In 2004, the school gained specialist Music College status, the first school in England to do so.[1][2] This resulted in a provision of musical opportunities for both students and the local community. The school continues to be a beacon of excellence for music and performing arts and has a well-established reputation in this area. It is also home to Spinney Hill Theatre, where both NSG students and other groups regularly perform. In the past, the theatre has been used for classical music productions when work is undertaken on the Derngate theatre.[3]
