Persona 4/Awesome
Video Game
- Yukiko telling off those reporters near the end of her Social Link series. It was real nice to see her have a backbone to something like this.
- In the True Ending, the Main Character, rather pissed off at the boss and suitably powered up by the events right before the fight, takes off his glasses, throws them away, summons his persona, and blasts the everliving hell out of the boss.
- And that was his response to Izanami hammering him with an insanely powerful spell several times in a row. Which had no effect whatsoever.
- Did we forget to mention Izanami is the co-creator of the universe and deity of death in Japanese mythology? Terribly sorry if that's the case.
- The glasses weren't an evoker of any kind, and had nothing to do with summoning Personas. The glasses let them see through the fog, and him throwing them away symbolized that he didn't need them anymore, because he'd discovered the final truth (also, the ability you're using at the time is called "Myriad Truths"). Still CMOA, but for entirely different reasons.
- It's implied the glasses also protect the wearer from the health effects of the fog. In other words, he doesn't fear death, even the goddess of it herself. Especially since since he was on its brink minutes earlier.
- And on top of all that, he earns a perfectly happy ending. In a SMT game.
- The Endurance Run of Giant Bomb manages to make this scene more awesome/hilarious by singing "Smooth Criminal" during said scene.
- I'd like to add a personal, player created CMOA to this scene: my roommate was listening to The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" in his room during this boss fight and, just when it came time to cast Myriad Truths, the drumbeats began playing, syncing up with the Protagonist casting aside his glasses, and culminated with Roger Daltrey screaming "YYYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!" at the exact moment the spell was cast. Pardon my language, but it was pretty fucking awesome.
- Dear sweet Jesus H. Christ on a Pogo Stick, I must try this. Why is my PlayStation 2 10,000 miles away?!!
- Sounds like he . . . *sunglasses* . . . showed her Who was boss
- And that was his response to Izanami hammering him with an insanely powerful spell several times in a row. Which had no effect whatsoever.
- Kanji has his CMOA prior to the game, in this troper's opinion. Everybody thinks he's caught up with a local teenage biker gang, but as he keeps trying to explain, what really happened is that he beat the shit out of the whole gang. Why? They were keeping his mother from sleeping at night with all the noise and racket they made.
- And to rub salt in the wound, he did it all with a shield he bought from Daidara's Metalworks. No, really. Ask Daidara during Kanji's disappearance.
- Speaking of Kanji...he doesn't get his Persona just by coming to terms with his Shadow. He gets it by punching it out and then coming to terms with it.
"C'mon... get up. Anyone who looks like me, I know they ain't so weak that they can't take a punch."
- Yosuke's response to the true killer's Hannibal Lecture:
"'Favored by the world' my ass... I'm going to say it flat out. You're just a worthless criminal!"
- In Chie's Level 9 S-Link, even though they were threatening the safety of her best friend, she stops a group of street punks from mugging a kid by daring them to punch her. Badass.
- Everytime Chie does her Galactic Punt follow up attack, a one-shot kill that also doubles as a Crowning Moment of Funny.
- Eight words: "Take a good look... at Teddie's last stand!"
- Another one for Teddie: When after realizing his true nature, he decides to get over that fact for Nanako, overcoming the feeling of failure and monstrousness that he had fallen into, and thus, awakening to his Persona's real power.
Teddie: So what if I am just a Shadow? There must still be something I can do!
- Naoto's cunning plan to solve the case. Having realised that Mitsuo only killed Morooka, she appeared on TV solely in order to be kidnapped, and therefore possibly find out more information about the true culprit. And, having realised that the Investigation Team were the ones responsible for saving the lives of the last few victims, she has a conversation with them first hinting at her strategy, because she knew that they would feel that they had to rescue her if she was in danger. Bonus points for responding to her rescue like it's just another day at the office.
