Shock Site/Playing With
- Basic Trope: A website, usually containing a picture or video, whose entire purpose is to shock and offend.
- Played Straight: The website contains a picture or video of an old, obese couple having sex.
- Exaggerated: The picture includes some really hardcore Gorn, as well as the above- mentioned Fan Disservice.
- Alternatively, the site is so horrible that viewers become blind, deaf, and commit suicide so that they can forget what they saw on that site.
- The site is a Brown Note that turns anyone who sees it into stone, or makes them rave and foam at the mouth.
- Alternatively, the site is so horrible that viewers become blind, deaf, and commit suicide so that they can forget what they saw on that site.
- Downplayed: The site contains pictures of animal feces, expired food, paper cuts...
- Justified: Trolly McLulz wants to make a point against a certain group, and decides to humiliate and shock them using such sites.
- Inverted: The picture on the website is that of an adorable baby with a litter of kittens. Nothing bad, and you'll probably want to save this picture.
- Subverted: The picture on the website is a famous celebrity.
- The puctre/video is not pornographic, violent, scatological, or otherwise filled with offensive content.
- Rather than Squick, the site exists to give a quick Mind Screw.
- Double Subverted: But then the innocuous picture/video switches over to an old, obese couple having Head-Tiltingly Kinky sex.
- While the picture or video is technically safe for work, there is a lot of heavily implied Squickyness, horrible sounds from just offscreen, and just enough room for the viewer to assume worse than anything that could be put on camera.
- A non-traditional shock site relies not on sickening those who see it, but on disturbing them via a fast and brutal Mind Screw, but is just different means to the same end: confusion, disgust, and shock.
- Deconstructed: These websites tend to be High Octane Nightmare Fuel and Fan Disservice for most people, featuring a lot of illegal content. As a result, site owners find themselves getting prosecuted at an alarming rate, which leads to many of these sites getting shut down.
- Reconstructed: The websites begin to operate in countries where shock sites are protected by law, allowing them to continue to provide lulz for Trolls and Squick for everyone else.
- Parodied: A picture of a Lolcat is treated as one of these. Alternately, the reactions of those unsuspecting fools who see the site for the first time.
- The website with shown in Comic Sans font.
- Lampshaded: "WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE WASTE THEIR TIME CREATING SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?!?!"
- Averted: The website contains nothing that even the most hardcore Media Watchdog or Moral Guardians would object to, and nothing that even the guy/girl with the weakest stomach would find Squicky.
- Enforced: "Hey, you know what would get this website a lot of hits? Brazilian scat porn!"
- Invoked: Someone creates a Shock Site hoping it'll become an internet sensation.
- Defied: Site owners deliberately remove any and all adult content from their webpages.
- Discussed: "So, have you heard about [insert URL here]?"
- Conversed: "Yeah. It's disgusting. Can we talk about something else?"
- Played For Laughs: Almost always is.
- Played For Drama: The picture/video in question is of a little girl's corpse being raped by several men. Needless to say, the FBI is unamused.
- Plotted A Perfectly Good Waste: The site does contain pictures of old, obese couples having sex, but only because it's either 1) a porn site catering to that particular fetish and/or 2) produced by the couple in said photo.
- Wasted A Perfectly Good Plot: A truly terrifying picture is created, full of nightmarish symbolism and complex Fridge Horror, with a deep, engaging creepypasta story behind it. Everyone just uses it as a shock site.
