Early life and education

Emhoff was born to Michael and Barbara Emhoff in Brooklyn, New York. He lived in New Jersey from 1969 to 1981, moving with his family to California when he was 17.[1][2][3] Emhoff graduated from the California State University, Northridge and USC Gould School of Law.[4]

Career

Emhoff is an entertainment litigator and began his career at Pillsbury Winthrop’s litigation group. He later moved to Belin Rawlings & Badal, a boutique firm, in the late 1990s. He opened his own firm with Ben Whitwell in 2000. The firm was acquired by Venable in 2006. Emhoff is now employed by DLA Piper, working at its Washington, D.C., and California offices.[5]

2020 presidential election

Emhoff's wife, Kamala Harris, was a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries before dropping out in December 2019. Emhoff appeared on the campaign trail numerous times with his wife.[6]

Harris was announced as Joe Biden's running mate for the 2020 United States presidential election on August 11, 2020, becoming the first African-American and first Asian-American vice presidential nominee of a major party in U.S. history.[7] She is the third woman to be the vice presidential nominee of a major party, after Geraldine Ferraro and Sarah Palin. Emhoff is the third man in US history to be the spouse of a vice presidential running mate, following John Zaccaro, and Todd Palin.[8] If Harris is elected, Emhoff would become the first second gentleman of the United States.[9]

Along with Jill Biden, Emhoff is set to campaign for the Biden-Harris presidential ticket.[10]

Personal life

Emhoff was married for 25 years to Kerstin Emhoff, née Mackin. They have two children.[11][3] He married Kamala Harris on August 22, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California, with Kamala's sister Maya Harris officiating.[12] As of August 2019, Emhoff and Harris had an estimated net worth of $5.8 million.[13]

Emhoff is of Jewish ancestry.[14]
