Life

Mathur Madhabhai Savani is born on 12 January 1963, Khopala, Bhavnagar district (now Botad district), Gujarat, India. He completed his primary education in his village. He migrated to Surat in 1975 and started working in diamond industry in Gopipura area. Later he established diamond firm, Savani Brothers in 1980. During his business trips, he was impressed by water management in Israel and decided establish organisation aimed at water conservation.[1]

Social work

He established Saurashtra Jaldhara Trust to spread awareness regarding water conservation in 1997. He carried out awareness campaign and took walks across dry and water short Saurashtra region of Gujarat. He worked extensively to construct check dams across Saurashtra by community participation and government support.[1][2] He later cofounded "Beti Bachao Abhiyan" to spread awareness regarding female infanticide.[1]

Awards & Honors

Mathur Savani was recognized by Government of Gujarat by several awards; Chief Minister's Public Health Award for 1998-99, Chief Minister's Roupya Chandrak Purskar for 2001, Gujarat Gaurav Deen Sanman Purskar for 2004. Akhil Gujarat Patidar Parisad awarded him "Patidar Ratnashri" in 2005. Sandipani Vidhya Niketan, Probandar awarded him with "Rajshri Award" in 2005 while he received "Samaj Shresthi Award" from Saurastra Patel Kelvani Mandal in 2006.

He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2014 for his contribution in social works.[1][3][4]
