Soul Chess/YMMV

  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: Word of God intended to induce this when giving Tatsuki a bigger role in the story. The jury's out on whether or not it will become a ship.
  • Archive Binge: Good luck getting caught up very easily considering how the series is a Doorstopper
  • Non Sequitur Scene: Chapter 58 seems like this, but the trope is subverted by Word of God who claims he has left several Chekhov's Gun in the chapter for later.
  • Ear Worm: Shuren’s incantation: Fire burn and fire roar, total destruction from mountain to shore. Does not help that it sounds very similar to the line Gargamel spouts in the opening sequence.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Vera, much to the author's own surprise.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: The author keeps a poll on his profile regarding this. Lelouch/CC and Lelouch/Nemu are currently the frontrunners which the latter has a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Fridge Brilliance: All of the matchups in the second battle of Karakura Town, which were set up by Lelouch are a case of this when the method to his madness is revealed.
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment: In chapter 31, Rukia draws her and Hisana attacking Byakuya. Come chapter 34, this becomes decidedly less amusing. It also came back to bite Byakuya during Lelouch's trial.
    • In chapter 78, Kendra says, as Komamura passes out, that the gang is going to be fine and that he can rest. Cue Hisagi dying.
    • In the omake of chapter 71, Tatsuki uses Shoryuken to defeat Jason. In chapter 80 her alternate persona slash sort of kind of Zanpakuto spirit, but not really Kaibun uses the move against Uryu
  • Harsher in Hindsight: There was speculation, but now that we know the reason, the hollow embryo that Lelouch removed from Nemu in chapter 27 is even more horrifying.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Keigo wants to go play with a fribee in chapter 52. Later in the chapter? Catch it. Catch it with your teeth.
  • Ho Yay: Byakuya can be very dedicated to Lelouch. However, Word of God says that this will never be canon.
    • Talbumosuke, likewise, can be extremely loyal to Aizen.
    • Byakuya has finally gotten over his hero worship, although he still holds extreme respect for Lelouch.
    • Tatsuki mentions that if Keigo was a different kind of guy...
    • Tensa Zangetsu’s Undying Loyalty to Ichigo comes across as this if you read too much into it.
    • Ichigo telling Lelouch to look him in the eye raises quite a few eyebrows.
  • It Was His Sled: Parts of the Prelude to the Final Game arc, Eye of the Storm arc, Visored arc and Reapers and Heralds arc that are the same as canon are skipped over. Word of God also writes on the basis that all readers have seen the ins and outs of ["Bleach"]. On the bright side very rarely can the author be accused of not doing his research
  • Mary Sue: One could argue a case of this for Rita Ginunga
  • Moral Event Horizon: Tsukishima crossed it for every Yoru Soi fan when he Made Soifon completely forget about Yoruichi
  • Never Live It Down: Ginrei still remembers an extremely sick joke that Lelouch once told.
    • Tatsuki mentions that Ichigo once yelled at a trash can. There was a whole on top of it, but no one can see those.
    • Renji is sure that Rukia will turn the reason he survived Yammy into this.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Unohana’s Bankai
    • Don’t break the rules of Shunsui’s Bankai. The end result is not pretty.
  • Possession Sue: One could argue a case of this for Captain of Squad 10 Lelouch Lamperouge
  • What an Idiot!: Lelouch's propencity for gloating can get him into trouble, just like in his previous life.
    • It's actually worse than his previous life because it makes him look sadistic.
    • Kaien attacks Ichigo on Aizens advice. He knows that Aizen is the Big Bad, and he still listens to him.
    • Subverted when Lelouch fights Aizen head on, by himself. It was all part of his plan.
    • Shawlong. He monologues and passes vital information to Uryu.
    • Did Needles really think he was going to get away with attempting to rape Orihime or convince Ichigo to join in on the action. And then trying to spinelessly back out of it? The man is lucky Ichigo left him breathing.
