Scott Turner (American football)

Scott Michael Turner (born August 7, 1982) is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator for the Washington Football Team of the National Football League (NFL). He previously was an assistant coach for the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers. Turner is the son of former NFL head coach Norv Turner.

Early years

Turner spent some of his childhood in Coppell, Texas while his father, Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator for a Dallas Cowboys team that won two Super Bowls. This sparked Turner's passion and interest for becoming a football coach. The Turner family later moved to Northern Virginia when his dad became the head coach for the Washington Redskins from 1994 to 2000. While in Virginia, Turner played quarterback at Oakton High School and was a standout player.[1][2]

Turner did not start a game at UNLV, and completed his college career with five complete passes in five games.

Coaching career

College

Scott Turner started his coaching career at the high school and college level from 2005 to 2010.

Carolina Panthers

In 2011, Turner started his NFL coaching career with the Carolina Panthers under first-year head coach Ron Rivera. Turner served as the offensive quality control coach for two seasons with the Panthers.[3]

Cleveland Browns

In 2013, Turner was hired by the Cleveland Browns as their wide receivers coach, coaching with his dad and offensive coordinator Norv Turner for the first time.[4]

Minnesota Vikings

In 2014, Scott Turner was hired by the Minnesota Vikings to be their quarterbacks coach under first-year head coach Mike Zimmer and his father and offensive coordinator Norv Turner.[5] Turner spent a lot of time working with Teddy Bridgewater, drafted 32nd overall in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.[6] In 2015, the Vikings won the NFC North division title but lost to the Seattle Seahawks in the wild card. Turner was fired in January 2017.

Michigan Wolverines

Turner was hired as an offensive analyst under Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh in February 2017.[7]

Carolina Panthers

In 2018, Turner returned to the Panthers as their quarterbacks coach.[8] In December 2019, Turner was named the team's interim offensive coordinator following the firing of head coach Ron Rivera.[9]

Washington Football Team

On January 8, 2020, Turner was hired by the Washington Football Team, then known as the Redskins, to be their offensive coordinator under head coach Ron Rivera.[10]