- Even aside from this, Naoto deserves kudos for proving that the title of "Detective Prince" is far from being just PR. Without the advantage of knowing the Midnight Channel to be real thing, or any of the TV world intel that the team has via Teddie and Rise, she figures out on her own that people who have recently appeared on TV are at risk - and catches on to it soon enough to correctly identify first Kanji and then Rise as likely victims. And following Kanji and Rise's cases, she correctly concludes not only that their disappearances, and Yukiko's, were indeed connected to the murders, but that the Investigation Team had been rescuing and recruiting abductees. To top it off, she's the only person to have more than a vague, nebulous suspicion that Morooka's murder is a copycat case, despite again not having any more information than the police and no TV world information to go by.
- In one of Yukiko's later S-link scenes, she is getting harassed by a sleazy TV producer and his crew, who wanted to take advantage of her family inn's worsening financial status by pressuring her into agreeing to make a tabloid-style show about the inn. Her response to the TV crew? She snaps and puts them back in their place, making them stand down and leave promptly, proving that you should Beware the Nice Ones indeed.
- Made even better when how Yukiko's S. Link is about gaining confidence and preparing to leave Inaba, then she realizes the inn and everyone in it is what matters most to her and she stands up for them.
- Not to leave out what probably is the greatest of them all: "Children of man... well done!"
- Who's the toughest girl in Persona4? Rise Kujikawa. Why? When every other character awakened their persona, the were sick in bed for weeks afterwards (even Kanji). When Rise Kujikawa awakened her persona not only is it canonically all-but-invincible, when it's defeated in a cutscene, and the real boss awakens, she gets up immediately, still wounded, summons it, and saves your ass. Did we mention she does all this without the keep-your-mind-from-imploding glasses that help you see through the fog? When her job is to enemy scan?
- Naoto's critical hit certainly counts. Strolling up to the enemy while shooting them three times before rearing back and planting her foot in the enemy's ass. There are quite a few awesome critical hits in the game, but Naoto's takes the cake simply because of how casual she is about it.
- Kanji snapping everyone out of a Heroic BSOD after Nanako's hospitalization.
- The MC gets a notable one. The rest of the group are contemplating throwing Nametame into the TV for Nanako's "death." After trying to defuse the situation and convince them that they don't have the whole story, the MC finally loses his temper and shouts, "Calm the hell down!" And, of course, it works.
Yosuke: "Geez... How the hell can you stay so calm, man? Then again, that's why you're our leader..."
- So we're just going to ignore Teddie saving the party from Shadow Rise, by essentially going Super Saiyan and finishing her off with one blow? REALLY?
The Anime of the Game
- First episode: Yu summons Izanagi for the first time, which he uses to absolutely rip apart the shadows as he unbuttons his previously buttoned up uniform.
- In episode 2, Yu punches Yosuke at this point to snap him out of his Heroic BSOD.
- Episode 3: Things look grim during the fight against Shadow Chie... until Yu breaks out the Wild Card ability and summons PYRO JACK. Needless to say, ass-kicking ensues.
- This is also the episode when Yosuke summons Jiraiya for the first time and begins to show his Badass side, mowing down shadows alongside Yu as they try to catch up to Chie.
- Probably the best part is when Yu and Yosuke finish off Shadow Chie with a team-attack.
- Episode 4: The Shadow Yukiko fight. That is all.
- Chie snapping Yukiko out of her Heroic BSOD in the middle of the room, which is engulfed in flame. THAT is all.
- YMMV on Episode 5: Even as a Breather Episode, Yu Narukami still gets one when he clears two Social Links in April! Something that should not even be possible in gameplay, he pulls it off in the anime with no sweat! The end of the episode just confirms it when he is holding two Persona cards (Moon and Strength).
- Not to mention that one of the two he completes is completely infuriating.
- As if that wasn't awesome enough, during the summer vacation, Yu clears no less than five Social Links - specifically Hermit, Tower, Death, Temperance and Devil. Why? So he can get enough money to buy Nanako a new umbrella after she gave her old one to the fox.
