Production
Development
On February 8, 2018, the film (an action comedy from Dwayne Johnson and writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber) was developed as part of a bidding war consisting of major studios fighting for the rights. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, Netflix and Sony Pictures were all considered. The $125–150 million film would be produced by Beau Flynn through his Flynn Picture Company, with Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner along with Thurber's Bad Version Inc. with Wendy Jacobson executive producing.[4] On February 9, 2018, it was announced that Universal and Legendary won the bidding war in order to land the rights. Johnson was confirmed to be paid at least $20 million for the first time for this film.[5]
Casting
Gal Gadot was confirmed to join Johnson on June 11, 2018.[6] Ryan Reynolds was added on July 8, 2019.[2] Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos were added on February 10, 2020.[7]
Filming
Principal photography began on January 3, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia.[8][9] Production on the film was previously expected to start in April 2019 after Johnson wrapped production on Jumanji: The Next Level.[10] On July 8, 2019, filming was delayed to begin in early 2020.[2] A planned shoot in Italy was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic becoming more prominent in the country.[11] On March 14, it was announced production was halted due to the pandemic.[12]
Academy Award-winning visual effects artist Richard R. Hoover (Blade Runner 2049) will serve as the overall visual effects supervisor for the film.[13]
Music
On February 26, 2020, Steve Jablonsky was announced as the composer for Red Notice. Jablonsky previously collaborated with director Rawson Marshall Thurber scoring Skyscraper in 2018.[14]
Release
Universal originally scheduled the film for release on June 12, 2020.[15] The date got moved by five months to November 13, 2020.[16] The project was then moved to Netflix on July 8, 2019.[17]
