The monastery was built by Povilas and Jurgis Zavadskis and Juozapas Šyšla in 1655. The monaster was built from wood and burned down in 1770 and was rebuilt. In 1792 Pumpėnai got Magdeburg rights.
On 15 July 1941, Jews of the town were kept imprisoned in a ghetto.[2][3] On August 26, 1941, an execution squad murdered the Jews in a mass execution.[4][5]
