There are currently three recognized species in this genus:[3]
- Synbranchus lampreia Favorito, Zanata & Assumpção, 2005
- Synbranchus madeirae D. E. Rosen & Rumney, 1972
- Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, 1795 (Marbled swamp eel)
