Nu Tucanae
ν Tucanae, Latinized as Nu Tucanae, is a solitary,[10] variable star in the southern constellation of Tucana. This red-hued object is visible to the naked eye as a faint star with an apparent visual magnitude that fluctuates around +4.80.[4] It is located approximately 290 light years from the Sun based on parallax,[1] but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −3 km/s.[6]

This object is an aging red giant with a stellar classification of M4 III,[3] currently on the asymptotic giant branch.[5] With the supply of hydrogen exhausted at its core, the star has cooled and expanded off the main sequence; at present it has 49 times the Sun's radius.[8] It is classified as a slow irregular variable and its brightness varies from magnitude +4.75 to +4.93.[2] Cyclical periods of 22.3, 24.4, 24.8, 25.1, 25.5, 33.8, 50.6, 80.1, 123.2, and 261.8 days have been reported for its variations.[11] On average, the star is radiating around 400[8] times the luminosity of the Sun from its photosphere at an effective temperature of 3,674 K.[8]
