downright gloomy and depressing.
  • Guns Akimbo

Seaspray (シースプレー shīsupurē)

Function: Naval Defense
Alt. Mode: Propellered Hovercraft

"Be unyielding as the ocean waves and your enemies shall fall."

Displays a zest for his job unmatched by fellow Autobots. Loves the ocean and its creatures... unhappy when he returns to land and reverts to robot form. Loves the thrill of naval battle. Can go 120 knots, 4000 mile range. Has sonar radar and underwater and surface-to-air lasers, also used in robot mode. Wheels allow limited land travel. Not too strong or mobile as robot.

Skids (スキッズ sukizzu)

Function: Theoretician
Alt. Mode: Honda City Turbo

"Deep down, we are more like than unlike humans."

A daydreamer... often bumps into things at 60 mph while pondering Earth life instead of a Decepticon attack. Considers Earth one vast lab for his research. His findings are often invaluable to fellow Autobots. Enormous memory storage capacity. Carries a liquid nitrogen rifle with 600 foot range. Twin electron blaster of 20,000 volts can short-circuit almost anything. At 60 mph can stop within 25 feet. Not very fast... often in danger due to daydreaming.

Smokescreen (スモークスクリーン sumōkusukurīn)

Function: Diversionary Tactician
Alt. Mode: Nissan Fairlady Z (Datsun 280ZX-R)

"A look can be deceiving; a touch can be lethal."

Whether engaged in raging battle or friendly conversation, an ulterior purpose usually exists. Job is to lead enemy astray. Sneaky, but charming and affable... considered most devious yet most trusted of Autobots. In car Mode, emits thick smoke from tailpipe... attracts to metal. In robot Mode, shoots missiles which wreak havoc on enemy aircraft radar and guidance systems... electro-disrupter rifle shorts out electrical targets.

Topspin (トップスピン toppusupin) and Twin Twist (ツインツイスト tsuintsuisuto)

Function: Land & Sea Assault (Topspin), Demolitions (Twin Twist)
Alt. Modes: Amphibious Cybertronian Vehicle (Topspin), Cybertronian Twin-Drill Tank (Twin Twist)

Topspin: "The thrill is the journey."
Twin Twist: "War is wherever I want it to be."

No mountain high enough, no river wide enough to stop Topsin of the wrecking crew. Has superior mobility due to his Cybertronic vehicular form. Views conquest of rough terrain as much a victory as beating Decepticons. Uses 2 rear jet engines to go 300mph... goes 80mph on water with 2 front pontoons... has 2 hi-voltage electric cannons and 2 hand lasers built in... carries a powerful twin ion impulse blaster.

Nothing feels better to him than sinking his drills into a slab of steel. Loves the scrap metal results of his destructive fury and showing off... will attack anything: enemy Decepticon or harmless lamppost. Optimus Prime worries about his uncontrollable nature. Goes 200mph... has two 6000rpm diamond-tipped drills... twin ion impulse blaster shoots explosive 100lb TNT shells. Goes from vehicle to robot in .4 seconds.

  • Badass Bookworm: Topspin is a former cartographer who mainly joined the Wreckers to keep an eye on his brother.
  • Drill Tank: Twin Twist's alt-mode.
  • This Is a Drill: Twin Twist has two, befitting his name.

Tracks (トラックス torakkusu)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Corvette Stingray with Retractable Wings

"Looking good is what life is all about."

Called "lousy Earth-lover" by some fellow Autobots because he prefers sleek Earth car form to original robot form. Thinks they're jealous of his good looks, but they feel struggle against Decepticons should be his top concern. As car goes 280mph... uses wings under rear fenders for sub-sonic flight. As car or robot uses launcher to fire heat-seeking incendiary missiles 60 miles. Has blinding black beam gun.

Warpath (ワーパス wāpasu)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: General Motors M551A1 Sheridan ARAAV Tank

"A good shot is worth more than a good intention."

Thinks he is more impressive than his comrades do...likes to show off his sharpshooting. Boisterous, loud-mouthed...raucious sense of humor makes him welcome company. Vain----upset by even the smallest scratch in his gun barrel. Can go 30 mph over roughest terrain, hit a hex nut 1.5 miles away. Shoots explosives, thermal, cryogenic, acid, and sonic shells. Great strength but helpless if upended.

Whirl (ホワール howāru)

Function: Aerial Assault
Alt. Mode: Bell AH-1 Cobra-Based Cybertronian Attack Helicopter

"If used logically, madness makes a great weapon."

Loves his job... careens across the sky spinning and weaving wild, crazy patterns. Believes enemies are more terrified of him if he acts wild during an attack. Flies at 400 mph, range 1600 miles. Amazing maneuverability... can fly at almost any angle. Carries four incendiary-shell cannons hi-energy photon beam rifle. Great strength as a robot... has null-ray module on hand, paralyzo box on leg. Reckless... prone to rotor blade damage.

  • Ax Crazy: James Roberts took the above quote about madness and spun it into Whirl literally being insane.
  • Badass: Comes with the territory of being a Wrecker.
  • Characterization Marches On: In Whirl's early appearances in the IDW-verse, while we admittedly didn't really get inside his head, Whirl was simply another badass Wrecker. It was only when James Roberts got ahold of him that the other tropes here really started to apply.
  • Robotic Psychopath
  • Sociopathic Hero: Despite this, he's still considered a good guy, by virtue of being an Autobot.

