Macmillan Academy

Macmillan Academy is an academy in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. The school was founded in 1989 as the Macmillan City Technology College, one of the first of 15 City Technology Colleges established in England. Its initial sponsors were the Macmillan Trust, a charity run by Macmillan Publishers,[1][2] The school converted to academy status in 2006. An Ofsted inspection in 2007 rated the school as outstanding. As of 2020, its most recent full inspection was in 2013, when it was judged Good.[3]

History

The school opened in 1989 as Macmillan City Technology College along with the current buildings (now English and Mathematics). It later became Macmillan College. The current reception and dining hall were opened in the early 2000s and the school converted to academy status in 2006, along with a new building housing Science, Music and Physical Education.

Behaviour System

Sanctions

Warning- The student is notified by the teacher of their behaviour and are asked to change it immediately.

Negative Behaviour Point- The student is given a NBP by the teacher if the student ignores the warning. The point shows up on the student's record. If the student reaches 5 NBPs then they get a Head of Year detention. Teachers may also give NBPs directly without issuing a Warning.

Detentions

Departmental Detention- The student is given a detention based on what lesson they were disruptive in. For example, if the student was being disruptive in their Science lesson, they get a Science detention. Departmental detentions usually last for 30 minutes but if the student does not attend it is increased to 1 hour.

Head of Year Detention- The student is given a HOY detention if they reach 5 NBPs. They sit in the Head of Year's classroom for at least 15 minutes.

Departmental Isolation- This is similar to a Departmental Detention except the student is removed immediately from the lesson and sits on their own supervised in an empty classroom within the department.

Seclusion- The student is taken to a seclusion room in the academy and sits there supervised for at least 1 hour.

Exclusion- The student is excluded from the academy for a fixed term or permanently.

Reward System

Bronze Award- The student is given this if their work is deemed good by the teacher. It adds 1 Reward Point to the student's record.

Silver Award- The student is given this if their work is deemed excellent by the teacher. It adds 3 Reward Points to the student's record.

Gold Award- The student is given this for maintaining a period of excellence by the teacher. It adds 5 Reward Points to the student's record.
