Black Butler II/Characters
Phantomhive Manor
Ciel Phantomhive
Voiced by Maaya Sakamoto (JP) and Brina Palencia (ENG)
- Anti-Hero
- Astral Checkerboard Decor: In his mental world.
- Barehanded Blade Block: Against Alois.
- Boy in a Box: He starts the story as an empty shell in Sebastian's suitcase.
- Dark and Troubled Past: It is a matter of fan contention whether his or Alois's past is more dark and troubled.
- Deal with the Devil: With Sebastian.
- Dude in Distress
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness
- Easy Amnesia: Ciel turning out to have amnesia about the previous season is one of the main drivers of the plot for this season.
- Evil Eye: His right eye contains Sebastian's mark, the proof of the contract between them.
- Eyepatch of Power
- Hates Being Touched
- Kuudere
- Smart People Play Chess
- Stoic Woobie
Sebastian Michaelis
Voiced by Daisuke Ono (JP) and J Michael Tatum (ENG)
- Battle Butler
- Bishounen
- Catch Phrase: In the dub, "I am one Hell of a butler."
- Cuteness Proximity: Get him close to his beloved cats, and he'll even ignore Ciel.
- Fangs Are Evil: His demon form has sharp teeth and small fangs.
- Fork Fencing
- Genius Bruiser
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: In his demon mode.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Red Right Hand: His fingernails are black even when he suppresses his other visible demon traits.
- Super Reflexes
- Super Strength
- Villain Protagonist: He used to be more of a dark Anti-Hero in the previous season, but he is more villainous here.
Trancy Manor
Alois Trancy
Voiced by Nana Mizuki (JP) and Luci Christian (ENG)
"They should all die! All of them! Everything, completely annihilated!"
A rather disturbed and unstable boy who made a contract the the demon Claude. Alois is clingy and emotional and in general Ciel's total opposite.
- Animal Motifs: Apparently the Trancy clan has been long associated with spiders, and Alois himself has had quite a few What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic scenes with spiders and webs. His contract mark even looks a bit like a spiderweb.
- Bodyguard Betrayal: He ends up murdered by Claude.
- Creepy Child: Much more so than Ciel.
- Cute and Psycho: Alois. Throughout the first episode he flips from sweet and innocent to Ax Crazy so many times it could make someone dizzy.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His backstory contains life as a poor orphan, the death of his beloved little brother, and sex slavery. Then he met Claude.
- Dead Little Sister: Brother, actually, and the driving force behind Alois' autophobia.
- Deal with the Devil: With Claude.
- And again with Hannah.
- Desperately Craves Affection
- Dying Alone: Even more of a Tear Jerker due to the fact that it was Claude, the only person he seemed to care about, who killed him.
- Foil: For Ciel.
- Forgiveness: It's implied that he was able to forgive Claude that the latter killed him, as Hannah mentioned that she, Claude, Alois and Luca can all be together in nirvana.
- I Just Want to Be Loved: An evil variation.
- Kick the Dog: One of the first things in the anime that Alois does is Eye Scream Talk about bad first impressions.
- Leitmotif: The Slightly Chipped Full Moon and its variations.
- No Sense of Personal Space
- Nouveau Riche: He flaunts his money and doesn't rally seem to care, as seen by the first episode when he tosses bills and bills of money down to his "uncle".
- Please Don't Leave Me: Performed on Claude. Claude still killed him.
- Rags to Riches: His backstory.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Claude's Blue Oni. Can also be considered the Red Oni to Ciel's Blue Oni.
- Sex Slave: Used to be one to the late Earl Trancy.
- Together in Death: He, Luca, Claude, and Hannah. Somehow.
- Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: For the whole first episode, he goes from acting completely innocent to downright crazy within a few seconds, and switches back and forth between the two personas. Not to mention how he acts as if he is trying to seduce any male character within five feet of him. Which is, sadly, Truth in Television. Many childhood sexual abuse victims end up acting like this, because their trauma never allowed them to develop healthy ways of interacting with adults.
