Tomb Raider/Characters
A list of characters and tropes from the Tomb Raider series.
Protagonist: Lara Croft
A Continuity Reboot and frequent Darrin swapping have led to four radically different personalities for Lara Croft. Here are the tropes that each Lara generally possesses:
- Action Girl
- Anti-Hero: Type III
- Badass
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished (although this doesn't mean Lara is free of some nasty mishaps)
- The upcoming reboot seems to be averting this.
- Averted in Underworld.
- Bond One-Liner: Lara tends to quip with witty remarks after killing a major enemy.
- Deadpan Snarker: Lara can't resist making a sarcastic remark when it comes up.
- Gainaxing
- Hot Amazon
- Ms. Fanservice
- Stripperiffic
- Throw It In: Lara's breast size came about when someone made a slip of the mouse when adjusting some vertices. The rest is history.
- Tomboyish Ponytail
And here are the tropes each of Lara's iterations feature:
First Lara (Tomb Raider 1)
Second Lara (Tomb Raider 2, 3)
- Deadpan Snarker
- Bond One-Liner
- British Series: She casually makes references to Jackanory and Detox.
- British Stuffiness
- Heroic Mime: She doesn't speak a word for the second half of TR2, until the very end.
- Buffy-Speak: "Your perception of good timing is... BAD!"
- Welcome to Corneria: "Aha!"
Third Lara (Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Chronicles, Angel of Darkness)
- Anti-Hero
- Back from the Dead
- Cool Shades
- Clear My Name
- Cycle of Revenge (Von Croy tries to kill Lara for leaving him in Cambodia. Then she tries to kill him for leaving her in Egypt.)
- Darker and Edgier
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Large Ham: "You unsavory little runt!"
- No Indoor Voice
- Took a Level in Badass
Fourth Lara - first Continuity Reboot (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld)
- Bare Your Midriff: default outfit in Legend.
- Beware the Nice Ones
- Bond One-Liner
- Bunny Ears Lawyer
- Chewing the Scenery: "WHERE! IS! MY! MOTHER!"
- It Gets Easier: They make a big deal of her killing people in Anniversary, but in Legends and Underworld she murders hundreds of people and doesn't remark on it at all.
- My God, What Have I Done?
- Out, Damned Spot!
- Took a Level in Badass (seems to be the case in Underworld)
- You Killed My Father
Other Heroes
Werner Von Croy
- Cycle of Revenge (Von Croy tries to kill Lara for leaving him in Cambodia. Then she tries to kill him for leaving her in Egypt.)
- Jerkass
- Left for Dead: Lara was reluctantly forced to leave him behind in a cave-in. Years later, it turned out he survived, albeit with a permanent leg injury.
- Mentors
- Poirot Speak, ja?
Kurtis Trent
Zip and Alister
Villains
Natla
- Back from the Dead
- Femme Fatalons
- For Science! (Original Tomb Raider only)
- Not So Different: She attempts to pull this on Lara in the final boss fight, but to no avail (TRA Only)
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old
- Rich Bitch
- Sealed Evil in a Can
- We Can Rule Together (TRA Only)
- Immortality
Larson Conway
- Affably Evil: The Anniversary remake paints him as this. He won't go out of his way to hurt or kill Lara unless he has no choice as shown in the quick time events. He even speaks to Lara as if they were friends. In one scene, he even shoves one of his own allies out of the way and then misses his shot when Lara was escaping, practically saving her life.
- The Ditz: In the original continuity only.
- Mr. Fanservice
- Even the Guys Want Him: (Hell, MOSTLY the guys want him!)
- Does This Remind You of Anything? (Him and Lara end up lying on top of each other in TRA)
- Groin Attack: Lara does this to him in Chronicles when he gets a bit too enthusiastic "searching" her.
- Made of Iron: In his first gun fight with Lara, he winds up with gunshot wounds to his right arm and left leg, but you wouldn't know it with the way he was threatening to shove the Scion up her wazoo. And in TRA, he takes several gunshots to the chest before giving up the ghost.
- Those Two Bad Guys: Him and Pierre.
- Took a Level In Dumbass: In Chronicles, he is a lot dumber that he was in his original appearance. This is also a somewhat confusing case, seeing as this segment of Chronicles takes place before the first game.
Pierre Dupont
- Bald of Evil: (TRA only)
- Beard of Evil
- Made of Iron
- Only Sane Man: When compared with Larson, definitely.
Doppelganger
- Doppelganger, though that one's pretty much self-explanatory. It mostly resembles the Evil Knockoff variety, though it's not entirely clear if it was ever specifically commanded to kill Lara.
- Evil Twin.
- The Voiceless.
Amanda Evert
- Blondes Are Evil
- Perky Goth
- Start of Darkness: Forming a bond with some ancient entity and being abandoned by her best friend may have made her a little sour
- Villains Want Mercy: Averted hard. Even while staring down the barrel of Lara's gun and being completely at her mercy in Legend, she's still insulting her.
