Arden on the Severn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census.[1]

Geography

Arden on the Severn is located at 39°4′16″N 76°35′25″W (39.071009, 76.590347).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.2 km2), of which 1.4 square miles (3.7 km2) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.5 km2), or 12.75%, is water.[1]

History

According to the town center in Arden on the Severn, the area was used in the past for mining and cultivation. It developed into a community as the miners and cultivators remained close to and resided in the areas by the mines, especially areas closest to the beaches.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,971 people, 739 households, and 557 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,345.1 people per square mile (517.7/km2). There were 759 housing units at an average density of 518.0/sq mi (199.4/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.08% White, 1.93% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.73% of the population.

There were 739 households, out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 32.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 109.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,241, and the median income for a family was $85,926. Males had a median income of $49,034 versus $40,417 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $33,426. About 3.7% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.

As of the period 2007–2011, the estimated median home value in the CDP was $442,000.[4] Its properties are some of the most sought after in the state, as the community is secluded from main roads and businesses, but is close enough for easy commuting. One of the oldest homes in the vicinity is located on Dockser Drive and was built in the 1930s during the mining period.

Community

Most of the children in the community attend the Old Mill School Complex or the nearby private school, Indian Creek. There are a total of four community-sponsored beaches in the town.