- Who Wears Short Shorts?: His "Booty Shorts" have pretty much reached memetic status by now.
- Yandere: He appears to be that for Claude. Much of what Alois does can be attributed to him trying to impress Claude.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A.
Claude Faustus
Voiced by Takahiro Sakurai (JP) and Jason Douglas (ENG)
"Passion to calm, hesitation to resolve, love to gravestones. That is the Trancy butler."
The demon who made a contract with Alois and became his butler. Claude is for the most part cold and uncaring, but he does have a hidden passionate side. He appears to be even more evil than Sebastian, with whom Claude develops a rivalry.
- Absurdly Sharp Blade Claude's knives are as sharp as Sebastian's.
- Animal Motifs: Claude is connected to spiders.
- Battle Butler
- Bodyguard Betrayal: He gets bored of Alois and murders him. Too bad for Alois that their contract didn't include a clause against that kind of thing.
- Cheshire Cat Grin
- Eyes of Gold
- Though sometimes they glow red.
- Fangs Are Evil: He grows sharp teeth and fangs in his demon mode.
- Foil: For Sebastian.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: When he lets his demonic side closer to the surface.
- The Glasses Come Off
- Gratuitous English: "Yes, your highness."
- Hellish Pupils: Occasionally.
- Knife Nut: Like Sebastian, Claude fights with cutlery - but instead of mere silverware, he uses goldware.
- Meaningful Name: Claude Faustus.
- Razor Floss: One of his attacks.
- Real Men Wear Pink: He's got a real talent for crocheting.
- Stoic Spectacles
- Super Reflexes
- Super Strength
- The Un-Smile: He smiles at the beginning of episode 8, shocking and disgusting Alois.
- Yandere: He becomes one for Ciel after getting to taste his blood.
Hannah Anafellows
Voiced by Aya Hirano (JP) and Caitlin Glass (ENG)
- Absolute Cleavage
- Ambiguously Brown
- Barehanded Blade Block: Against a freaking chainsaw, no less. Justified by the fact that she's a demon.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: one of the two reasons she becomes attached to Luka. Hannah notes that he was genuinely excited that she appeared to him to grant his wish and that, upon his death, he was the first soul to have ever expressed gratitude towards her for granting their wish.
- Benevolent Boss: It is revealed that the triplets actually serve Hannah. When we see them groom her and assist her burning down Luka's and Alois' village in a flashback. In "Spider's Intentions", she is shown treating them gently, placing flowers in their hair, with the triplets seeming quite fond of her preferring her over Claude.
- Body Horror: In episode 10, she opens her mouth disgustingly wide to give Ciel a look at Alois' eye that she stole, which stares back at him from seemingly an abyss inside her.
- Clothing Damage: A lot.
- Dark-Skinned Blond
- Healing Factor: She grows back her destroyed eye.
- Love Martyr: It pays off in the end though.
- Meido
- Ms. Fanservice: Although to some, with the amount of disturbing things that she becomes involved with, it could be Fan Disservice.
- Ninja Maid: Comes with the territory as a demon maid.
- The Reveal: Hannah was the one who made the contract that took Luca's soul, and she came to serve him alongside Claude because she and Luca both wanted to be near Alois.
- Treasure Chest Cavity: She can store things inside herself, including swords and other people's eyeballs. These can be accessed through her body orifices.
- Trouser Space: From which she pulls out a rather large machine gun.
- What Is This Thing You Call Love?: Hannah was a typical, uncaring demon until she was summoned by Luca. His naivety and selfless reason for selling his soul shook her immensely, to the point where she became Alois's servant just to be close to him for Luca's soul.
- Your Soul Is Mine: In the end, she ends up with Luca and Alois's souls. They're pleased.
Thompson, Timber, and Canterbury
Voiced by Kenichi Suzumura (JP) and Scott Freeman (ENG)
"None of your business."
"My cowlick spins to the left."
"My cowlick spins to the right."
