Ofsted described the college in the following terms:

"In accordance with section 13 (3) of the Education Act 2005, HMCI is of the opinion that this school requires special measures because it is failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education and the persons responsible for leading, managing or governing the school are not demonstrating the capacity to secure the necessary improvement.

Leadership and management has also been described as "inadequate".

The Governors and Senior Management have a clear commitment to continual and sustained improvement in pupils’ attainment and in the richness of the curriculum the school provides."

In February 2008 the college moved into a new £17.3 million building, a £1.2 million sports hall, a Business & Enterprise Centre, together with numerous other specialist facilities.

The college is the first secondary school in Stoke-on-Trent (and perhaps England) to benefit from the national programme known as Building Schools for the Future.

Following an Ofsted inspection, the school was placed in "special measures". In the report, leadership and management were described as "inadequate" while the teaching was found to be satisfactory, with some outstanding lessons.

The college was inspected again on 2 and 3 March 2010 and subsequently came out of "special measures."

The college was inspected again in 2012 and went back into "special measures."

The college was again inspected in June 2013 and is out of "special measures". The college requires improvements according to Ofsted but is making good progress.

In September 2017 Ormiston Academies Trust became the college's sponsor.
