North End, Port Elizabeth

North End is a suburb of Port Elizabeth, South Africa and lies north of the Port Elizabeth Central Business District (CBD). North End is at a junction of several metropolitan routes in Port Elizabeth.

History

North End was laid out in the 1820s. It was once a completely residential area but today, these old homes remain and are still inhabited, but share the suburb with many factories, offices and warehouses.[3][4]

Geography

North End is surrounded by the Port Elizabeth city centre in the south, Mount Croix and Millard Grange in the south-west, Sydenham and Kensington in the west, Deal Party in the north, Sidwell in the north-west and the Indian Ocean in the east. It is located on the eastern banks of the North End Lake.

North End is at the junction of the R102, M4, M5 and M10. North End's main road is the R102 also named as the Govan Mbeki Avenue. Another road in North End is the M7 to Walmer.

Government Facilities

North End is home to some government facilities and offices in Port Elizabeth such as the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Public Works and the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court.[5][6][7]

Sporting Facilities
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium built in 2010 is located on the banks of the North End Lake

North End is also home to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the banks of the North End Lake which was especially built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa. [8]

Shopping Facilities

Pier 14 Shopping Centre is located on Govan Mbeki Avenue and is the only shopping centre in North End.[9]

Industries

North End has many industrial companies operating in the area ranging from motor spares stores to hardware stores.

Cemetery

North End has large cemetery located in its northernmost area near the Indian Ocean.[10]

North End Lake

The North End Lake is an oasis in the middle of North End. This lake is also known as the Linden or Linton Reservoir, and offers stunning views to hundreds of the homes and business around North End and Port Elizabeth.

At its deepest point, the lake is about four metres, but averages a depth of three metres. It is popular amongst fishermen and watersports enthusiasts. People can often be seen fishing and boating, even skiing on the waters.

All around the lake, the grassy banks invite locals and visitors alike to enjoy a picnic in the heart of the city. The lake is situated right next to the massive new stadium, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium which was built especially for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ football matches. [11]
