The previous undivided Dakshina Kannada (South canara) district was under jurisdiction of University of Mysore. In the early 1970s there was a growing demand for a local university. A post graduation centre of Mysore university was set up in the late 1970s at Mangaluru. To satisfy the demand for separate university Mangalore University was set up on 10 September 1980. Engineering degrees offered by prestigious constituent colleges including National Institute of Technology-Surathkal and Manipal Institute of Technology-Manipal were affiliated with and issued by Mangalore University until these colleges were granted deemed university status by the Government of India. The engineering and medicine disciplines were later transferred to Visvesvaraya Technological University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences of Karnataka respectively. In 1993, the Manipal associated colleges were transferred to Manipal University.
