Palaye Royale

Palaye Royale is a Canadian-American rock band from Las Vegas, formed in 2008 by brothers Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig, and Emerson Barrett. They formed under the name Kropp Circle, later changing their name to Palaye Royale in the summer of 2011.[1] Their name was taken from the dance hall Palais Royale in Toronto, where their grandparents first met.[2] Their single "Get Higher" peaked at #27 on the Billboard Modern Rock Charts and they were the first unsigned band to win MTV's Musical March Madness awards, beating out artists such as Linkin Park.[3][4] They released their second album in 2018.[5] The brothers take their stage last names from their middle names, their birth last name is Kropp.[6]

History

Kropp Circle (2008-2011)

Palaye Royale started as a band called Kropp Circle, with Danzig being 16, Leith being 14 and Barrett being 12 at the time, Jim McGorman interviewed the band in 2010. During the summer of 2011 the band changed their name to Palaye Royale.

In 2009, Kropp Circle was a part of Radio Disney N.B.T. (Next Big Thing) [7]

Morning Light and The Ends Beginning (2012–2013)

After their name change, Palaye Royale released their first single, "Morning Light" on March 7, 2012. A year later, on June 1, 2013, they released their first EP, called The Ends Beginning. The EP contains six tracks, including "Die for Something Beautiful" and "Death Is A Party, Invite All Your Friends".

Sumerian, Boom Boom Room (Side A), and American Satan (2015–2017)

In December 2015, Sumerian Records announced that they signed with Palaye Royale, and with that came the release of their new album Boom Boom Room (Side A), released on June 24, 2016.

The album contains thirteen songs, and two bonus tracks, which were originally released as a two-tracked EP in 2013, Get Higher and White. Some of the band's songs from the album were "Mr. Doctor Man", "Don't Feel Quite Right", "Ma Cherie" (featuring Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens), and "Sick Boy Soldier".

In 2017, Leith's voice was used in the movie American Satan, as Johnny Faust's singing voice (portrayed by Andy Biersack).[8] Some of the band's music was featured in the movie, like "Ma Cherie" (instrumental version) and "Mr. Doctor Man". Leith also provided the vocals for the movie's fictional band, The Relentless, in songs such as "Let Him Burn", "Forgive me Mother", and "Me Against the Devil".

Boom Boom Room (Side B) (2018)

Leith, Danzig, and Barrett started the recording process for their sophomore album in January 2018. However, the entire album got scrapped and was reconstituted over the course of five months, completed a week before the band left for the final Warped Tour. Released on the 28th of September, the record completes the two-part album "Boom Boom Room". This album includes songs such as "Death Dance" and "You'll Be Fine". Their world tour, The Final Boom, supported the album's release. 2018, while a follow-up tour, The Funeral Tour, in the spring of 2019 marked the end of the era. During this tour, Danzig was arrested for throwing a cup of coffee at a car that tried to run over his and his fiancée's dog.[9] Since then, Palaye Royale has opened for Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson on the Twins of Evil Tour during the summer of 2019.[10]

The Bastards (2020)

On March 13, 2020, they announced their third album The Bastards would be released on May 29, 2020, through Sumerian Records.[11] They embarked on “The Bastards” world tour to mark the beginning of the new era. They traveled across the U.K. and Europe. On the tour, their Glasgow performance was canceled [12] with hours notice due to the band breaking venue rules leading promoters no option but to cancel the shows in the interest of crowd safety, leading to them performing a free acoustic performance. Later, their Birmingham show was also canceled but rescheduled to a sold-out show at KK’s Steel Mill, Wolverhampton They then were forced to cancel the rest of the tour due to the coronavirus outbreak and rushed home from Paris before flights shut down.[13] On May 29th, their third studio album The Bastards was released.

In June 2020 multiple sexual misconduct allegations against touring bassist Daniel Curcio were made after inappropriate communications with minors circulated via Twitter. On June 10, 2020, the band made a statement saying they do not condone his behaviour and that Curcio no longer works for Palaye Royale.[14][15]

Musical style

The band have frequently been described as; and identify themselves as; fashion-art rock,[2][16] as well as being described as rock and roll,[17] glam rock,[18] indie rock[19] and garage rock[20] citing influences such as The Animals, The Faces, Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, David Bowie, T. Rex, The Velvet Underground and classical music.[2] Classic Rock Magazine described their style as "crash[ing] from My Chemical Romance-influenced rock to New York Dolls-ish punk via dashes of Stones-y blues".[21] Their art style is also influenced by Tim Burton, as seen in their You'll Be Fine (Official Music Video).[22]

Other Projects

Bastards x Barrett Pop-Up shops, (2020)

This project was first announced on the 12th January 2020 on Palaye Royale's Social Media pages[32], in preparation of their 2020 UK/EU 'Bastards' World Tour. The aim of this was to sell the band's exclusive merchandise and Barrett's artwork to their UK/EU fans without the shipping costs. It was also an ideal project for fan interaction. The first date of the popup shop was the 20th - 22nd February 2020 in Kensington, London - with the 22nd being the most popular date as they also hosted a 'Palaye in the Park' nearby the shop earlier in the day. The band also played their song, 'Lonely', off their upcoming album 'The Bastards'.[33] Following the success of the London date, the band continued to host these popup shops in Amsterdam (February 27th)[34] and Paris (February 29th - March 1st).[35]

Palaye in the Park, (2018-present)

The fans of London created Palaye in the Park in May 2018. It is a free public meetup with other fans of the band in their area, where traditionally they would gather in parks and other public spaces. The first meetup was in the Kensington Gardens in London and the band, recognizing how much effort had been put into it, showed up too.[36] This can be seen on Palaye Royale's Royal Television series (now 'Bastards TV'[37]) season 1 episode 20.[38] The fans of the band still continue to organize and host these events all over the world.

The Bastards Graphic Novels, (2019-present)

Emerson Barrett (in tandem with a fan artist, XOBillie) is currently working on a graphic novel for the band, to go along with the concepts from the more recent music videos and storyline behind them. He stated that the first book was titled The Bastards, and leaked several photos including different views of the Manor seen in the music video of Little Bastards.