- Episode 6: Best. Ramen. Delivery. Ever! Aiya Ramen truly deserves a Crowning Moment of Awesomely Funny nomination for that one.
- You know how they MENTIONED Kanji confronting a biker gang? Well in the anime, they show him doing it, and he confronts them, MARVELOUSLY!
- Episode 7: Kanji punching out his Shadow self was awesome in the video game. Here? He punches his BERSERKED Shadow self!
- "I LOVE CUTE SHIT!"
- Narukami fusing his personas in the middle of the battle was pretty epic too. Oh and he summons Yamata-no-Orochi.
- Episode 10: Kanji summons his Persona for the first time (By freaking UPPERCUTTING the card); it proceeds to bulldoze through the Mooks Shadow Rise left behind(before this, the others weren't hitting, due to elemental properities blocking the attacks.)
- Teddie going boom to beat Shadow Rise..by WALKING THROUGH her BFG. Prior to that we see Shadow Rise's attempt at scanning him. One of the boxes translates as "Isn't this kinda bad?" since she can't get a reading.
- Rise also summons her Persona for the first time, using her analyzing feature to allow Izanagi to ONESHOT Shadow Teddie. That's right, this hard boss in the game just got beat with ONE blow.
- Episode 11: Yu saves Nanako from an angry customer who turns out to be Mitsuo, King Moron's murderer. Then it quickly turns into a CMOF after Yu remembers why he was at Junes in the first place.
- Also, Kanji and Chie immediately jumping to Yukiko's defense when she's harrassed by Mitsuo, the same dude that harrassed Nanako.
- Episode 12: The Shadow Mitsuo battle. Every second of it, from Yu's friends stopping him from forming his shell, to Yu summoning Makami, King Frost, High Pixie, Pyro Jack, Yamato-no-Orochi, Leanan Sidhe, Rakshasa and Ara Mitama in rapid succession to ward off Shadow Mitsuo's attacks, before finishing him off with Izanagi. All of it set to the Reincarnation version of I'll Face Myself.
- Especially the line he delivers right before launching his attack: "I am not empty!" (In response to the Shadow telling him that he was empty, had no bonds, and that his friendships were an illusion.)
- Even more awesome when you realize that each of the Personae that are being used are from a different Social Link arcana that Yu's established. He's using the bonds that the Shadow claimed he didn't have to beat him down!
- It also rather nicely emphasizes Yu's Wild Card ability. Prior to this, most of the battles only features Yu using a few Personae at a time, and often only Izanagi. Seeing the full power of the Wild Card is very impressive.
- Episode 14: Yu vs. the Guardian of the Samegawa. In the game, this is an incredibly annoying task which will take multiple days. In the anime, Yu spends the day trying to catch it before deciding to pull out his glasses, dramatically throw them on, and drag the fish out while Reach Out to the Truth plays in the background. The only question remaining being why was this not possible in the game?
- Plus, he apparently summons Izanagi (he's seen summoning, but the Persona summoned is not shown) to blast the fish out of the water. Yes, he summoned a Persona outside of the TV world.
- Actually, it would seem more like (and this is supported by the Amagi Inn episode where he does it again) he just shouts "Persona!" as a battle cry to psych himself up. Which means he pulled that fish out entirely on his own.
- Episode 17: Yu once again fuses mid battle, this time with SIX different arcana, allowing him to summon Beelzebub of the Devil Arcana at level 87, which promptly begins to utterly destroy Naoto's shadow with the almighty spell Megidolaon.
- It didn't just destroy Shadow Naoto, it demolished the whole fucking dungeon!
- In addition, Kanji going full on Determinator, continuing to fight against Naoto's Shadow despite getting repeatedly blown back.
- Teddie gets a minor one when he uses "Energy Shower", rejuvenating himself, Yu, and Youske and effectively turning the tide of the battle
- Rise's powers got shown off that episode too, showing that support is pretty handy. She was even able to tell what attack Naoto's shadow was going to use next!