1986 Autobots

Hot Rod (Hot Rodimus (ホットロディマス hottorodimasu))/Rodimus Prime (Rodimus Convoy (ロディマスコンボイ rodimasukonboi))

Function: Cavalier (Hot Rod), Protector (Rodimus Prime)

Firebolt (ファイアーボルト faiāboruto)

Alt. Mode: Electrostatic Discharger Rifle

Hot Rod is an all-American-boy Autobot. He's a typical adolescent who dreams of being heroic and important. He tends to not follow rules too closely. Although he means well, Hot Rod's impulsive actions often get him into trouble. He carries two photon lasers that temporarily electromagnetize an enemy robot's microcircuts. Speed: 120mph. Range: 4 miles. He can be hotheaded, but he's always a well meaning, admirable lad and a brave and honorable fighter.

Rodimus Prime is a vanguard for the Autobot ranks. Possesses acute military prowess. Speaks with the savvy of seasoned veteran. Expert tactician with exceptional maneuverability in battle. Can be hot-headed at times. Has a tendency to act first and ask questions later. In robot mode, carries a photon eliminator that shoots high voltage electricity. Range: 500 miles. Speed: 200mph. Sole purpose is to protect all life. His only weakness is his compassion for other living creatures.

Targetmaster Hot Rod dreams of great heroics, but he acts like an immature adolescent. Impulsive, friendly, not too good at following orders. Often goes off on his own adventures with Firebolt, his electrostatic discharger rifle, who led a quiet scholarly life as Nebulos' top atomic physics scientist until he became the thrill-seeking Hot Rod's partner, Firebolt is excited, but nervous, about the prospect. In vehicle mode, maximum speed: 330 mph, range: 150 miles.

  • Always Someone Better: Rodimus never felt he lived up to Optimus' legacy as the Autobot leader.
  • The Chains of Commanding
  • The Chosen One
  • Empathic Weapon: Dr Sparks/Firebolt who was killed in the Marvel UK comics at some point prior to Hot Rod becoming Rodimus Prime
  • Humanity Ensues: Rodimus' consciousness is put into a synthoid human body in the episode "Only Human."
  • I Have Many Names
  • Kid Hero: Well, a kid by Cybertronian standards, at least.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: His interference in Optimus' fight against Megatron in The Movie led to Optimus' death.
    • The comics (knowingly?) set up a similar situation, but subverted the trope: Optimus realizes that a battle with the Decepticons was staged to leave Ratchet and the Ark defenseless, and he sends the rest of the Autobots back to the ship, which leaves him alone against all of the Decepticons on Earth. Hot Rod bails out at the last minute and returns to help Optimus, and when Pretender Starscream attacks, it's his shot on the Pretender shell that turns the tide of the fight.
  • Replacement Scrappy: In-Universe. Not many were happy about him leading after he got Optimus killed. Even Rodimus himself felt inferior to Optimus. Extends into real life to a degree.
  • Transformation Trinket: If the Matrix of Leadership is removed, Rodimus Prime will revert back to Hot Rod.
  • Unlikely Hero: The brash teenager who becomes Autobot leader.

Arcee (アーシー āshī)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Sports Car

"Looks are always deceiving."

Arcee is one of the most dangerous Autobots, despite her comparatively small size. She believes the Decepticons must be stopped at all costs. That belief, combined with her combat training, makes her a pure warrior, a hunter who mixes speed and sudden action to strike the Decepticons whenever she can.

  • Ax Crazy: In IDW's comics, Arcee was forcibly converted into a female Transformer by the mad scientist Jhiaxus, which had the side effect of making her a psychotic assassin obsessed with tracking him down.
  • Badass Family: Her great-nephew is Rattrap.
  • Humanity Ensues: Arcee's consciousness is put into a synthoid human body in the episode "Only Human."
  • Losing Your Head: She becomes a Headmaster in "The Rebirth."
  • Mama Bear: She acts as a mother figure to Daniel Witwicky, and pity anyone who threatens the boy.
  • Pink Means Feminine
  • The Smurfette Principle: Even though some female Autobots had previously appeared, Arcee was the first one to become a regular cast member, and the only one for some time.
  • Toyless Toyline Character: For the duration of the series. She later got a toy as a repaint of Blackarachnia for Bot-Con 2001 and another in 2008 as part of Binaltech, but none with her original appearance.

Blurr (ブラー burā)

Function: Data Courier
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Hovercar

"The faster it is, the better I like it."

Haywire (ヘイワイアー heiwaiā or ヘイワイヤー heiwaiyā)

Alt. Mode: Electro-Laser Cannon

Blurr is the fastest Autobot on land. He's a close descendent to a thoroughbred Cybertronic race horse, and a superior messenger. He can quickly whisk information from one place to another. In robot mode, he carries an electro-laser that reverses the polarity of an enemy robot's microcircuts and leaves them motionless. Range: 10 miles. In vehicular mode, he can travel faster than the speed of sound, leaving a blurred image in his trail.

Targetmaster Blurr is the fastest Autobot land vehicle -- and he talks even faster; often has to be told to slow down so he can be understood. Nervous, high-strung, loyal, determined. Paired with Haywire, excitable Nebulan teenager whose impulsiveness makes him a chancy electro-laser cannon, at best. In vehicle mode, maximum speed: 750mph, range: 1500 miles.

