Ministerial and Other Salaries Act 1975

The Ministerial and Other Salaries Act 1975 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that governs the salaries of ministerial and certain other political offices in the UK.

In 2004, the Joint Committee of the House of Commons and House of Lords named this Act a 'fundamental part of the constitutional law' of the UK.[1]

Limits to the salaried holders of certain offices

The Act dictates that multiple salaries can be paid out to the holders of the six following offices at the same time, but only up to a certain number:

Salaries

The Act also sets out the salaries of government ministers, government whips, opposition leaders and whips and the speakers of the two houses of Parliament.

Some salaries set out in the Act are different depending on whether the office holder is an Member of Parliament or not. Office holders who are MPs also recieve a salary by virtue of that role. Such salaries are designated in the tables below under the headers of "MP" and "Not MP", respectively:
