Early Life and education

Nesthy Petecio was born to Teodoro and Prescilla Petecio. Her father Teodoro was a farmer while her mother Prescilla is a housewife.

Petecio first took up boxing at age 7. She was taught by her father at their home in Tuban. Her family moved in Davao City when her father got a job at Illuminada Farms. She took up the sport so that she can help her family.[1][4]

She attended Rizal Technological University for her higher education.[1]

Amateur career

In Davao City, She was recruited to be part of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines-Calinan boxing team which was set to participate in the 2007 Smart National Youth and Women's Open Boxing Championships in Cagayan de Oro. Petecio won the gold at the women's 50 kg. category and gained a slot in the national women's boxing team at age 15.[4]

She competed at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.[1]

At the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Petecio won gold in the featherweight division after defeating hometown bet Liudmila Vorontsova in the final.[5] She ended the year with another gold medal, this time at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. It was a sweet victory for Petecio after failing to bring home the top prize in the biennial meet in her three previous attempts.
