Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead is an upcoming American zombie film directed by Zack Snyder, who produced the film with Wesley Coller and Deborah Snyder, based on a screenplay Snyder wrote with Shay Hatten and Joby Harold. The film marks Snyder's return to filmmaking following an absence of three years after 2017's Justice League, and is his first non-superhero film since 2011.

The film includes a large ensemble cast, including Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raul Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Hiryouki Sanada, Tig Notaro and Matthias Schweighöfer. The film focuses on a group of military mercenaries which plot a heist on a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak. It has been called a "spiritual successor" to Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004).

Produced by Snyder's The Stone Quarry, the film will be distributed as a Netflix Original Film, exclusively for Netflix.

Production

The film was initially announced and planned as a sequel to the 2004 film Dawn of the Dead with Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Entertainment and was to be directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.[4] In January 2019, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the rights to the project from Warner Bros., with Zack Snyder set to direct from a script by himself and Joby Harold.[2] The film was set to commence production in mid-2019 with a budget of $90 million.[2]

Casting

Dave Bautista was cast in April 2019,[3] while Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, and Huma Qureshi joined the cast in May.[5]

In July 2019, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Chris D'Elia, Hiroyuki Sanada, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Samantha Jo and Rich Cetrone joined the cast of the film.[6] In August 2020, Tig Notaro was announced to replace D'Elia, who was cut from the film due to sexual misconduct allegations. Notaro will be inserted into the film through a combination of reshooting scenes opposite an acting partner and also using green screen to insert her into the scene.[7]

Filming

Principal photography began on July 15, 2019, in Los Angeles, California, and Albuquerque, New Mexico.[8][9] Filming also took place at the now closed Atlantic Club Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.[10]

Snyder served as his own cinematographer, and shot the film with custom-made Red Digital Cinema cameras.[11]
