Maldoror (band)

Maldoror is a music project consisting of Mike Patton and Masami Akita, also known as Merzbow. The name is derived from a nineteenth-century novel entitled Les Chants de Maldoror by the Comte de Lautréamont, the pseudonym of the writer Isidore Lucien Ducasse.

This article refers to a musical group. For Maldoror, the book, please refer to: Les Chants de Maldoror.

The project formed when Patton was on tour in Australia with his band Faith No More. At the time he had developed an interest in Japanese noise artist Merzbow. Patton made contact with Akita, and the two performed several concerts of improvised noise music around Australia. In 1997 Patton and Akita recorded material together in Tokyo, which was released as She on the Ipecac Recordings label in 1999.

Further use of the name "Maldoror" has been numerously involved with the "apocalyptic folk" band Current 93, the British experimental band Coil and the Italian avant-garde metal band Thee Maldoror Kollective.

Recently, in 2008, the Portuguese avant-garde rock band Mão Morta edited the live album Maldoror.

The life and work of Isidore Lucien Ducasse has been celebrated on a CD compilation called "Ducasse" released on Spain's Stereoskop Records.
