Michael G. McGovern

Michael George McGovern (born July 1, 1964) is an American priest of the Catholic Church. He serves as bishop for the Diocese of Belleville.

Biography

McGovern is a native of the Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, and grew up in a large Catholic family in which Catholic education was emphasized.[1] He is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and Loyola University where he earned a bachelor's degree in sacred theology, studied law at DePaul University College of Law until entering the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois in 1990.[1] On May 21, 1994, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin ordained Father Michael McGovern to the priesthood in Holy Name Cathedral. He served as an Associate Pastor at Queen of the Universe Parish, St. Mary in Lake Forest, and St. Juliana in Chicago. He then served as pastor of the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, and St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in Old Mill Creek. He was Dean of Deanery 1-A, and was later named as the interim Vicar of the Archdiocese of Chicago in February 2020.[2]

Bishop of Belleville

Pope Francis appointed McGovern bishop for the Diocese of Belleville on April 3, 2020.[3][4][5] McGovern's consecration and installation took place on July 22, 2020 at the Cathedral of St. Peter.