A set of strange, quiet triplets who are servants at the Trancy Manor. They serve Hannah. They are demons, but not nearly as strong as the other demons in the series, even when fighting together.
- Buxom Is Better: In their opinions, anyway.
- He Who Must Not Be Heard: Until the Spider's Intention OVA, where Alois demands that they speak up, we only see them whispering among themselves.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Theme Naming: English writers, it seems.
Others
Elizabeth "Lizzy" Midford
Voiced by Yukari Tamura (JP) and Cherami Leigh (ENG)
- Arranged Marriage: With Ciel. He does care for her though.
- Genki Girl
- The Glomp: She never hesitates at a chance to glomp Ciel.
- Hair of Gold
- Kawaiiko
- Kissing Cousins: She and Ciel are cousins. Not that this was unusual for this time period.
- Morality Chain: Her entire reason for existence seems to be keeping Ciel from falling into the abyss.
- Princess Curls: In Mega Twintails.
- Spoiled Sweet: She's used to getting what she wants but, for the most part, isn't a bad person for it.
- Stepford Smiler: She keeps most of her fears and worries regarding Ciel to herself.
Grell Sutcliffe
Voiced by Jun Fukuyama (JP) and Daniel Fredrick (ENG)
"I'm the shinigami of mangosteen!"
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: All the guys he seems to like.
- Ambiguous Gender: There's still discussion among fans on whether or not he's a transsexual or just flamboyant gay. The Word of God is that he's gay.
- Badass Long Hair / Badass Longcoat
- Camp Gay: Though in a previous season it's heavily implied that he was romantically involved with Madam Red...
- Chainsaw Good: Yes, in Victorian Era England.
- Cheshire Cat Grin: This seems to be a popular trope for the characters of this series, but now Grell can especially fit it, seeing as how he's portraying the Cheshire Cat in the Alice In Wonderland-inspired OVA.
- Combat Sadomasochist
- Combat Stilettos: He wears women's boots.
- Depraved Bisexual: He actually did fall in love with Madam Red in the previous season, so he could be considered bisexual.
- He could be pansexual. It seems he just likes cruel people.
- Green Eyes: In two concentric rings. The inner ring is green and the outer ring is yellow, since this is the anime.
- Evil Is Stylish
- Evil Redhead
- Fangs Are Evil
- Friendly Enemy: When it comes to Sebastian. Although apparently Grell thinks it's more complicated than that.
- In Love with Your Carnage: This was likely the reason he fell in love with Madame Red and Sebastian in the first place.
- Interplay of Sex and Violence: With Sebastian, and William in the Shinigami OVA.
- Jerkass Dissonance: Most fans seem to completely ignore his ruthless and sadistic streak and tend to portray him as something completely different.
- Long Hair Is Feminine
- Love At First Punch: Sebastian. (And Will too, for this one. It seems he likes them both for the cold shoulders they give him. And the bruises.)
- Mad Love
- Meaningful Name/Partially Named After Somebody Famous: He shares a surname with the original Jack the Ripoff.
- Shinigami
- Slasher Smile
- Transsexualism: The fandom debate is heated and endless.
- Trans Equals Gay: The source of much confusion and disagreement.
- Weapon of Choice: His death scythe is a chainsaw.
Luca Macken
Voiced by Marina Inoue (JP) and Lindsay Seidel (ENG)
"I made a contract with a demon!"
An adorable little orphan who lives on the streets with his beloved older brother Jim.
- Ambiguous Innocence: Between dead parents and needing to steal to live, Luca apparently never realized that, well... summoning demons to kill people is wrong.
- Big Brother Worship: He adores his brother Jim.
- Cheerful Child: Despite his situation. It is likely that he is a Stepford Smiler for his brother's benefit.
- Deal with the Devil: He was the one who summoned Hannah.
- Death by Origin Story
- Go Out with a Smile: Hannah reminisces that he was the first person who had ever been genuinely HAPPY to see her.
- Meaningful Echo: "Yes, your highness."