Kup (Chear (チャー chā))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Cybertonian Pickup Truck

"The past is the greatest teacher."

Recoil (リコイル rikoiru)

Alt. Mode: Musket Laser

Kup is an old veteran warhorse with a thousand tall tales from his ten thousand adventures. He has a motto or word of advice for any situation and he's as brave and loyal as they come. In robot mode, he carries an old-style musket laser that shoots short bursts of metal corrosive hydrochloric acid. Range: 5 miles. Speed: 100mph. Kup sees himself as a seasoned campaigner with more knowledge and experience to share. Other Autobots aren't always receptive to his advice.

Targetmaster Kup is a grizzled veteran with 10,000 tall tales from his 1,000 adventures -- has advice for his pals in any situation, whether they want to hear it or not. Recoil, his Nebulan partner, is an old style musket laser and former all-world prismaball (most popular sport on Nebulos) player. In vehicle mode, maximum speed: 100 mph, range: 800 miles.

  • Communications Officer: In Wings Of Honor he serves as this on Thunderclash's ship.
  • Cool Old Guy
  • Empathic Weapon: Recoil
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from being a pickup truck.
  • The Mentor: Specifically to Hot Rod, but IDW has him teaching a lot of other Autobots, including Optimus.
  • New Meat: His younger self in Wings Of Honor.
  • Seen It All: And he'll tell you War Stories about them all too!!
  • Time Abyss: All of the Transformers are this, really, but it's particularly noticably with Kup. How old is he? Well, no concrete numbers are given, and the continuities vary, but take, for example, the G1 cartoon. There, the war against Megatron began 9 million years ago, and Optimus Prime took control when it began. Kup is portrayed as being significantly older than Optimus Prime. That means Kup could potentially be twelve million years old or more!
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Ditto.

Broadside (ブロードサイド burōdosaido)

Function: Air and Sea Assault
Alt. Modes: Aircraft Carrier or Jet Fighter

"I like the sea far away and my feet on the ground."

Doesn't like transforming into carrier or jet -- gets seasick on water, has fear of heights. Effective, valiant warrior, but other Autobots wish he wouldn't gripe so much. Expands to 1200 ft length as carrier, capable of landing jets and carrying other Autobots. 15,000 mile range, 40 knots maximum speed. Projects 80,000 volt electric field around himself in jet mode. Has high-energy plasma-pulse gun and shattering vibro-ax in robot mode.

Eject (イジェクト ijekuto)

Function: Electronic Surveillance
Alt. Mode: Cassette Tape

"Clutch hitting is the key to an effective offense."

An Earthen sports fanatic... sports cliches clutter his conversation; a suprise attack is a "fast break", a victory is a "touchdown". Few Autobots understand but they like the enthusiasm with which he says it. Could be a play-by-play announcer, if given the chance. In cassette mode, can monitor and record local radio and TV, decode scrambled signals, tap telephones. In robot mode, uses electrical overload guns. Sometimes his internal tape snaps when he's excited.

Hubcap (ハブキャップ habukyappu)

Function: Communications
Alt. Mode: Porsche 924 Turbo

"Weapons can win battles, but words can win wars."

Has everybody's friendship, nobody's trust. Affable, witty, generous, charming, but a con artist. Living proof of the Cybertronian adage, "You can't tell an Autobot by its finish." Head module equipment receives AM and FM radio, shortwave, UHF, and VHF television signals as weak as .000001 watts. Maximum speed of 90mph, range: 1000 miles.

Metroplex (Metroflex (メトロフレックス metorofurekkusu))

Function: Battle Station
Alt. Modes: City or Battle Station

"Vigilance is the foundation on which victories are built."

Startlingly versatile, staggeringly strong, the Autobot's last line of defense... a mighty instrument of titanic destructive force. Extremely modest about his achievements... berates himself for not doing more. In robot mode, he can lift 70,000 tons, has shoulder-mounted twin high-energy maser cannons and omni-directional receiving and transmitting antenna. In city mode, has helipad and fully equipped repair bays that can handle four vehicles at once. Left rear tower transforms into tank, Slammer, who has rocket-propelled mortar cannon. Scamper is sports car with side mounted electro-blasters; transforms into robot, uses high-energy particle beam pistol. Six-Gun is small robot, has ion-pulse rifles for arms, twin surface-to-air guided missile launchers on back, acetylene pistol. In battle station mode, uses all these weapons and twin disrupter rays, laser lances, powerful anti-matter projectors.

Outback (アウトバック autobakku)

Function: Gunner
Alt. Mode: Suzuki Jimny SJ20

"Rules are detours on the road of life."

Thinks going by the book is going the long way. Doesn't follow plans -- or roads! Cuts across parking lots, sidewalks, backyards to get where he's going. Travels at 110mph, range 800 miles, his 4-wheel drive handles roughest terrain, climbs grades up to 50 degrees. Carries turret-mounted mortar cannon that shoots armour-piercing shells.

Pipes (パイプス paipusu)

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Single-Axle Semi Truck

"One being's junk is another's art."

Fascinated by seemingly worthless Earthen gadgetry -- carrot juicers, musical wrist-watches, electrical hair combers, etc.. Collects them in unused corner of Ark, creating a mini museeum of American consumerisim. Travels at 100mph, range 400 miles, hauls up to 60 tons. Twin exaust pipes emit corrosive gases that can dissolve 2" thick steel slab in 10 minutes.

Ramhorn (Amhorn (アムホーン amuhōn))

Function: Warrior
Alt. Mode: Cassette Tape

"Flee before me or else you'll fall before me."

Don't touch him if you value your life, 'cause he'll smash you. Extremely territorial, nasty hair-trigger temper. Best way to deal with him is from a distance. His charge is virtually unstoppable -- can knock a train off its tracks or upend an 18-wheeler with one blow. Has two batteries of three laser-guided, heat-seeking missiles that can lock in and hit a target up to twelve miles away. As cassette, can vibrate and destroy any equipment into which he is inserted.

Rewind (リワインド riwaindo)

Function: Archivist
Alt. Mode: Cassette Tape

"Too much information is never enough."

Autobot trivia expert -- his memory banks have amazing capacity to store data that is virtually of no use to anyone. Not much help when asked about something important. Internal light-matrix data store system has nearly infinite data storage capacity. Can turn into blinding beacon by releasing some of this light energy. Uses adhesion rifles that shoot unbreakable metal-bonding glue. Prone to severe cerebro-circuit overloads, what Earthlings call "headaches".

Sandstorm (サンドストーム sandosutōmu)

Function: Recconnaissance
Alt. Modes: Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low Transport Helicopter or "Sand Rail" Dune Buggy

"When the smoke clears, I've cleared out."

Always takes death-defying risks. Anything less than dangerous is boring to him. In battle, gets close enough to count the bolts in Decepticon armor plates. As helicopter and buggy, he's adept at using rotors and exhaust to whip up blinding clouds of dust and sand. Extremely maneuverable. Carries sandblaster gun that shoots streams of silicate particles that can erode anything.

Sky Lynx (スカイリンクス sukairinkusu)

Function: Lieutenant Commander
Alt. Modes: Space Shuttle with Cargo Hold (Combined); Prehistoric Bird & Lynx (Split)

"The best achievements are worth repeating."

A powerful fighter. Self-centered and boastful. Fearless, daring, believes himself to be superior to many of his fellow Autobots. Shell-resistent and steel-reinforced hull can withstand enemy bombardment and extreme temperature variations. Possesses solar powered auxiliary engines. Acetylene blaster inside cockput shoots 3000 degree celcius flames. As space shuttle, has interplanetary travel capabilities -- maximum speed 30,000 mph, range 40,000,000 miles.

  • Combining Mecha: Of a sort. His space shuttle half and cargo carrier half can separate into a dino-bird and a lynx, but both are the same mind and personality. They can also remain together as a four-legged dragon-like beast. In vehicle mode he is always combined, the shuttle is never without the cargo section.
  • Everything's Better with Dinosaurs: Well, part of him anyway, though it might be more dragon than dino.
  • Insufferable Genius: His huge form is dwarfed by his massive ego. He's got the skills and power to back it up, though.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: To his credit, he can back most of it up, it just makes him kind of annoying to deal with.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Sky Lynx effectively replaced Omega Supreme as the giant warrior and group transportation in the third season. Omega did have a few appearances, though, and an entire episode where he got to trounce Decepticons on the Planet of Junk (and the only episode where Omega and Sky Lynx appeared together).

Springer (Sprung (スプラング supurangu))

Function: Aerial Defense
Alt. Modes: Futuristic Armored Car or Similarly-Designed Helicopter

"Strength is more than physical."

A wise-cracking, sharp witted adventurer. Powerful Autobot fighter with a massive physique and an easy-going manner. Possesses incredible "springing" power in his legs. Travels long distances with pogo-like motion. In robot Mode, carries a laser that produces giant wind tunnels. Helicopter blade transforms into a light saber that can cut through concrete. Optimistic and good humored.

Steeljaw (スチールジョー suchīrujō)

Function: Tracker
Alt. Mode: Cassette Tape

"What the eyes don't see, the nose knows."

When he's on the hunt, his prey is as good as caught. Determined, tenacious, cooly professional when on a mission. Likely to trace any scent. Range of 800 miles. Super-strong jaws -- can snap a foot thick steel cable with one bite. Carries two solar-powered pellet guns that fire 1200 rounds per minute. Lack of sunlight hampers the guns' performance. Can electromagnetize himself in cassette Mode. Prone to rusting.

Swerve (Werve (ウェーブ wēbu))

Function: Metallurgist
Alt. Mode: 4WD Pickup Truck

"Molecular structure is the key to understanding."

If Autobots had drivers licenses, his would have been revoked. A menace on highways. Doesn't pay attention to where he's going or the orders he's being given - easily distracted by anything. Hands' sensors can determine physical and chemical properties of metals. Goes 120mph, range 500 miles in car Mode. Gets into lots of accidents.

Tailgate (テイルゲイト teirugeito)

Function: Scout
Alt. Mode: Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

"Let my fellow mechanical beings go!"

He sometimes has his mind stuck in low gear, believes 55mph, speed limit is infringement on rights of cars. Garages are prisons to him... doesn't understand Earth machines are not alive. Goes 180mph, range 600 miles. Uses ferrocobalt magnet under hood to be pulled by and within a few feet of other vehicles, reducing his fuel use to near zero. Prone to overheating.

Ultra Magnus (ウルトラマグナス urutoramagunasu)

Function: City Commander
Alt. Mode: White Freightliner WFT-8664T Cabover Semi-Trailer Truck

"Consistency is victory."

Ultra Magnus is all soldier. Most comfortable when carrying out Optimus Prime's orders. Possesses magnificent fighting skills, courage, and a gift for battlefield improvisation. Uncomfortable in the mantle of leadership, but presents strong profile as a commander. Carries missile launchers capable of hitting a target 30 miles away. Resolute, fair, and courageous beyond reproach. Ever ready to sacrifice himself for the good of men and mission.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In the original Diaclone, the car carrier was created to be an alternate trailer for Battle Convoy (Optimus Prime) that would become Powered Armor for him, creating Powered Convoy. Transformers created Ultra Magnus as an original, separate character.
  • Arch Nemesis: Of Galvatron.
  • Big Badass Rig: Becomes one.
  • Bounty Hunter: His IDW incarnation works as an enforcer, hunting down anyone, Autobot or Decepticon, that violates the Tyrest Accord.
  • Catch Phrase: "I can't deal with that right now." Ascribed to him by Memetic Mutation, though he only says it the once, in a situation that's understandable in context.
  • The Comically Serious: IDW Ultra Magnus is essentially the ultimate old-fashioned Straight Man, especially in "More Than Meets the Eye". Even when he's actually trying to be up-to-date and/or give snappy one-liners, he fails miserably.

"All weapons are trained on them in case they try something 'hilarious.'"

  • Good Counterpart: To Cyclonus.
  • Humanity Ensues: Maguns' consciousness is put into a synthoid human body in the episode "Only Human."
  • Number Two: To Optimus or Rodimus. It's how he prefers it.
  • Palette Swap: The cab is one of Optimus Prime. The car carrier is original, though.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: So brave and honorable he is respected by Autobots AND Decepticons.
  • Robo-Family: Sometimes said to be Optimus Prime's brother.
  • Worthy Opponent: He respects Cyclonus as a brother warrior, and the feeling is mutual.

Wheelie (ウィーリー wīrī)

Function: Survivalist
Alt. Mode: Futuristic Car Based on a 1956 Fiat Abarth

"Only the fierce shall live."

Wheelie is the sole survivor from a party of intergalactic colonists who crash landed on Earth. He's a barbaric little savage who managed to stay alive by cunning, stealth, and fearlessness. Speaks in odd rhyming sentences and despises the Decepticons. Fights only when he's under attack and has to defend himself. Staunch friend to the Dinobots and a reliable ally for Hot Rod and Kup.

Wreck-Gar (レックガー rekkugā)

Function: Junkion Leader
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian "Junk" Motorcycle

"Collect and save, collect and save."

Wreck-Gar leads the Junkions, a race of junk robots. He's made of rusted scraps, chassis bits, manifold parts, and dented odds and ends. A little scatterbrained, he speaks in odd-ryming, pieced-together sentences. His words are a junkyard collection of broadcast fragments from T.V. commercials and radio jingles. In robot mode, he carries an armor axe and a decelerator laser that inhibits an enemy robot's flow of cerebral impulses.

Impactor (インパクター impakutā)

Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Drill Tank

Impactor is the legendary former leader of the Wreckers, an elite Autobot strike team, and as such is a deadly force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. His body is covered with weaponry, from the tank cannon on his shoulder, to the missiles hidden in his chest, to the handgun strapped to his leg, and finally his signature harpoon weapon that replaces his right hand. His audacity and resolve is what puts him in the history books, for better or for worse.

1987 Autobots

Fortress Maximus (フォートレスマキシマス fōtoresumakishimasu)

Function: Headmaster Leader
Alt. Modes: Defense Base or Starship

"Prepare for war, but strive for peace."

Cerebros (セレブロス sereburosu)

Alt. Modes: Communications Room or Head

Spike Witwicky (スパイク・ウィトウィッキー supaiku witowikkī)

Alt. Mode: Head
(Note: Please keep tropes related to Spike on the other characters page.)

Valiant, courageous, a warrior without peer... but peace is his most fervent wish. Fights only out of necessity; believes all violence is ultimately pointless and counterproductive. Transforms to battle station and city modes. Armed with twin laser-guided mortars on legs, heat-seeking dual laser blasters, and fusion-powered photon rifle. Has communications, detection, and repair equipment. Controls two armored vehicles, Gasket and Grommet, which combine to form Cog. Head transforms to semi-autonomous Cerebros, who is binary-bonded to the Nebulan leader, Spike.

  • Arch Enemy: To Scorponok.
  • Actual Pacifist: He'd like to be, at least.
  • Humongous Mecha: The largest toy in the franchise until Generations Metroplex.
  • Losing Your Head: He (they?) are a double Headmaster. Spike transforms into a head for Cerebros, and Cerebros transforms into a head for Fortress Maximus.

Brainstorm (ブレインストーム bureinsutōmu)

Function: Biomechanical Engineer
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Fighter Craft

"The strongest tyrant cannot crush freedom of thought."

Arcana (アルカナ arukana)

Alt. Mode: Head

So full of ideas that he often begins disclosing a new one before he finishes explaining an old one. Worked with the mysterious Nebulan medical doctor, Arcana, to whom he's binary-bonded, to devise new technology that created the Headmasters. In jet mode, maximum speed: 5200mph. Range: 8000 miles. In robot mode, carries high-energy photon pulse cannons. Sometimes overheats and shorts out sections of his cerebro-circuitry.

