May Minamahal (film)

May Minamahal (English: Loving Someone) is a 1993 Filipino romantic drama film directed by Jose Javier Reyes. It was produced by Star Cinema and adapted into a TV series by ABS-CBN. Its rough translation in English is "Loving Someone".[1]

The film was co-produced by Regal Films and also re-released on Home Video in 1995 and 2002 internationally. In 2018, a digitally restored version in high definition was restored by ABS-CBN Film Restoration and L'Immagine Ritrovata.[2]

Synopsis

Carlitos was a well-established young man from a well-to-do family who, unfortunately, had to assume the responsibility if being a breadwinner after his father died. He was the only one left to take care of his sisters and mom. Monica, on the other hand, was the unica hija of an all-boy family who were basically living steadily by their means. The drama in their story will unfold as their families try to accept their relationship and the effects both characters will have on each other.[3]

Release

The film was released by Star Cinema on December 25, 1993 as part of the 1993 Metro Manila Film Festival.

May Minamahal was also premiered in Japan on September 15, 1996 as part of the 1996 Fukuoka International Film Festival with Japanese and English subtitles. The film's Japanese title is Crazy About You (Japanese: あなたに夢中で, Hepburn: Anatanimuchū de).[4][5]

Digital restoration

The film was restored by the ABS-CBN Film Restoration and L'Immagine Ritrovata in Italy and Hong Kong. The restoration of May Minamahal was made possible through the use of the 35mm print, held at ABS-CBN.The print was generally dirty, unstable, full of green and yellow scratches and big white spots from emulsion loss. The film was in some state of decay, causing the film to be warped at different degree in every reel. Digital restoration was able to significantly reduce these issues. The film has been scanned at 4K and digitally restored at 2K resolution at L'Immagine Ritrovata/ L'Immagine Ritrovata Asia in 2017.[2]

The film's restored version was premiered on February 21, 2018 at Power Plant Mall - Cinema 1. The premiere was attended by the film's writer-director Joey Javier Reyes; cast members Boots Anson Roa-Rodrigo, Aiko Melendez, Aga Muhlach, Agot Isidro, Nikka Valencia, Ogie Diaz, Bimbo Bautista, and Malou Crisologo; line producer JoAnn Cabalda Bañaga; production assistant Gay Ace Domingo; and the family of producer Simon Ongpin.[6][7]

In 2007, May Minamahal was remade into a TV series by ABS-CBN. The lead characters were Anne Curtis and Oyo Boy Sotto.
