A Certain Magical Index/Characters/New Light
A Scandinavia-based "magic cabal", which in reality is only a club of novices with an interest in magic. Four of them have been introduced in Volume 17. Their specialty is Norse Mythology-based magic. They also have a major role in assisting Mikoto during the second Railgun SS: Shopping Mall Demonstration.
New Light
Tropes common to all four:
- Altum Videtur: N. L. presumably stands for "Novus Lumen", considering how the initialism for the Dawn-Colored Sunlight uses its Latin translation.
- Blade on a Stick: Probably their Weapon of Choice.
- Cosplay: They all have the same cheerleader outfit.
- Four-Girl Ensemble
- Les Yay: The whole group, particularly Bayloupe and Lessar, though Floris and Lancis aren't exactly innocent either. The group seems the be well aware of their apparently abnormal closeness too.
- Norse Mythology: Their magic is based on it.
- Only One Name: Their last names haven't been revealed.
- Stealth Expert: All of them are capable of entering blind spots in security cameras or hiding in plain sight by blending in with the crowd in populated areas.
- Teleporters and Transporters: Skíðblaðnir. It comes in a group of suitcases which allow transportation of objects through the other suitcases.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Carissa pulls this on them after they deliver Curtana Original. Luckily, they all survive.
Bayloupe
The leader of New Light, as well as the eldest member of their group. Her steel gloves draw power from Thor, which allows her to use the lightning-god's weapons.
- Badass: Fights Itsuwa and would've survived the Necessarius training ground if she weren't protecting the Skíðblaðnir.
- Blade on a Stick
- Shock and Awe: Her gloves emulate Thor's weapons. One of her most powerful spells seems to be a bombardment of lightning used as a long range area of effect attack.
- All Your Powers Combined: A variation - her gloves function as an amalgam of all of Thor's weapons, allowing her to use all of them at once.
- Somebody Else's Problem: In the Side Story, when the Magic Bomb was found she told Lessar this was Necessarius's job and it wouldn't benefit them in anyway to stop it.
- Spank the Cutie: She spanked Lessar for getting Mikoto too involved in the Side Story.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl: Although her description states that it's silver.
Lessar
A member of New Light. Her Steel Gloves contain retractable enchanted claws and is able to absorb fire-based attacks. She nearly gets offed by one of the Knights of England after explaining their plan to Touma and Oriana, but gets saved thanks to the latter two's actions. She later joins Touma in fighting Fiamma of the Right.
- Badass: In terms of fighting capability, she is the strongest member of New Light.
- Blade on a Stick
- Blow You Away: Seems to use a combination of the four directions and their elemental correspondence in order to control the air around her.
- Dominatrix: After Touma was confirmed to be alive and with Birdway she donned the suit and decided "Giving him treats didn’t work, so I have no choice but to start swinging the whip!!"
- Enemy Mine: In NT Volume 8, she and Leivinia both end up working together as part of the anti-GREMLIN alliance, despite Lessar being part of a pro-UK group and Leivinia being the leader of a cabal in conflict with the UK.
- Entendre Failure: Before trying to eat a large sandwich that Touma doubts she can even fit in her mouth, she says she prides herself on her ability to fit surprisingly large objects inside. And then adds that he can even think of that in an indecent way if he likes. He still doesn't get it.
- Fille Fatale: Works with Touma during World War III with the goal of trying to get him to work for the UK. She seems to be under the impression that if she can get him to sleep with her that equals Mission Accomplished. She's about fourteen.
- Fragile Speedster: She's fast with decent attack power, but hasn't really shown herself to be too durable. Her job during normal missions is basically to run around as a scout and gain accurate information.
- Heel Face Turn: She wasn't strictly evil to begin with, but she does change sides during British Halloween.
- Lady of War
- Les Yay: With Bayloupe.
- Little Miss Badass
- Lovable Sex Maniac
- Playboy Bunny: In the second Railgun SS.
- Playing with Fire
- Rape Is Love
- Rescue Romance: Probably one-sided.
- Single-Target Sexuality
- She Knows Too Much: Nearly gets offed by one of the Knights of England, but was saved by Touma and Oriana.
- Zettai Ryouiki
Lancis
A member of New Light. She mostly avoids combat, and thus has minor participation in the English Civil War. Her whereabouts are currently unknown.
- A-Cup Angst
- Barely-There Swimwear: She wore a V-Slingshot swimsuit in the second Railgun SS: Shopping Mall Demonstration.
- Blade on a Stick
- The Hyena: Her magic apparently makes her feels ticklish.
- Skirt Over Slacks
- Spider Sense: Is said to have the ability to sense danger.
- Status Debuff / Standard Status Effects: Uses status inducing spells to lower the enemies capablities.
Floris
A member of New Light. She is the driver of the group, despite being only 15 years old. She was rescued by Touma from being captured by the Knights of England, and is now in the custody of the Amakusa Catholics.
- Blade on a Stick
- Improbable Age
- She Knows Too Much: When captured by the Knights of England, she notes that the Knights probably plan to kill the members of New Light.
- Skirt Over Slacks
- Wings Do Nothing: Double Subverted. It allowed her and Touma to fly off a moving vehicle, but well, Touma is there.
- She apparently usually uses them as a tool to retrieve Lessar from her usual position on the front line.
