Rotherham Parkgate is part of the Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train pilot scheme, which is a first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The scheme involved extending the Sheffield Supertram from the Yellow Line in Meadowhall to Rotherham Central, mostly via low-use freight lines, and onto Parkgate. There are 75 free parking spaces for tram-train passengers.[2] The scheme ended up going over budget and costing £75 million.[3]

It was planned that Rotherham Parkgate will be the hub for longer distance inter regional services, while Central station will be the hub for local, Yorkshire based services.[4] It was thought that constructing the station would cost around £14 million (£53 million including the railway service to Leeds) and deliver economic benefits worth over £100 million.[5] A study has concluded that it is not worth expanding Rotherham Central railway station because it would cost £161 million to expand the station but only deliver benefits worth £76 million.[5]

Services

All services are provided by Sheffield Supertram's tram-train route. Travel times to Sheffield Cathedral are 27 minutes.[6] The current service pattern as of April 2020 is:

gollark: Or "palAIlogos" for short.
gollark: Plot twist: I used the palaiologos neural network™ to do mine.
gollark: You were clearly using that python script I made which makes 8 7 instead.
gollark: #8 was definitely me though. I got out my editor, thought to myself "hmm, how can I make something which is number 8", and did that.
gollark: No, #8 was definitely me.
