Characterization

Like all of the other Gorillaz members, Russel was not based on a real person, but was instead conceptualised by Hewlett and Albarn as the personification of the hip hop aspect of Gorillaz music, to embody the spirit of collaboration with various rappers.[1]

Russel Hobbs provides the percussion for Gorillaz, and he can invoke the souls of dead rappers from the fictional hip hop canon. On the debut Gorillaz album, Russel called upon and embodied the soul of "Del the Ghost Rapper", a character voiced by and loosely based on American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien.[1] This came about when Russel was a teenager, part of the hip hop scene. His friends were rappers, which changed when a drive-by shooting happened, and he was the only survivor. After that event, all of his friends who were killed possessed his body, making his eyes completely white, and making him amazingly skilled at playing music.

gollark: It'll probably take a giant scandal ("Facebook is stealing your credit card information and using it to buy random people illegal drugs!") to make people consider moving, and you know what? They probably won't!
gollark: Though they're still reachable by SMS, I can't participate in their group chats or whatever, and I probably can't convince them to use Signal.
gollark: I already have a bit of trouble communicating with some friends because they're on WhatsApp.
gollark: I mean, so far, I'm trying to avoid cloud stuff by running most of my services locally, but I have to interact with cloudy stuff to actually communicate with people, and regardless of what I do there'll be all kinds of shadowy data mining going on.
gollark: I kind of hope the cloud thing will begin to recede as P2P technology improves and computers get fast enough that you can run a decent amount on a £50 RPi kit, but sadly... it probably won't.
