Dr. Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell)

  • The Alcoholic
  • Alternative Character Interpretation / Retcon: The creators of First Contact freely admit they took liberties with the character as he was originally depicted back in TOS' "Metamorphosis," their justification being that we're seeing him at a different point in his life.
  • Broken Pedestal
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Cochrane is one of the brightest minds of his time. He's also a heavy drinker who thinks first contact is best celebrated with whiskey and dancing.
  • Cassandra Truth
  • Fridge Brilliance: "Metamorphosis" features some '60s Values Dissonance with him hitting on Nancy Hedford in a rather sexist way, but First Contact's portrayal of him as a womanizer makes this in-character. He also originally only mentions his last name, giving his first name when Kirk asks for it in a later scene. Considering how he feels about being a hero in First Contact, he would put off mentioning that he is the great Zefram Cochrane for as long as possible. You could also read his reaction to meeting Spock ("You're a Vulcan, aren't you?", "Correct.") as a deliberately low-key one designed to downplay him being the guy who made first contact with the Vulcans.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: A Deconstructed Trope which occurs In-Universe.
  • I Choose to Stay: At the end of "Metamorphosis". Given his negative feelings about being admired in First Contact, Kirk's line that "there's a whole galaxy out there waiting to honor you" is now Hilarious in Hindsight.
  • Ladykiller in Love: If you regard the ending of "Metamorphosis" through the filter of his characterization in First Contact, he's a womanizer finally settling down.
  • The Other Darrin: Glenn Corbett played him in "Metamorphosis."
  • Screw Destiny: Tries to do so after Geordi describes how famous he is in the future. ("You told him about the statue?")
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: In "Metamorphosis," he's discovered as a 237-year-old man trapped on a planet where he's become a de-aged immortal. He says that "immortality consists largely of boredom."