Chromedome (Chrome (クローム kurōmu))

Function: Computer Programmer
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Sports Car

"A battle plan is only as good as its programmer."

Stylor (スタイラー sutairā)

Alt. Mode: Head

Spent several thousand years cruching numbers at Cybertron's Insitute for Higher Programming before a Decepticon attack reduced it to a pile of smoking microchips. Binary-bonded to Stylor, an egotistical Nebulan more concerned with personal appearance than warfare. In car mode, maximum speed: 478 mph. Range: 630 miles. Hood-mounted infra-red range finder automatically targets roof-mounted dual lasers.

Crosshairs (クロスヘアーズ kurosuheāzu)

Function: Weapons Supervisor
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Off-Rode Vehicle

"Don't shoot until you see the wires in their eyes."

Pinpointer (ピンポインター pinpointā)

Alt. Mode: Double-Barreled Rifle

Meticulous, cautious, some would say overcautious -- won't take a shot unless he's sure he can't miss... won't waste ammo. Pinpointer, his dual rocket-propelled grenade launcher, can lock on target in less than .0003 seconds, but usually trusts Crosshairs to decide when to shoot. In vehicle mode, maximum speed: 160 mph, range: 750 miles; built for traversing rough terrain.

Fastlane (ファーストレーン fāsutorēn) and Cloudraker (クラウドレーカー kuraudorēkā)

Function: Warrior (Fastlane), Sky Fighter (Cloudraker)
Alt. Modes: Futuristic Dragster (Fastlane), Futuristic Jet Fighter (Cloudraker)

Fastlane: "Either you're out of my way or out of luck."
Cloudraker: "Gravity is the chain that binds us all."

Fastlane is a bit immature, sometimes acts like a thrill-seeking show-off, enjoys looking for new ways to get his kicks. Usually makes reckless driving a way of life. In vehicle mode, reaches maximum speed of 220mph; maximum speed with booster jets: 550mph (for no more than 5 seconds). Range: 350 miles. In robot mode, carries 2 sonic boom rifles; one blast can shatter foot-thick steel. Clone brother is Cloudraker.

Cloudraker often acts frustrated, can't reach escape velocity and achieve orbit. Extreme claustrophobe - feels the sky isn't big enough for him. Usually flies as high as he can. Terrified of being on the ground. In vehicle mode, uses 2 gravity-rod rifles to cause objects to float away or crash to the ground. Clone brother is Fastlane.

Hardhead (Ros (ロス rosu))

Function: Ground Assault
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Self-Propelled Artillery Gun

"It's either MY way - or NO way!"

Duros (デュロス djurosu)

Alt. Mode: Head

The only way to get him to follow advice is to persuade him to come up with the idea himself. Stubborn, doesn't talk much. Binary-bonded to Duros, a Nebulan who loves a battle as much as he does. In tank mode, maximum speed: 155 mph. Range: 450 miles. Has 120mm laser-guided gun that shoots incendiary, sonic and explosive shells. In robot mode, has 2 shatterblasters that shoot diamond-hard shards.

Highbrow (ハイブロウ haiburou)

Function: Electronic Warfare
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Twin-Rotor Helicopter

"War is the playground of the ignorant."

Gort (ゴート gōto)

Alt. Mode: Head

To him, warfare is barbaric, worthy of only the most primitive... thinks differences need to be talked about, which he does endlessly. Uses big words no one else understands. A self-righteous snob. Binary-bonded to Gort, a cheerful, courageous young Nebulan. In helicopter mode, maximum speed: 1200mph; equipped with radioactive jammers, target-indicating radar, magnetic, infra-red, and audio sensors. In robot mode, uses 2 corrosive acid rainmaker rifles.

The Monsterbots (Firebot (ファイアーボット faiābotto))

Grotusque (Grotes (グロテス gurotesu))

Function: Military Strategist
Alt. Mode: Bipedal, Winged, Sabre-Toothed Cat-Like Creature

"If it ain't fun to do, it ain't worth doing."

He says that nothing frightens him, except when he looks in the mirror. He thinks that everything is a big joke and acts accordingly, even during battle. Goofy, irreverent, sometimes annoying... but a top-notch warrior. In robot mode, wields a vaporator which gassifies a target's fuel, leaving it inopertive. In creature mode, has indestructible tusks. Flies at 45 mph, can leap 3 miles at a time.

Repugnus (Repug (リパッグ ripaggu))

Function: Counter-Intelligence
Alt. Mode: Bipedal Mantis-Like Insect

"No job is too disgusting to disgust me."

He has a personality as repellent as his looks -- been kicked out of the Autobots many times for insubordination only to be asked back since he's always willing to undertake missions too low-down and dirty for anyone else to consider. In robot mode, carries venom laser that slows cerebro impulses and paralyzes on impact. In creature mode, has infra-red and X-ray vision; can emit colors and stroboscopic effect with eyes. Claws contain chemical, electromagnetic and audio sensors; can rip through almost any substance.

Doublecross (ダブルクロス daburukurosu)

Function: Supply Procurer
Alt. Mode: Twin-Headed Dragon

"Decepticon destruction is my favorite sport... and mine, too."

Can't be depended on -- can't even depend on himself, since he has two minds and they never agree on anything. A deal made with one mind won't necessarily bind the other to act accordingly. Ferocious, savage, hisses when he talks. In creature mode, flies at 80 mph, has razor-sharp teeth. In robot mode, uses rust-ray rifle to corrode enemy robots.