- Episode 20: Yukiko basically telling the reporters to "get the hell out of her inn" was pretty badass considering how she usually acts.
- Episode 21: Rise and Teddie get theirs when they do their best to calm Yuu down after he goes in an Heroic BSOD. Consider that this happened not just after Nanako was kidnapped and thrown into the Midnight Channel, but after finding the kidnapper's truck, but neither Nanako nor the culprit are there -- and Doujima has been seriously injured. The fact that both of them managed to pull this despair how it's getting worse and worse, it talks a lot about their wills.
- Episode 22: Many in rapid sucession that also double as Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.
- First, Kunino-Sagiri takes control of Yu, which obviously causes a few problems. But not only are the rest of the Investigation Team able to stop Beelzebub from unleashing Megidoloan, but after seeing Nanako fall, Yu grabs the Mind Control Device and breaks it with the hand (Badly burning his own hand in the process) wearing Nanako's ring, just in time to catch her.
- So what does Kunino-Sagiri do next? Control everyone else. Solution? Fuse the ultimate Hierophant Persona, Kohryu (bonus points for Kunino-Sagiri actually recognising Kohryu, sounding afraid) with the help of the spirit of Dojima to debuff everyone, allowing them to take credit for once for destroying the boss. With the mostly pretty weak Teddie being the one that delivers the Coup De Grace
- Finally, Kunio-Sagiri's defeat unleashes a vortex of many shadows. The bond with Nanako allows Yu to summon the ultimate Justice Persona, Sraosha. Two Words. Dat Mahamaon.
- More like Mahamaowned...Why do I feel sick?
- Episode 24:
- The Investigation Team holding off three Reapers, while Yu preapres to duel the true killer one-on-one.
- Kanji's persona Tackles one of the Reapers
- Yukiko: "Burn to Death!"
- A villainous example, too: Adachi was regarded as something of a pushover in his boss fight from the game. Here, he is controlling three Reapers!
- Yu keeping his cool though the killer's Hannibal Lecture, then delivering a short but effective response.
- The Investigation Team holding off three Reapers, while Yu preapres to duel the true killer one-on-one.
Yu: You're pathetic.
- Yosuke manages to pull off a surprisingly good Death Glare alongside Yu when they confront Adachi in the hospital.
- Episode 25 is amazing. Everyone gets their own moment in an epic Shut UP, Hannibal to the true killer.
- Chie takes out one of the Reapers by smashing it with God Hand.
- Teddie destroys another Reaper.
- tink* BOOM!
- Which comes right on the tail of Yosuke delivering his epic "You're just a worthless criminal!" line, this time accompanied by a massive Garudyne attack. Badass.
- Izanagi vs. Magatsu Izanagi. After spending the episode getting beaten down by its dark counterpart, and lying restrained on the floor... Adachi's about to finish Yu off, but our hero manages to struggle to his feet and shove Adachi's gun away... the Heroic Resolve gives Izanagi a second wind, instantly healing his wounds as he turns the tables. He punches Magatsu in the face, and Adachi finally snaps and loses it. He thinks he's blow Yu up, but Izanagi comes out of the smoke just as "Reach Out to the Truth" starts to play. In the ensuing clash, Magatsu loses its weapon, then Izanagi dual wields it with his own and beats down his opposite number, finishing it by stabbing Magatsu Izanagi through the head.
- before the stab to the face, Izanagi uses Magatsu's own sword to slice it in half!
- Shove the gun away? Yu was daring Adachi to shoot him.
- And, of course, the defeat of Ameno-Sagiri is a sight to behold. After it wipes the floor with everyone, it tries absorbing Yu into itself... at which point, everyone (except Yu, of course) attains their ultimate Persona, and bring Ameno-Sagiri to a halt... at which point, Yu summons Lucifer to finish it off.
- The fact that the series will continue to the true ending, complete with the fight with Margaret, is one. These last few episodes will appear on the DVD box set.
- ↑ That link should skip to it; go to about 3:22 if it doesn't.
