List of rolling stock preserved on the Severn Valley Railway

The rolling stock preserved on the Severn Valley Railway is used to operate trains on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR), a heritage railway in Shropshire and Worcestershire, England. There is a variety of preserved steam and diesel locomotives and diesel multiple units, passenger coaches and goods wagons. Most of these are typical of Great Western Railway (GWR) or London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) branch lines. Some are owned by the railway itself but most are owned by various individuals or voluntary groups. The line is also regularly visited by locomotives based elsewhere. Some come for a day on a railtour, others for a few days or weeks to take part in a special gala, but a few stay for many months and form part of the stock working scheduled trains.

Rolling stock summary

The railway can call on a large fleet to operate its services.[1] Only a core of vehicles actually belong to the railway company, the remainder being owned by associated groups, such as the Great Western (Severn Valley Railway) Association,[2][3] and individuals. The SVR is also the base of the DMU (diesel multiple unit) West Midland Group. Locomotives and stock from the railway do not now often operate excursions on the National Rail network, but they have in the past been seen from Mallaig to Plymouth.

Locomotive works

The main locomotive works are located at Bridgnorth.[4][5] It is not normally open to the public because of health and safety regulations but conducted tours and open days are arranged from time to time. Major features of the locomotive works include the boiler shop equipped with overhead crane, Noble and Lund wheel lathe, ex-LT lifting jacks and a Wheeldrop recovered from Leicestershire, installed in 2010. Works to enclose the southern end of Bridgnorth locomotive shed with roller shutter doors, improve natural illumination and waterproof the building more effectively were completed in early 2009.

Traction maintenance depot

Diesel locomotives are maintained at the TMD at Kidderminster. A three-road Diesel Depot building was opened in 2016 with facilities including a pit and an overhead crane.

Carriage works

Although carriage repair and restoration is carried out at a number of locations on the railway, the main carriage works is located in the former goods shed at Kidderminster. This building, lying adjacent to the main national railway line, is known as the North Star Carriage Works thus perpetuating a typical GWR name. As well as having a machine shop and fabrication equipment to carry out a full range of body and bogie repairs the carriage works boasts equipment recovered from former BR works to calibrate and adjust dynamo voltage regulators and to thoroughly overhaul and test vacuum brake equipment, a facility that is almost extinct elsewhere. In common with the locomotive works it is not normally open to the public due to health and safety legislation.

The Engine House

Severn Valley Engine House

The Engine House, built on land adjacent to Highley station provides covered accommodation for locomotives currently out of service, displays of other rolling stock, and an education/interpretation centre. Although it was due to be open mid/late 2007, the planned opening dates were affected by the flood damage at Highley station with rail access to the site finally being installed in March 2008. The first exhibits arrived by rail on 14 and 16 March 2008, allowing the museum to open in conjunction with the full line reopening. In late 2008 access was not possible by rail as passenger trains did not stop at Highley station whilst footings and parts of a new footbridge were built. Highley station reopened in 2009 and the new footbridge was completed during October 2009.

Although the Engine House was due to be formally opened by Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester on 28 April 2009 he was unable to attend due to illness; Algernon Heber-Percy, Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire deputised in the Prince's absence. It was formally opened by the Duke during a rescheduled visit on 21 October 2009.

The land on which the Engine House stands was originally the sidings for Highley Colliery and was later used as the 'Landsale Yard' for Alveley Colliery. It was acquired by the SVR in 2005.[6]

The frame plates were erected in November 2008. The bunker was completed and installed on the frame in March 2015. Cylinders arrived at Bridgnorth and first attached to the frame in April 2015. The driving wheels were fitted in April 2018. On 23 Jan 2019 the locomotive was shunted from its outside location into the yard at Bridgnorth MPD.[9] Work on the pony trucks is under way.   • BR Class 108 units 51941+59250+52064 and 50933+56208 (51935, which was formerly paired with 56208, was severely damaged by a fire in May 2008 which after forensic examination was revealed to be an arson attack. The vehicle was declared a write off and was quickly dispatched to Midland Railway – Butterley for component recovery. Cut up October 2008 and was replaced by 50933 from Peak Rail)

Arriving on the SVR in Aug 1971 she saw regular use and even managed to work the lines Santa services without assistance (the line at the time being extremely short, only running between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade). In 1977 she acquired her name "Shropshire" and was to remain on the line until 1981 when she was sent to the Bulmers Railway Centre in Hereford, traveling in convoy with 4930 Hagley Hall and LMS black 5 no 5000.