  • Meaningful Name: Repugnus is a worse person than half the Decepticons.
  • Playing with Fire: They can all can breathe it in beast mode.
  • Split Personality: Doublecross.
  • Sssssnaketalk: Doublecross, according to his bio.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Repugnus is the nastiest Autobot to still be portrayed as a hero; only the comic-exclusive Flame, an unrepentant villain, is worse. The only reason the Autobots keep him around is because he's the only one willing to do less-than-ethical missions when they prove necessary.

Pointblank (Blanker (ブランカー burankā))

Function: Enforcer
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Sports Car

"Be brief of speech and long on action."

Peacemaker (Peaceman (ピースマン pīsuman))

Alt. Mode: Sonic Blaster Rifle

He's a somber, no-nonsense sort, weary from millions of years of war on Cybertron. Believes words can do more harm than weapons, so he has few to offer. Understands the reason for the Autobot-Nebulan alliance, but disapproves of it. Peacemaker, his stereo-phonic sonic blaster, is a Nebulan law enforcement official who's always trying, but failing, to persuade Pointblank to be more accommodating.

Punch (Spacepunch (スペースパンチ supēsupanchi))/Counterpunch (カウンターパンチ kauntāpanchi)

Function: Double Agent
Alt. Mode: Pontiac Fiero

"In my business, there are no friends, only suspects."

Punch, the Autobot, transforms into Counter-Punch, the Decepticon, to infiltrate enemy installations. Cool-headed, a robot of few words, reveals little of his true self to either side. Maximum car mode speed: 160 mph. Uses twin mortar launcher in Autobot mode, photon cannon in Decepticon mode.

Sureshot (サーショット sāshotto)

Function: Sharpshooter
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Baja Buggy

"Believing in yourself improves your aim better than target practice."

Spoilsport (Spoil (スポイル supoiru))

Alt. Mode: Twin Laser Cannon

His confidence borders on arrogance -- can hit targets blindfolded, from memory. Resents his twin laser cannon, Spoilsport, since he needs no help from Sureshot to shoot, and never asks for any. Spoilsport likes to shoot and show off on his own. The two only cooperate when their lives depend on it. In vehicle Mode, Sureshot's maximum speed: 290mph, range: 1200 miles.

The Technobots (Techbot (テックボット tekkubotto))

Scattershot (スキャッターショット sukyattāshotto)

Function: Technobot Leader
Alt. Modes: Space Cruisers or Stationary Cannon

"Decepticons are like rust spots - they're ugly and they can pop up anywhere."

A brawling, bragging berserker... he wades into a Decepticon patrol with all barrels blazing, doesn't stop until he's out of ammo. Calls those who disapprove of his methods 'tinplated bucketheads.' Rude, gruff, and direct. In vehicle and battle station Modes, has electron pulse cannon in nosecone; array of sonic, thermal and artillery shell guns. In robot Mode, has 500 rounds-per-minute automatic acid-pellet gun. Combines with fellow Technobots to form Computron.

Lightspeed (ライトスピード raitosupīdo)

Function: Data Processor
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Jet Car

"Space travel is the only flight to freedom."

He longs to be reconstructed into an interstellar spacecraft so he can explore the vast gulfs of space, feels he's a prisoner of gravity in his present form. In jet car mode, goes from 0 to 500mph in 8 seconds. Crusing speed: 300mph. Has twin infra-red scope missile launchers. In robot mode has blinding light-burst gun. Combines with fellow Technobots to form Computron.

Nosecone (ノーズコーン nōzukōn)

Function: Assault Vehicle
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Drill Tank

"It's not who's the fastest; it's who reaches the finish line."

He makes enemy fortifications look like walls of swiss cheese by the time he's finished with them. Slow and methodical - weathers artillery fire with the same calm he endures criticism of his apparent laziness. In vehicle mode, durabyllium - steel alloy drill can pierce almost any material; 2 rocket-propelled missiles use vidicon cameras to lock onto targets. In robot mode, has X-ray laser pistol. Combines with fellow Technobots to form Computron.

Afterburner (アフターバーナー afutābānā)

Function: Gunner
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Motorcycle

"Following leaders leads nowhere."

Quick to anger, even quicker to attack. Defiant, uncooperative, nasty tempered. Hates authority. In vehicle mode, uses solid rocket fuel packs to boost speed to 450 mph. Tires secrete adhesive that enables him to drive up most walls. Carries 2 laser-guided incendiary missiles, rapid-fire plasma pulse cannon. In robot mode, uses semi-automatic sonic blaster pistol. Combines with fellow Technobots to form Computron.

Strafe (ストレイフ sutoreifu)

Function: Aerial Gunner
Alt. Mode: Cybertronian Rocket Plane

"Shoot everywhere - since that's where the enemies are."

He never looks at his targets before he shoots since he never aims -- he just sprays artillery in all directions as soon as he arrives. High-strung, unnerved by quiet, expert marksman. Lightning fast reflexes. In vehicle Mode, maximum ground speed: 250mph; maximum air speed: 580mph. Carries twin automatic light-pulse blasters. In robot Mode, uses heat-ray rifle. Combines with fellow Technobots to form "Computron".

