Vietnam Veedu

Vietnam Veedu (transl. Vietnam House) is a 1970 Tamil-language drama film, directed by P. Madhavan. The film features Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini in lead roles. The film, produced by Sivaji Productions, had musical score by K. V. Mahadevan. The movie was based on the highly acclaimed stage play of the same name by Vietnam Veedu Sundaram, who was also writer of the film. The film was a super hit at the box office and received cult status. The film was remade in Telugu as Vintha Samsaram, and in Kannada as Shanti Nivaasa.

Plot

Prestige Padmanabhan (Sivaji Ganeshan) is a short tempered and stricy, yet an extremely caring and sensitive father. He is the general manager of a reputed company. His wife Savithri (Padmini) sees him as an equivalent to lord Rama. Although the couple bicker and quarrel often, they still love each other even after 35 years of marriage. The couple has 3 children, Sridhar (srikanth), Murali (Nagesh) and a daughter. Trouble starts in Vietnam Veedu, their peaceful household, when Prestige Padmanabhan retires and the true colors of everyone in his household is revealed. He has a belief that in spite of his deteriorating health, him and savithri can make it through the retirement. But, their children and fate start to play a cruel game.

Production

Vietnam Veedu was based on the stage play of same name written by Sundaram, who earned the title of the film as the prefix to his name.[1][2] According to Venkatesh Chakravarthy, Regional Director and HOD-Direction at the LV Prasad Film & TV Academy, Chennai, the plot is based on Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman.[3]

Soundtrack

The music was composed by K. V. Mahadevan.[4][5] The songs "Palakattu" and "Un Kannil" were well received. The song "Palakkattu Pakkathile" was remixed in Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008).The song Un Kannil neer Vazhindhaal is in Kaapi raaga.[6]