The move to Hereford eventually became permanent and she was sold in 1983, she is now undergoing an overhaul at the Ribble Steam Railway

No. 417 "Invicta" Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 ST Andrew Barclay & Sons Built in 1946. Invicta was delivered by road to the SVR in June 1972 but only saw very limited use on the line in 1972. The loco was later sold in 1975 and moved to the Chasewater Railway. The engine is now based at the Chatham Historic Dockyard and is undergoing restoration.
No. 1502 GWR 1500 Class 0-6-0 PT Swindon Works Built in 1949. Purchased from the National Coal Board in 1970 alongside 1501 & 1509. Classmate 1501 proved to be in the best condition of the three engines and 1502 alongside 1509 were used to provide spare parts for the restoration of classmate 1501 which was to become part of the Severn Valley Railway's fleet of steam engines on its return to service. Following the removal of usable parts from the engine 1502 and 1509 were later sent to Cashmore's, Great Bridge in October 1970 and were later cut up.

Classmate 1501 proved to be in the best condition of the three engines and 1509 alongside 1502 were used to provide spare parts for the restoration of classmate 1501 which was to become part of the Severn Valley Railway's fleet of steam engines on its return to service. No. 3612 GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0 PT Swindon Works Built in 1939. Purchased from Barry scrapyard as a source of spare parts for other panniers based on the SVR. Following the removal of parts that could be reused on fellow class members the frame was cut up after the wheels, boiler and other components were removed.
No. 3717 "City of Truro" GWR 3700 Class 4-4-0 Swindon Works Built in 1903. She arrived on loan from the NRM in 1984 for an overhaul which would see it returned to the mainline in 1985 intime for the 150th anniversary celebrations of the GWR. She took part in an April Fools' Day prank where the drivers side of the engine was painted in BR lined black before her overhaul commenced, her overhaul was completed near the end of 1985 and she was a popular engine on both the SVR and mainline before returning to the NRM in 1986.

She last visited the SVR in Sept 2010 for the railways 40th anniversary Autumn Steam Gala. She is now on static display inside the National Railway Museum in York.

No. 4141 GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2 T Swindon Works Built in 1946. Arrived on the SVR on 6 January 1973 in convoy with fellow SVR based engine's nos 5164, 4930 Hagley Hall and 7819 Hinton Manor. Left the SVR in 1988 before restoration commenced. Now based at the Epping Ongar Railway.

She last visited the SVR in 2007 for an appearance at the Spring Steam Gala.

With the Swanage Railway prior to the end of the 2017 season having no operational light pacific's (34072 257 Squadron still yet to enter service) alongside issues with a space being available at Bridgnorth for the engines next overhaul it was decided that after the 2017 running season was finished 34053 would move to her originally planned home in January 2018 following 5 years residency on the SVR. Her final passenger duties on the SVR was on Tue 2 Jan 2018.

No. 64.305 German Class 64 Krupp Built in 1934. She was purchased for use on the SVR in Sept 1974 arriving on the line in Jul 1975. It was however later discovered that incorrect information had been given regarding the locomotive and that modifications would be required to the locomotive as well as dealing with platform clearances before the engine could enter regular service. The engine therefore departed from the Severn Valley Railway in 1977 for the Nene Valley Railway as the line in question had been modified to allow the use of locomotives that had been built to the continental loading gauge.

The loco is currently stored on the NVR awaiting restoration.

Coaching stock

As an early entrant to the heritage railway movement the SVR was able to amass a collection of steam era carriages which, together with excellent covered accommodation and works facilities, are the envy of many latecomers.[15][16]

The SVR has a large number of GWR coaches mainly of Collett era with Churchward and Hawksworth examples also present. The SVR also boasts the movement's largest collection of Period 3 LMS coaches and a full rake of LNER teak vehicles of the Gresley/Thompson era. Normally the carriages are made up as a BR (Carmine and Cream) set, a BR (Maroon) set, a full LNER set, an LMS set and two GWR sets, one of which makes up the restaurant train. The non-restaurant GWR set is usually only used on the intensive timetable and at special events. One set works off Bridgnorth and is rotated weekly.

The collection of operational carriages is constantly growing. Recent entrants to the fleet include LMS RFO 7511, GWR Brake Third Open 650, LNER Kitchen Composite 7960, the Heritage Railway Association award-winning GNR corridor composite 2701, GWR Collett Nondescript Saloon 9103, and former LNER pigeon van 70759. The first four vehicles have all been restored from near derelict condition while 9103, largely complete when it first arrived, had been used as an office, and 70759, previously based at the South Devon Railway after being donated to them by David & Charles at Newton Abbot and also largely complete, has been converted into a Brake Third with 4 third class compartments, and renumbered as 24506. Others, awaiting restoration, include 1910-built Churchward third 2426 which has been in use as staff accommodation since arrival on the SVR, first at Bridgnorth and then, for the most recent several years, at Hampton Loade.

Goods stock

The railway can also muster convincing demonstration goods trains (generally utilising ex-GWR wagons) as well as works trains from its wagon fleet, the restoration base being at Bewdley goods shed, this being largely carried out by the restoration gang.[17]

Internal departmental stock

The railway owns a number of rolling stock items which are usually used in works trains. These cannot be classified as Coaching or Goods stock i.e. rail mounted cranes, tampers etc.