Computron (Computicon (コンピューティコン kompyūtikon))

Function: Warrior

"Complete data analysis is essential for the synthesis of successful strategy."

He always makes the right choice... but takes several minutes to make it, since he first completely analyzes input from the 5 Technobots who comprise him. Has great strength, equipped with data processing, communications, radar equipment. Uses Scattershot's automatic acid-pellet gun. Chooses his words with great care and precision -- when Computron talks, everyone listens.

  • The Five-Man Band who transform into futuristic (for 2006) / Cybertronian vehicles.
    • The Hero / The Big Guy: Scattershot (leader and can transform into a jet and cannon-thing)
    • The Big Guy: Meanwhile, Afterburner has anger management issues and a gun.
    • The Lancer: Afterburner (argues with Scattershot all the time) and Lightspeed (who, considering his personality is the real foil to Scattershot's, and with his tendency to take over ordering the others around when Scattershot isn't there, arguably makes him the better fit as lancer of the team.)
    • The Chick: Lightspeed, but Strafe may also fill this role considering his chronic paranoia and the fact that he's honestly just a really sweet guy underneath it all... at least according to his bio. The show doesn't get that across so much.
    • The Smart Guy: Poor Nosecone (though technically all of them to an extent. Nosecone and Lightspeed just display it more.)
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, look at the stars: Lightspeed
  • Awesomeness By Analysis: Computron. He takes forever to make a move in a fight, but once he does? OHKO all the way, baby. (It's actually getting that hit in before he gets pulverized that's the problem.)
    • Lightspeed pulls this off in the show as well (in "The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1") by taking a split-second to look at the situation and coming up with a plan that he quickly sets in motion through his teammates. And it works.
  • Badass Bookworm: Nosecone
  • Jerkass: Afterburner. He has a Berserk Button that is constantly in some state of pressed.
  • Leeroybot: Strafe Sets It Off. Also Scattershot, going by his toy bio.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Lightspeed is a variation of this. He's a futuristic car who would love nothing more than to be reformatted into a spaceship to explore the universe.
  • Knowledge Is Power: Computron.
    • During the cartoon's third season, Grimlock used his suddenly advanced intelligence (a long story) to build the Technobots out of spare parts found in Unicron's brain. He then transfered his knowledge into the Computron's brain; hence reverting Grimlock back to his old self.

The Throttlebots (スロットルボット surottorubotto)

Goldbug

See Bumblebee

Chase (チェイス cheisu)

Function: Scout
Alt. Mode: Ferrari Testarossa

"Hunters drive; targets park."

Impatient, overeager, usually ten miles down the road before other Throttlebots have shifted into gear. Likes to brag about past exploits and future conquests. Very popular. In car mode, can cruise at 240mph. Excellent vision -- can see long distances in three directions at the same time. Possesses an array of radar dishes positioned under roof in car mode. Prone to drive shaft and transmission problems.

Freeway (Runway (ランウェイ ranwei))

Function: Saboteur
Alt. Mode: Chevrolet Corvette

"Words can cut deeper than steel."

The Throttlebot's self-appointed comedian. Specializes in insulting others, but gets angry when others make fun of him. His car radio intercepts and decodes enemy radio broadcasts, transmits erroneous ones instead. Uses sonic land mines, magnetic homing grenades, rusting agents, etc. for sabotage. At times he laughs so hard at his jokes he blows internal circuits and disables himself.

Searchlight (Looklight (ルックライト rukkuraito))

Function: Surveillance
Alt. Mode: Ford RS200 Rally Car

"Seeing is, by itself, not enough for believing."

A creature of the night. Cruises the Earth with the curiosity of a cat. Nothing is too insignificant or irrelevant to escape his notice. Quiet, serious; a loner. Top row of headlights equipped with stereoscopic digital video cameras, spectroscopic chemical analyzer, and radiation detector. Bottom lights can produce strobe effect, full color spectrum with blinding 10,000 watt brightness.

Rollbar (ロールバー rōrubā)

Function: Tracker
Alt. Mode: Jeep CJ-7

"When the going gets tough, the tough get driving!"

Impulsive, loves to take chances, put his life on the line. Speaks in corny, macho cliches, which unintentionally elicits laughter from the other Throttlebots. Extremely agile in jeep Mode; can go into flips and rolls with very little loss in speed. Has built-in chemical sensors, radiation detectors, audio and video recorders to assist his tracking.

Wideload (ワイドロード waidorōdo)

Function: Materials Transport
Alt. Mode: "Earth-Mover" Dump Truck

"Look good and you'll have the world in your pocket."

Usually he's so dirty you'd think he sweated grease, but he's a neatness fanatic. Vain and superficial -- judges others on appearances. Uses spare time to work on his polish. Can haul up to 1,000,000 pounds. Uses hands and tires' sensors to find new sources of raw materials. Unusually susceptible to rust, an embarrassment given his pride in his appearance.

  • Expy: They replaced the Mini-Vehicles in the toy line.
    • Chase is one of Cliffjumper.
  • Composite Character: Rollbar has many characteristics of both Brawn and Trailbreaker.
  • Motor Mouth: Chase.
  • Jerkass: Freeway thinks he's a comedian. The others... don't.
  • Sixth Ranger: Goldbug. Sometimes he isn't even acknowledged as part of the team.
  • The Quiet One: Searchlight.
  • Watch the Paint Job: For a dump truck, Wide Load is very particular about his appearance.
