The song reached No. 2 on the US Easy Listening chart[2] and No. 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.[3] It also reached No. 5 on the Cash Box Top 100.[4] It reached No. 3 in Canada and No. 13 in Australia.[5]

Spanish cover version
- Nino Bravo released a Spanish cover of the song in 1972 called "La Niña Es Ya Mujer."[11]
