A first-generation college student, Miller-Meeks earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Christian University, Master of Science in education from University of Southern California, and Doctor of Medicine from University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.[1]

Career

Miller-Meeks operated a private ophthalmology practice in Ottumwa, Iowa until 2008. She also served as the first female president of the Iowa Medical Society. She was the first woman on the faculty in the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and worked as an representative from Iowa to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.[1]

Miller-Meeks ran as the Republican candidate against Dave Loebsack for Iowa's 2nd congressional district in 2008, 2010 and 2014, losing to him in all three races. When Mark Chelgren announced he was not running for re-election, she ran for Iowa Senate, District 41 in 2018, defeating her Democratic challenger Mary Stewart.[2] Her term in the Iowa Senate began January 14, 2019.

She has announced her candidacy for Iowa's 2nd congressional district in the 2020 election following Loebsack's decision not to seek re-election.[3] Miller-Meeks won the June 2, 2020 Republican primary election, defeating former Illinois Congressman Bobby Schilling. She will face former State Senator Rita Hart in the November general election.[4]

Since Loebsack announced his retirement, the 2nd congressional district has been labeled a swing district by journalists and election forecasters.[5][6]
